Sinead's definitely, followed by The Family. I'm not so keen on the Prince and
Rosie version as I don't think that song works as a duet, plus it's far too
showey and vegasey for my taste.

agreed.

once sinead recorded it, she put all previous and future versions to shame imo

I agree totally.
This would have never been a hit if it wasn't for Sinead...
.. and Prince would never have done his versions.

Sinead O'Conner was the first version I heard, and I loved that song, I didn't realise at first that it was by Prince, now I still like her version but prefer P singing it, especially live at the O2!! biggrin

it's a beautiful song regardless, so i'd say any of them. i don't really like sinead's voice much but her version was a hit because it captured the same simplistic, quiet feel that made the original (the family's) so heartwrenching. p took it (back) and made it all showy and whatnot, which isn't what the song is really about. if he'd a cut it in the same way as the family version. that would be my favorite version.
For all time I am with you, you are with me.

Sinead's, easily. The most emotionally delivered.

Some people here need a reminder that while Prince was once a gifted songwriter, it is possible for others to do better interpretations of his own songs. Or are so far gone you'd also take his version of Manic Monday (for example) over The Bangles'?

this is such an amazing song & i remember the impact tht it had on most people when it reached no.1 in the uk with sinead o'connor.
she's got a great voice & sang it with passion. 4 me, this song firmly belongs 2 her.
i can only compare with prince as not heard the family's version...
i like 2 hear p singing this. i don't feel he does it better, but it takes a different angle cuz he's singing from a guy perspective.
2 hear him expressing vunerability & sadness is as shocking as hearing 'sister' 4 the first time lol
what i wanna do is say 'come here & let me kiss those nasty horrible tears away....& thts right, nothing compare 2 me..' razz

I agree.Sinead's version is haunting and effective....the arrangement blends perfectly with the lyrics.I never really cared for any other version of this song, including Prince's.

The Family's cut is the best studio version for me.

I like the ONA performance of the song. That's only because I like the solo performance better. I like The Hits version also, but the solo is better to me.

Did I say "you" or did I say "some people?" Learn context clues, ok? For example, now I am going to suggest that you need to learn to read.

A lot of people here seem to think that they're insulting Prince by not sheepishly declaring his interpretations better in every way, even when discussing songs he hasn't written. His Jailhouse Rock is better than Elvis'. His Whole Lotta Love is better than Zeppelin's. His Get Up is better than James Brown's. Those people need a wake up call.

for one, you're rude as hell. telling people they need to learn to read is uncalled for. and second, perhaps they just mean THEY like his versions better and who are you to say just because YOU don't. and i know how to read. talk to the hand

ps: are you kevin smith? maybe that's why you're so mad. lol

Um, don't blame me for the mistakes other people make.

And you'd be a fool to deny the number of sycophants on this site, who'd rub shit on their face if Prince sold it as New Power Moisturizer.

well if i need 2 learn how 2 read then u need better writting skills or get a webster's dictionary or thesaurus when writting the word "some". well guess what? i'm "some" that prefer other versions of his song than his and vice versa. assfinker said what?

And people say GD is crazy!

I'm out. People need to be cool and not try to think they are right.

Just because one person likes one version of the song and not another doesn't mean they are shit! It just means that they like the other fucking version.

People need to grow up.
