Most CD transfers were poor until the mid 90s.
I'm still waiting on Kate Bush's and The Beatles' catalogues to be given decent treatment. mad

Soz, I shoulda been more clear. I meant stuff that was originally mastered for vinyl and then transferred to CD.

I couldn't agree more

I was very suprised how better lovesexy sounded on vinyl. i thought there can't be much noticable differece; then i bought all the vinyls; eek They actually sound good and made me realise Prince is actually a very good producer. He just had some bad transfers/mastering.

I'm still looking to buy for you on lp. ANy thought on that? The cd is straight ass

The only albums of his I have on Vinyl are PR, Parade, SOTT and Lovesexy, they all sound better than the CD issues.
I've never found the 2LP set of 1999, only the butchered single LP set. mad

For You? Meh! Wouldn't bother me if I never heard that one again. A little too bland for me. It's pleasant, but about as memorable as a glass of water.

I have that biggrin lol lol

For you is worth having for i'm yours alone. That has Prince's best ever drumming and one of his best riffs. It is very sappy and lovy dovy though; we know Prince is nothing like that so it was obviously very contrived

lol He's easily forgiven, tho'. He was only 19. Bless.

Maybe a decent sounding CD version would change my opinion. I know I'd buy it if it's ever released.

1999

Parade

The Black album

Rainbow Children

3121

Alot has been pointed out about the quality of cd´s, which is a very good point, a top of the range sound system is normally required. However, I have found that ripping cd´s onto your pc, and using the pc as a sound system thru your own sound system very rewarding, especially if you dont have the luxury, space or neighbours to own a 100k system.
If it were not for insanity, I would be sane.

SOME of it; i agree.

There's alot of crappy drum programming though and the bass is way too high on some tracks

A 2 disc set would of been great

This may sound like a dumb question but how do you tell how well "mixed" an album is???

We are on this planet to learn something. I think you deserve an answer to your question:
Well, in the end it's all subjective. It's a matter of preference. Mixing involves how the different instruments relate to each other on a recording. It also includes the use of effects, equalizer, stereo effects, samples etc.
Personally I like the sound of the late '80s and early '90s productions, but like I said it's all subjective.

yes early 90's cds sounded wonderful

A poor mix for example may leave you wondering 'why can't i hear the voice' or bass for that matter.

E.G joy in repetition from GB has wonderful guitar playing but it's mixed in the background and is bearly audible at times. PR the track is poorly mixed and the guitar is nowhere near as loud as it should be. It should scream down you ear.

sometimes. It is the producer's progative and he either leaves it to the mixing engineer or tells the mixing engineer exactly what to do and is actively involved. Alot of the time the producer also approves the final master. e.g rick rubin witht he chili peppers.

Prince has engineered and mixed alot of his own songs himself.

Everything from 1978 to 1990 is good, especially 1999, Purple Rain, Around The World In A Day, Parade, Sign O' The Times, and Graffiti Bridge.

There are songs that I love on Lovesexy and Batman, but I wouldn't call those good albums, per se.

I, also, liked most of the Black Album.

1) Parade

2) The Gold Experience

3) Chaos and Disorder

In C&D's case, I love how bold, messy, and raw it sounds - While retaining some of the shimmer from TGE on songs like Dinner with Delores and Into The Light/I Will
I've seen the future, and boy it's rough...
