The Black lp is weak. Lovesexy is 100 times better lp. Annastesia is the bomb!!!

I'd say Lovesexy was the quickly drawn weak one..

they both kick ass, in my opinion. music

It's okay but not nearly as provocative as I thought it would be.

It certainly wasn't what I was expecting. With a title like "The Black Album", I was expecting a return of the "Old Prince" with the sound he had back when the majority of his fans were black.

The dirty sound you'd get from your tape being the 20th (if you were lucky) duplication was truly part of the magic.

Don't forget, this is the first album that really established the cult. Before that, Prince was the greatest, but with the outtakes thing, he became a legend, a semi-god.

Like, you know, "...And suddenly the vault was opened".

After the Black Album, The Dream Factory, Crystal Ball, Camille, Charade, Small Club begun to circulate... To listen to them in their time of "release" simply left you astounded. You would go : "So exactly how many has he kept secret ?". You already have the b-sides, The Time, Vanity and Apollonia, Sheila E, The Family, Jill Jones, all the Paisley Park artists and suddenly you realized the guy NEVER takes a holiday.

Per Nilsen, the Org, and everything else revolving around his work today, included us still debating in 2007, has originated from this cult status. But that's a theory, and if you don't want to know...

This sums up my fascination with the guy and his music perfectly. After getting that 1,000th generation tape of the Black Album in 88 I soon discovered the world of unreleased Prince music. The shows, the outtakes, and the "lost" albums (Dream Factory). It opened a whole new dimension to his brilliance for me. It also helped me not care that people made fun of me for liking the guys tunes...all this "unreleased" stuff just confirmed the general public didn't and never will get it.

I bought a bootleg lp of the Black Album at some record shop in Dinky Town back in about 89 or so. It's one of my favorite Prince albums of al time. I dig every song on it. Now I have it on CD and "Superfunkacalifragisexy" is on repeat alot. "2 Nigs United" is also a kick ass song. That bass is wicked! Great album to listen to while on acid. Same with Lovesexy. Both great trippin LPs.

:nods: Quite a lot of them are (though not quite as good as listening to Ozric Tentacles!! Now there's a great trippin' band! Seriously, check them out if you don't know them already (though one suspects you might already know them) wink

i loved it back in the day when it was a bootleg. i thought bob george was the creepiest, craziest thing ever. but you know, i think the mystery of the album and the "underground" rep it had were part of what made it so fun to listen to at the time.

Lawdy, lawdy, do my eyes deceive me? Is a mod discussing the glory of bootlegs? lol

when it was finally released officially, i bought it but only to have an "official" copy in my collection. i don't listen to it near as much as i listened to my ratty old bootleg cassette that i got in college.

Yea i know that feeling. I was so disappointed when it finally got an official release. I was expecting to finally hear it in a far superior great quality mix. But the sound quality of the official release was so tinny and shitty. Probably the worst Prince album mix I've ever heard (and that's saying something when it comes Prince albums).
So listened to it hundreds of times back in the day as a bootleg, but doubt I've listened to it near a dozen times as an 'official' release.
Pity, it was a pretty good album that deserved a proper quality production boost. sad
At least Lovesexy had a far superior mix
