Why doesn't Prince realease live cd/dvd?

I know it's an old question, but i just can't understand why.
I mean, Prince is probably the best live performer of the last 30 years, his live songs are far better than the studio versions, so his decisions on avoiding gig footage doesn't make any sense to me.
In God we trust.

Yup, I agree, it's the strangest thing of all, so few live Dvd's and so much talent in live performance - crazy! confused

A line from the "no pics" warning at the start of the London shows may explain it.

Something like "this show is for your memories only".

Maybe Prince feels DVDs etc. of concerts cheapen the experience for those that were there.
So look into the mirror, do u recognise some1? Is it who u always hoped u would become, when u were young?

It's disapointing. I reaaly feel that he protects his live footage because he feels the concerts are special and unique to the people that went to them.

And I think it proves he is not greedy when it comes money.

He could easily release lots of material and make a killing.

Not greedy?

why sue all the time; why be bothered about bootlegs?

Prince has earned over $200 million from us and gives nothing back.

I think you've got a good point there, and this is true, I think that's why he does so many Aftershows too, in small clubs and to small numbers. You do feel incredibly privileged to be at an event like that! And, I think that is Prince's way of giving back to his fans - as always through the music in a very special way !

I completely agree with you. Like alot of things in life, he may have good intensions but unfortunately some of them seem to have backfired.

cause the profection in him won't allow the world 2 know he yells at crew members or band members. and not 2 mention he would cheapen it with overdubs and edits..key xample is the ONA live ..it's all chopped up
man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

My take is at this point why try finishing up any projects whatsoever with the current downloading and problems with cd protection?? He just releases an album ever so often to keep people interested and and makes bank on the touring.

But releasing a huge amount of product would make little sense because thing are just dl'd to death. I remember P bitching that paintings and artwork are protected in museums but music is something different and people are just dling..or something like that at one of the ona sounchecks.

I personally would love to see the medium go the other way away from IPODs and have the sound quality become better (like SACD cds), and protection become better. Either way, I don't believe in stealing by dling official shit! But its impossible to protect sound right??

Because if people can keep watching him on TV and DVD's, they're not gonna pay money to go see him. I heard him say that himself in an interview, and he's RIGHT! nod

Aw shoot. Would you really do that? If you had a some tapes and he was at some stadium a few miles away? Would you?
I'd sell my soul to see that mf live. Watching a tape on a dang screen ain't nothing like being there.
And if that's the case he needs to bring his beautiful ass around town and exactualy have an Earth tour.

This isn't true. Many times he changes set list for different shows. I own live concert dvd's from the Dirty Mind tour to One Nite Alone tour (don't ask me where or how I got them, I cannot afford to go against Prince's lawyers. With all these shows at my reach, I still saw Prince live 19 times.

I have a shelf load of CDs and DVDs of Prince. What do you mean he gives nothing back? Have you gone to the store to see all the DVDs, movies, CDs that are on the shelves or have you ever gone to one of his dozens of tours?

Gives nothing back? Are you on crack?

Yes, this is particularly bizarre and it will seriously hinder his legacy if all that stuff is never released.

I dont really understand the question confuse

There is quite a large amount of live material available on video, albeit very little official stuff on cd or do you mean he should re release evrything that is on VHS to DVD.

having said that, I would certainly like if he would release more live material, like just about everything he has ever done, not sure my bank account would though wink
If it were not for insanity, I would be sane.

Such nastiness. neutral

So he's gotten rich doing his job. Doesn't mean that he owes his fans live concert dvds. Yeah that'd be cool, but we're not exactly entitled to them.

Prince gives a lot back to Fans of all the performers their is prince is without doubt the best what with all the intimate aftershows he does right after the main concert, where he could just piss off to his hotel.

just cause he doesnt release Concert DVD's at a drop of the hat. Oh he has not Sued anyone do you know the difference between a cease and desist and sueing someone, and before you start the sh*t about worshipping a hero i dont worship no one just stating an opinion.

On this very matter Prince said something once about if he released a live album it would become a definitive statement about how a song should sound live and he didn't want to do that as he feels he can always improve upon it each time he plays it.

I am paraphrasing but that was roughly what he meant.

Personally I would love every tour to have a DVD release (not worried about a CD as I prefer my live experience to include the visual AND the audio)
'I loved him then, I love him now and will love him eternally. He's with our son now.' Mayte 21st April 2016 = the saddest quote I have ever read! RIP Prince and thanks for everything.
