1999. i mean, most fans are so tired of that song they never wanna hear it again, but it got so massively overplayed for a reason.

I totally agree with u Anxiety. I avoid this song and don't care if I ever hear it again, but I did enjoy the music from the Superbowl lol

"Pure pop" can be seen as "commercially appealing, speaking to the masses", but in my vocabulary "Pure Pop" is first of all a catchy, well-composed song with a traditional pop-song scheme (verse, chorus, verse chorus, bridge, chorus, chorus), a style of music and composing originated by well... The Beatles.

In that sense i consider When you were mine and Raspberry Beret the best pure pop songs by Prince.

"When Doves Cry". Memorable lyrics - middle range, three-note chorus that anyone can sing along with - instrumentation that sounds clear as a bell even on the shittiest transistor radio. Prince's entire essence, condensed into three jaw-droppingly correct minutes

Kiss only loses out coz most people can't sing along without a) pulling a muscle in their vocal chords or b) singing it an octave lower.

If it doesn't have to be something that was released as a single then I would go for Last Heart or Extra Lovable (cleaned up version obviously!)

If we're going for pure pop, how about good love? It probably got zero radio play but it is pure pure pop all the way.

A Million Days is one of the worst pop songs P has ever written and is one of the songs I list in the unbearable songs thread on this very board

Little Red Corvette and 1999 have got to be two of the greatest POP songs ever written. POP songs cross all boundaries no matter whos listening to the best POP song heads still bob and bodies sway

I see some folks said When Doves Cry and while that song crossed over I don't think it was really a traditional POP record at all. It was a funk rock master peice that was jus huge and reached a large audience. Hmmm a pop song ....sorry
Dance... Let me see you dance

Other than LRC, AMD has "pure pop" written all over it!!!!! "Life Of The Party" was the track I kept skipping on Musicology!!! It was cool LIVE because he interpolated "Hot Pants" by James Brown
I stand by my statement: "A Million Days"- recently and "Little Red Corvette"-all time
cool cool cool cool cool

Raspberry Beret...no question.

I also think The One U Wanna C is one of his best pop songs.

not enough people have mentioned Raspberry beret. its a no brainer.

KISS is very funky and people love it, but its like a dance song, not what you would call "traditional" pop, ditto for WDC.

LRC and 1999 are second and third respectively.

Good Love.

But it's a really close call with Manic Monday. Alphabet St., maybe ? But it's too much of a mix of Pop and R'n'B. So is 1999.

Seems like too many orgers don't pay attention to the thread subject. Gett Off and When Doves Cry are not Pop, but pure R'n'B.

I think by Pure Pop the orger means WHITE pop... Don't get me wrong...

Others titles that may qualify in the Pop category, IMHO :

When U were mine
Private Joy
17 days
I would die 4 U
Raspberry Beret
Anotherloverholenyohead
Starfish & Coffee
I wish U heaven

...You get it my point, Prince manages to put a pop (catchy beatlesque or springsteenesque) song in every album he puts out.
The Colors R brighter, the Bond is much tighter
No Child's a failure
Until the Blue Sailboat sails him away from his dreams
Don't Ever Lose, Don't Ever Lose
Don't Ever Lose Your Dreams

Bonatec do you wear loafers? confuse

"Pure R n' B" doesn't have rock guitar, lyrics like "Animals strike curious poses", baroque keyboard solos, and no bass at all. The only thing that makes WDC unpop is the lack of melodic change from verse to chorus...

Like "Born in the USA" razz

but, if that constitutes r n' b, surely that disqualifies the 3 "pop" songs I highlighted on your list

pop is "popular". I read the thread subject

man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81
