The One Song "Planet Earth" could do without?

What do you think the one song "Planet Earth" could do without?

I'm back to listening to it after a hiatus of quite awhile.

I'm surprised. I still like it.

However whenever I get to "Chelsea Rodgers" I skip through it.

I even listen to "Planet Earth" which at first I found much too syrupy, but now just kind of dig it.

So, I say it'd be better without "Chelsea Rodgers;" I just don't understand it -- it's a song about a model? She's a role model? No? Just don't get into it.

So which song should be removed from the pleasurable listening experience that is "Planet Earth?"

You know what? I have considered taking Chelsea out of the line-up a lot of times in the beginning.
I enjoyed the vibe from Future Baby Mama 2 All the Midnights that I didnt want it to end... and it takes a while to readjust to Lion of Judah.

Somehow, though, I've warmed up to the song and it still fits just right.

I've found myself unable to skip through any of the songs.
I heart 'em all cool

Also the same reason why I don't want to mix the tracks up with those of 3121 and Musicology. They're all good and have difficult highs that make them special.

I skip that and Planet Earth. I cant get past Prince's vocal in the beginning..it sounds like he is singin in 2 vocals..falcetto and a natural all in the same verse..too much. But Lion To Judah takes care of that music

Planet Earth is like Strays of The World...moody..just cant get in2 that one.

It would definately be "Mr. Goodnight". It is shit hop sounding and I hate and despise anything that even slightly resembles shit hop. On the "3121" album it was "Incense and Candles" that was the shit hop sounding track that needed to go also. Enough of the shit hop already.

Gotta agree with "Chelsea Rodgers". Lame disco. Even if u DO like it, U gotta admit, that stylistically, it soesn't fit with the rest of the album.

And "All the Midnights in the World" is ABSOLUTELY one of my favorite Prince tracks EVER!! It harkens back to the good old days when Prince went out on limb and created something so singularly his it could only be described as PRINCE music. Not the mainly derivitive stuff he's been doing throughout the 90's and is just in recent years seeming to work himself out of.

I LOVE Planet Earth! The title track, SHOE, TOUWC, Lion, etc. are stellar!! I could take or leave Future Baby Mama and Mr.Goodnight, he does those kinda trax in his sleep, but the rock/pop of the rest of the album is GOLD to this old school listener! (Fan since '82)

Hell, there's no better music in the world than funk and disco. The entire album should have been like that. smile

Um..I hope we can all agree: There's GOOD disco and BAD disco. Chelsea Rodgers is BAAAD, imho. But either way it didn't fit on the album. And Prince is good at FUNK NOT disco! Also my opinion, I know, but really...Sleep Around? Chelsea Rodgers, there must b a few others...

Is Prince not known for geniusly blending funk, rock and pop??? That's the Prince I love. Especially when he throws us an umitigated pure POP song. He's a master at that. Leave disco to the club kids! It sounds old and dated. If I wanna hear disco I'll throw on some ol skool Donna Summer!

Well, I thought "I Wanna Be Your Lover" was pretty good.

Also my opinion, I know, but really...Sleep Around?

That wasn't disco. That was more like an attempt at house.

It sounds old and dated. If I wanna hear disco I'll throw on some ol skool Donna Summer!

And Prince's funk doesn't? I've heard funk coming from Prince lately that sounds like it could be an old James Brown recording from the 1970s that never got released. Anything funk or disco is going to sound "dated" because they aren't in style anymore. If he didn't make anything "dated" then he would be making shit hop because that's what's new and current. That's also the last thing I want to hear.

Just listened to it again. Not as terrible as I remember. It's decent.

So my vote now goes to Mr. Goodnight or All The Midnights in the World.

I'm with you on this one. For me Chelsea has never quite fit in with the flow of the album and it all fits much better if it is skipped.

Recently I burned a version of Planet Earth, replacing CR with PFUnk and it's now much better.

All The Midnights is one of the most cringe inducing messes of cheese I have ever heard. Listened to it all the way through once; never again.

Also, Chelsea Rodgers. I don't understand why everyone is so in love with this song. I find it very repetitive and uninteresting. Quite passable, in my opinion.

I'm not a massive fan of Mr Goodnight (or Incense and Candles from 3121 I must have the same taste as vainandy!), but the one I skip every time is Resolution. I'm sorry I just can't get past "the main problem with war is that nobody ever wins". What?! Makes me cringe and I have to hit the skip button! Plus the whole perky beatlesy guitar intro just totally jars with the subject matter - it's like when news readers report awful stories in this perky breakfast tv tone of voice!

I wasn't keen on CR to start with, but I saw it live and I saw the video and now I find it impossible not to sing along loudly and tunelessly, I love it!

Overall for me I prefer the sound of the 3121 album which I think is outstanding and play all the time, but I still think there are a lot of great tracks on planet earth, and i have a soft spot for it because I first heard it after the 02 shows so I kind of associate it with those very happy feelings!
You might not like the taste but I'm still gonna stick your face in this FUNK

This is a great thread for me, since I love the entire album.....except for one song.

There's just one track on the album that I have to skip. I can't listen to it. Everything else is just awesome.

What track could it be?

All The Midnights In The World.

It's complete cheese. Sorry Prince. I still love you. But this track sounds like it should have been in a Disney movie.

I struggle to dislike any of the songs enough to leave them off the album entirley. The songs do fit together nicely. Chelsea Rodgers sure as hell livens the album up.

I'm kinda that way myself.
I try not to leave songs out if I can help it.
In the end, Prince put his heart & soul into his music.
Why not give everything he's written the same chance to shine?

And believe me, I have worked with quite a few songs and they eventually grew on me. Sometimes, even if I leave something out and come back to it months later, I've listened to some similar sounds I like and I end up liking the song. I've thought of leaving songs out of 3121 to make it run smoother... everything's around the same calibar and I can't just play the super-awesome songs... and the one I didn't dig, Satisfied, I started liking after a while 2.

That's what I thought at first! The first time thru, I'm getting more and more impressed and surprised at the song choices & genres he picked out. PE was beyond amazing, never expected it to sound like that with the lyrics he had picked out (I was reminisicing over his naacp acceptence speech for the first minute, heh). I never expected anything like Somewhere here on Earth, so beautiful. I haven't heard anything like it.
Mr. Goodnight was probably the biggest surprise yet. I never knew he'd do anything like it. I almost felt like I had heard the music somewhere b4... "Space" came to mind after a couple of listens in. I don't think I've heard him do a track that he spoke, or rather rapped all the way thru... with his natural, speaking voice. Which I already go crazy 4 wink
All the Midnights is a short gem, but I like it all the same.

Then I came to a screeching halt with Chelsea Rodgers... probably left over from his Musicology "campaign" (bringing music back). I always said "I respect what he was trying to do, but I'm not feeling it myself"... eventually that one grew on me as well.

I am leaning toward Chelsea Rodgers. It does not fit.

Mr Goodnight also, the 3121 lyric makes me wonder if it was a 3121 CD throwaway.

If anything the CD needed one more song to segue from Midnights to Chelsea.
I think the transition is to drastic so it sounds wrong.

Probably Chelsea was a last minute add from the new batch of songs for the next album smile.
