Whatever Prince does for the next album, he better bring it HARD. The funk must be on point and he needs to sound like he has something to prove. I'm not a lyrics person but after hearing PE, he's gotta come more correct than the stuff he was writing on that CD. F.U.N.K. gave me hope that the hard hitting fire hasn't left him. I hope that Prince changes it up a bit for the next album, so that people won't think it's like the last 3. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

He's been dividing the fans since 1985. The next album will be just business as usual. Andy is a four letter word.

Also... I did say that his albums generally do divide, being as diverse as his music and his fans R.
I just think that the next release may divide in the way 'Rainbow Children' did. I'm not saying it will be like that album. Another thing: U just never know how fans will respond. I thought 'Planet Earth' would please the fans at large, and it didn't. I thought folks would've gone crazy at the 5:00 minute mark onwards on the song "Planet Earth", but they didn't. U just never know. The absolute best thing 4 Prince would be not 2 read or care what anyone wants... fans, public, critics, etc... and just do whatever moves him. This is the way he has been mostly 4 his entire body of work, and even when people think he's putting out what the people want 2 hear, he's still doing his own thing. Anyway... here's 2 the next. With the exception of Chaos&Disorder, any song Prince has put out and I didn't like instantly, I grew to like over time. I hated the Come cd when it first came out, but love it now. Prince has always been known for putting out music that he's into, regardless whether the masses dig it or not. Any person that enjoys his work, learns to appreciate all of his music, sooner or later. This is why I stay interested in him, he can make people of the most diverse backgrounds like his music, he is the only person in the music industry I can say this about.
So the question for me is, how soon will i like his next cd? Instantly, or will it grow on me later on? Oh, and hi....

If this thread has shown me anything, it was this: not having access to this website over the summer (due to loss of Internet and banning from website cuz of loss of Internet) was a blessing in disguise. And proves again that everything happens for a reason. I take a negative and turn into a positive. If I had been here with the arrival of the album, I would have become biased about certain songs and not like them on my own cuz of what somebody said. I found out on my own, just as I had for any other artist's new album in the past. Being free to make up my own mind was a huge gift. All I had heard from my few contacts from here is that some people like and some people hate (cuz they want "the old Prince" back)... I never imagined it'd be this bad or get this bad. It just occured to me, though. The album is BRAND NEW... so it might take a while to sink in. From what I hear, people thought TRC was terrible, and now they think its brilliant. But any of this being due to the more recent albums not being "good"... somehow doesn't feel right. And I love ur last statement cuz that's what I said earlier. So the question for me is, how soon will i like his next cd? Instantly, or will it grow on me later on? Oh, and hi.... Just read your post... wow, I think we have something in common. Prince lives for the music and dedicates himself to it. Therefore, I listen to something as much as I can to see how I truly feel about it. I've worked with certain albums for quite a long time (sometimes, I still work with them) before I know whether I like it or not and if so, how much. I think when you take the time, lay back and appreciate everything in front of you, you'll be rewarded for taking the effort by enjoying yourself. Whether I like an album right away has become a bit of a worry for me. Like I said, I've had to work a long time with some albums b4 I knew if I really liked them or not. 1999, The Gold Experience, Come, , Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic... are among the albums that I didn't like right away. I worked the hardest with the first three. 1999 is a classic, therefore I had to see if I could get myself to like it or find a way to like it at all. TGE, the most complex history there... but is one of my favorites. Come actually came off as so-so at first, but I knew it had potential. Then with Rave, it was completely alien 2 me at first... cuz maybe I was expecting something else but I spent a week with it to know for sure if I liked it... now I like it a lot. With the last three, Musicology was rough at first, but I eventually got to see the good in it. 3121 is a rollercoater, basically...loved it at first, then didnt like it... now i like it a lot. I got very lucky with Planet Earth because I loved it right away and I still do. In fact, I listened to it three times and stopped for a month cuz I was afraid the magic would rub off... know what I mean? In the end, I find something I like in everything Prince has done and I focus on the positives more than the negatives (and with the negatives, I just cast them aside). With that attitude, I enjoy myself a lot more. had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. It started raining, baby, the birds were gone

Hmmm... touché. Fine point. I'm on the complete opposite end of the spectrum because I'm working thru the old and waiting for the new. But being equally close to the old and new sounds he comes out with does have its advantages to. I certainly hope he'll keep releasing albums so I can enjoy that excitement. All the same, seeing what will happen at a certain time in his life when I've heard everything leading up to it... that's equally exciting. What I've uncovered the most over the last 10 or 15 years of hard work and endless mistakes is that a majority of the greatest art is polarizing.
When this world changes completely and everyone becomes open to everything and totally above offense, that formula will drastically change. But for now, I find that it works quite well to use that weakness in all of us to try to measure something positive; like great art. If great art could always be easily deciphered, we'd all just be watching it, listening to it, reading it and marveling in it. We'd just take a poll and be done with it. But unfortunately taste is as complex as the color purple. Some have no interest, others wrap themselves in it as if it were all that mattered. No, if you want to maximize your chances at being nominated for an Oscar or a Grammy, best that you create something that can be understood as greatness by a large group; including by some who haven't even bothered to fully watch/listen and are just reacting to other excitement. Everything ever created is loved and hated, but if you create too much hate, there's little chance of being understood in your time. But true greatness lives far beyond superficial popularity and recognition. If you want a real challenge, try to figure out all the reasons that you hate something. I think that you just might find out, I certainly have, that it's not ALWAYS necessarily because "it sucks!" But I'm greedy that way. I chose a long time ago to be shaped by greatness, rather than deprive myself in arrogance that it works the other way around. ==My editor has been let go.== [Edited 12/6/07 15:57pm]
