It has ABSOLUTELY got to be "Rebirth of the Flesh" That shit is so funky, I had to go wash my ass after listening to it. I can't believe nobody said that. That is some disgusting ass funk. It's so damn gross. I had played it like 300 times in a month on my laptop. That is the hardest funk he has EVER done or will EVER do.

I think this question is a no-brainer. The greatest funk pairing in history is the duet of Prince and George Clinton on "We Can Funk". The song could be master a little louder so that it bumps louder in the car, but...

Nothing tops "We Can Funk" as the funkiest number in funk history. Just the pairing of Prince and Clinton alone is cause for alarm!

George Clinton is the Godfather of all funk and Prince is, well, Prince!

It does not get better than that song. Period.

Temptation is the funkiest/grinding songs ever made. I've tried playing it for friends and they look at me like... omg 'what the hell is that?' And i love it. When that came out in '85 I must've have listened to it and the slow grind ending "Oh silly man...that's not how it works...you have to want her for the right reasons..." a thousand times since.

"Pop go mama when daddy get a little too much...you know what I'm talkin about...Purplelectricity whenever our-our bodies touch...oh oh baby love me, love me with your Midas touch!" That man oozes sensuality and passion, and there is nothing on the planet like Prince gettin funky, nothing.

true dat, Temptation is some raw funk. Let's not forget Kiss; the brother dropped the bass but still the combination of beats were more than sufficient to keep asses shaking!

Inspired by another thread about the 'hardest rock track by Prince' i decided to start this, because i like my funk as hard, direct and nasty as possible (in a musical sense, that is).

So, what are Princes hardest funk tracks?

Here are my choices:

1. Automatic (1999):
Not especially 'loud' in the beat department, but the cold sounding, brilliantly organised Linn-beat is right on spot IMO. Combined with those interlocking synths it works just splendid: just so strong and urgent. No smoothing down here, both musically and lyrically.

2. The Grind (The Black album):
Maybe the song is a bit too long for its own good, but when it comes to the 'groove' and the layered, clintonesque arrangement built around it, this is hard funk as it should be, even more direct and in your face then the late Parliament songs it reminds me off.

3. Hide the Bone (The Crystal Ball-set):
Almost stereotypical 'cliched' when it comes to the lyrics, and very catchy / poppy in its melodylines, but most important is that it just 'works' with the hard, dry beat. The straightforward overal funkieness is refreshing IMO.

Runner up:

4. I rock, therefore i am (Chaos and Disorder):
A song often 'talked down' because the gimmickly sounding raps and ragga-parts, but when it comes to the direct, ultracatchy melody, the guitarwork, Rosies background vocals and especially that hard beat (Prince is outclassing Sly and George there) this is a way underrated winner in the hard-funk vein.

also, "We Do This" live with George Clinton.

Well, you should have let this slide because you haven't a clue what REAL funk is and it shows by some of your choices. Now sliide yo ass on with that. thumbs up!

you are so right--its the syncopation of the rhythm guitar/synth's that really make Kiss so strip down funky. It's funk on the opposite side of the spectrum from Tempatation. mmmm
