To be honest, Prince has created some of the hardest, and most direct funktracks in history. The people who brag about discofied funk like Kool and the Gang and Rick James mistake some nostalgic 'idea' about hardcore funk with reality. Hardcore funk is not some 'cool-ism', its about funk hitting really hard musicwise, not smoothed or polished down like so many Earth, Wind and Fire-songs or songs by the Ohio Players. Its the line that goes from James Brown earliest funk tracks, to the more left-field songs of Sly Stone, to the most Pure-funk songs of Parliament, into the most uncompromising funk-jams of Prince. I don't like my funk 'washed down' with disco, plastic R&B and smooth soul, it just kills the directness and urgency of the music. In that sense i consider bands like The Urban Dance squad and Rage against the machine as artists who keep the appreciation for hard funk alive. Interesting to see Rage against the machine pop up here, it is something I have always thought about their music, but i was never really sure if my assumption was right, add to the fact that most Rage fans I know what have laughed me out of the room if i mentioned this to them. And to add to the list All Day, All Night - naturally Princes version  If it were not for insanity, I would be sane.

Well, most of RATM's music (especially on their brilliant debutalbum) is 'just' pure funk played with a rock-venom.
The beats and grooves are plain funk, but there is probably to much "guitar" in the music for old-school funkateers to realise that. I said it before, selfacclaimed "funkateers" are conservatives, who often dont recognize real funk when its there. Most of these so called "funk-lovers" are stuck in the seventies and early eighties, listening to discofied soft-funk like Earth, Wind and Fire or thinking that Cameo is funk-rock, when that band uses a hard-rock guitar once in a while. These conservatives are fooling themselves: songs like Freedom by RATM, Grand Black Citizen by Urban Dance Squad or Whats my favourite colour by Living Colour, are a continuation of the JB - Sly - Clinton - Prince-line, but those conservatives are to blind to see, just because the music might sound a bit too 'rockish' or 'alternative' on the surface for them. | |

I remember one time a friend of mine putting a video of them on, turning the volume down and basically playing the music on an acoustic guitar, i sat there gob smacked. although i had two of their albums already, this guy simply explained to me what was going on with these songs, especially the guitar work, which is to this day very un-appreciated coz RATM got labelled as a hardcore alternative act, to me they sounded like a harder version of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, with very complex guitar work. At the weekend I heard a Prince song called Slave 2 the System, which had me wondering had the NIN worked with Prince, as it turns out, in the mid 90´s Trent and Prince did some work together. This is probably one of the reasons that Princes mid 90´s work was so hard cutting, the TGE was definately Princes most hardcore funk, especially the out takes and live performances that are available, Dayz of wild, which for some bizarre reason never made it on to TGE, is in my opinion one of the hardest funk tracks Prince has ever put down, the crystal ball version is one of those tracks I often bring out at parties, when i feel the vibe is right, coz I know that it will have the place working up a sweat. If it were not for insanity, I would be sane.

This may sound like an odd choice, but i witnessed it at 3am Monday morning at a disco/club in germany in 1993, the Forever in my life live version off the infamous Small Club/Secret Gig aftershow, I remember being first stunned that a bootleg would be played at a club, but to see the dance floor full of people digging it, is one of the funkiest memories I have. There is also an incredible rehearsal version of Erotic City floating around the universe which has all the ingredients you describe hard, nasty, uncompromising funk  If it were not for insanity, I would be sane.
