I have just listened to all 3 back to back, and PE twice, as I have never really had the time to listen to it that often.

3121 just about wins it for me, as it is simply the most consistent of the 3.

However, seperating musicology and PE is alot harder. It has been pointed out that making either a double or single album of the 3 would have been better, without doubt a single album with the best of the 3 would have been a masterpiece.

2 single albums released seperately would have worked very nicely as well, but given that us P fans can never get enough, 1 masterpiece or 2 brilliant single albums over 5 yrs would have been too little. Not that I am trying to advocate quantity over quality, but there are veryfew artists if any that could release the volume of work that P does, and still maintain a standard. On top of that P´s hardcore fans are probably his most critical.

As for the comparisons with his 80´s output, that is natural and the reaction to F.U.N.K when it appeared, proves this point. basically one would have had to have lived in the 80´s when P was churning this stuff out, to have imagined what that was like, it was basically a mystical journey, which truly started with Dirty Mind and ended with Lovesexy, since then P has brought some incredible albums and music, but none of it has reached the heights of that 80´s era, and i stress the word era. As in album after album.

As a hardcore fan I have no complaints, I am always happy to hear what is next, as there is always going to be a gem or 3, all i can say is, I hope it continues

i give u props 4 having the courage 2 stomach listening 2 PE twice in a row..i can't do that without having a garbage can around so i can hurl
man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

Whilst I love the old school classics, I find these last 3 albums have been great to listen to as records in their own right. They've provided a tantalising glimpse into some of the newer jams from the infamous vault and also personally given me many highlights to savour...

Musicology...a personal highlight of mine being Prince & Wendy's acoustic rendition of Reflection but also loving that we got to hear A Million Days and If I Was The Man In Your Life dusted off from the back catalogue and given a rightful home
3121...especially felt the Lovesexy vibe on The Word "get up, come on let's do something", the "hey, hey, hey, wake up it's a new day" bridge on Beautiful, Loved & Blessed, not to mention the classic funk break on Love of "bounce, aww, shake that thing, c'mon!" And who didn't love the Michael B./Sonny T. Days Of Wild style rumbling on the title track?!
Planet Earth...absolutely LOVING(!) the gorgeous melody on Future Baby Mama (reminds me of the plaintive longing on the Rebels era demo of If I Love You Tonight) as well as the sheer brilliance of Lion Of Judah (a true classic in my eyes).

Surely I can't be the only one who is truly diggin' all 3 of these albums.
Anyone else feeling these joints?

hug

Pardon my ignorance, but when exactly were A Million Days (which sounds like Dolphin) and If I Was The Man In Ur Life written and recorded?

I think all three albums are good. None of them great.

This pretty much sums up how I feel about the 3 albums. I do like all 3, but I don't feel that any are great. I do think The Dance is awesome and I love a few songs on each album, but I wouldn't say that any of them are his best work.

I really enjoy moments of them but I'd be lying if I said they have anything like the effect on me that the '80 - '88 run of albums.

Musicology - Decent album - Reflection was nice, Call My Name - pretty.

3121 - Love the title track, The Word is good

Planet Earth - Like the guitar but it fades out to early on the guitar heavy songs

It's always easy to pick out little moments of magic (he's a fantastic musician), but I just don't 'feel' anything and it doesn't sound like he does either. It's all a bit 'look what I can do' There's no urgency, need to communicate, or pain or real anger (petulance doesn't count).

I much prefer TRC, One Nite Alone and The Truth to the 3 above cause he sounds like he means it.

Like Musicology
Love 3121
Like Planet Earth

I saw a build up of greatness and the Prince we want him to be in the first two albums. PE was a little bit of a let down but not much. I'm expecting something really good next.

I like all three... 3121 most. While not Sign O' The Times, Lovesexy, The Gold Experience or 1999 al of which are probably my favorites... I like them all better than Rainbow children, Sorry didn't like it that much... has its moments.. but.. ehhh....one of my least favors.

Musicology - ABSOLUTELY DESPISE THIS PILE OF SHIT. Although there are 3 or 4 cuts I love to pieces. Still, they don't redeem this crapfest lol
3121 - Love it.
Planet Earth Love it even more.

When PE was released,a lot of European press said it was
a comeback and a very enjoyable album.
While I have that feeling about 3121!
I've listened 2 PE a few times and I don't hate the album
but after a while it's just background music 2 me.
Nothing wrong,but also nothing exciting.
Chelsea Rodgers andFuture Baby mama however are
classic Prince songs!Good stuff!!
And I've said it be4,I just can't listen 2
his lite-rock since a couple of years.
Cinneman Girl,The marrying kind,Resolution,Lion of Judah...
the only tune I like is The 1 U wanna C.
I just liked his rock much more when he really rocks:
Fury,Guitar.

3121 is my fav album since TGE,like someone mentioned
every album has filler, but overall this is the Prince I LOVE!

When Musicology was released I was just happy he
released a normal,decent album!
No download-stuff,no Jehavo stuff!
I still love A million Days,Musicology,Life O'The Party(yes I like it!),
What do U whant me 2 do.

So,I'm happy he's still around and thanx 2 cd recordables
we can make our own great Prince album these days.
3121 plus the best tracks from Musicology and PE will do.

Interesting enough... Prince has done a ballad on the third track in A LOT of his albums.
Do me Baby- Controversy
The Beautfiul Ones- Purple Rain
Condition of the Heart- ATWIAD
Diamonds & Pearls
Shh (if u take out the NPG operators)- TGE
Until ur in my arms again- NewPower Soul
The Greatest Romance- Rave Un2
A Million Days- Musicology
Te Amo Corazon- 3121
Somewhere here on Earth- PE

Very true, your analysis is more thorough than mine (maybe that's because you brain is younger and more agile than mine!). It's just the flow of 3121 seems interrupted too early by a ballad for me. I'll have to have a think about the others to see if this has been a problem for me in the past!

Hey all,

I thought I was hardcore, but from some of these top 5 lists with New Power Soul and 3121 listed I think maybe I am in the wrong forum.

Now taste is a matter of perspective, but I can honestly say that both have a decent song or 2, but overall they are weak period. Even weaker compared to his earlier work.

I was so twisted with the songs on 3121, then the production on Fury which could have been a smoking guitar track, that I refuse to buy another new Prince album consisting of all new music until he gets someone in the studio to tell him was is weak.

I have said this for yrs here, that he is now following when up until 88 he was leading with production, song structure, ideas, beats, etc.

In the nicest way possible I can not understand how someone can listen to a track like Guitar or 3121 and tell me that it is good music.

I have hundreds of albums and there was time I would buy anything he put out,and look I still come here daily for the non prince forum, but I find his new stuff corny and cliche.
Music is the best...

That's what I've been asking myself the last decade...
is it the song or the sound that just isn't that great
sometimes??? We all agree that Fury would have been a much
better song if it had the power of Let's go crazy or Endorphinemachine.
Even in the early 90's he was praised 4 his abilities as a producer,
only 3121 comes close 2 how a P-album should sound like nowadays!

I do like 3121 and Guitar though..
