He keeps his pants on so that he won't end up having sex w/her b/c he already has a girl. It was such a good expirience he goes back and tries it with his girl.

Almost as weird as Starfish and Coffee he gets in the tub with her and keeps his clothes on because he's got a girlfriend. he even says so in the song. what's there not 2 understand about that? later, on his own, he recreates that experience, remembering that day when he sat with dorothy in the bubble bath with his clothes on and what a metaphysical change it brought to his state of mind thus allowing him to gather his thoughts again and let go of all the humbug in his head and in his life. and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

This (and Starfish) Were unfinished demo's which were put in the album untouched as they were so perfect.
The way its sung and produced, I wouldnt be surprised if Prince made up the lyrics as he was creating the song.. He probably put a lot more effort into that exquisite bit of drum programming, the best you will ever hear and that GOD DAMN FUNKY bassline.. .Oh I alwayes wished there was an extended version of this so that bass line would just roll on forwever... but there wasnt

And then the next lines say: "The phone rang, and she said Whoevers calling cant be as cute as u Right then I knew I was through (dorothy parker was cool) My pants where wet, they came off But she didnt see the movie Cuz she hadnt read the book first Instead she pretended she was blind An affliction brought on by a witchs curse" I've always wondered about the exact meaning, but his pants definately come off! Maybe she just didn't look at him naked?

Thanks for the interesting comments! Although I'm a little confused now... your earlier post seemed to make sense but in the next paragraph he takes them off? So does that mean that after the moment of clarity, he decided he wanted to have sex with Dorothy (but she didn't)? (And what movie/book is that referring to?)

(And what movie/book is that referring to?) she didn't see the movie (didn't have sex with him) because she hadn't read the book first (hadn't got to know him as a person with all his stories and different sides yet, on a deeper level) so therefore she just pretended she didn't see what he was doing and acted like there was nothing going on but sharing a bubblebath and listening to Joni. i think him taking off his pants after a while kinda tells us that he was still in doubt as to how to handle the situation. but since she didn't respond and told him "no meaningless sex, you're involved and we don't know each other at all" it showed him another side of what encounters like his and dorothy's can be like. edit [Edited 11/22/07 15:27pm] and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

You're good at interpreting the lyrics! Are you a long-time fan? well i've been listening to this song for 18 years now and it's one of my fav prince tunes. i've always been amazed at the lyrics in this song since they're so very different from his early lyrics in which women are always the bad ones, the ones that did prince wrong and cheat or sleep around etc. and here, with dorothy parker it's the complete opposite. but not just that, the complete lyrics are a work of art imo. very cool song. and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

I guess 18 years is a lot of time for you to ponder the lyrics and the meaning since this is a favorite tune of yours. And with the way you described it, it is a work of art, poetically, since it has a deeper meaning than just what someone like me would see on the surface. Is this about Susannah by the way? Or better question, how does this translate into his real life at the time? I mean, what was going on at the time that pinpoints who it was about? Or is the girl he was seeing Susannah? Iddanno, got an inquiry mind today.

YOU SHOULD ALL KNOW WHO THE REAL DOROTHY PARKER WAS!
I know that Prince was just taking aspects of the real woman and injecting his own fantasy upon the legend, but for those who are too lazy to google, she was one of the most famous poets and writers of the early 20th century and was a memeber of the famed Round Table at The Algonquin Hotel in New York City. She was an alcoholic and her writing was some of the most bitingly dark, funny, witty writngs ever! Look up "Suicide" or PLEASE see Mrs. Parker & the Viscious Circle, one of my all time favorite films, which is her life story and played to perfection by Jennifer Jason Leigh!! Runa nd rent or buy it now!!! Purplehead
