Z Cult Production/Marcia Brady and the White Girl Element of the 1999 album

Back in 82, it wasn't like it is today. (obviously) Folks STILL trip to a degree out here in L.A. liberal Cali when they see a brother like myself out with a white girl. And this is 07. That shit will never change. It was even more so back in the early 80's. That's one reason P's strong inclusion of my girl Lisa and J.J.'s part on the 1999 album was so "different'. No black artists in 82, besides Rick and Teena, was doing what P was doing. Feauring "white girls" in such a black setting as Prince's material on that album. Granted, Jill is half black, but besides her vocals towards the end on the "Party" section of the song 1999, she sung more "white" than black. Which is what P wanted. P always tried to seperate himself from other black artsts of his time. Be it in his look, his clothes, his mannerisims and his music. Sure, P wasn't the only brother in the early 80's to incorporate rock into his sound. Zapp with Roger was doing it. Cameo and Zapp were doing it. But no other black band or artist was doing all of the rest of what P was doing. And that's largely why P did most of the things that he did. To "shock" and to do what he KNEW other brothers wouldn't be caught dead doing. P name checking Marcia Brady(what other Marcia do ya'll know?) in Let's Pretend is right in line with the theme on the 1999 album. The white girls in the brother's world. At the end of of the song 1999, Mommy, why does everybody have a bomb? Little white girls asking the question in a funk setting. The two white girls crying and moaning in Automatic. The white sounding girl moaning in Lady Cab Driver. perhaps the funkiest song on the entire album. Another white girl placed in a funk (black) setting. DMSR, white sounding girls are all over this track. A total black party setting with a white girl at the end asking for help and for someone to call the police! P himself, even instructs the white people how to clap on time in this song. On the chorus of Free, besides Vanity, P has the white girl church choir. And of course, at the end of Delirious, he has the famous Pampers baby.In 82, in the world of Lakeside, Midnight Star, Zapp and the Bar Kays, nobody was pushing the envelope like P was. Not even Rick. And this was another way P was setting the stage and for the world that he wrote about in the song Ice Cream Castles.

Good point, pill. The Stick and Controversy were made funkier cuz of Lisa's vocals. But also the vibe on the 1999 album is like when white girls hang out with nothing but bruthas.

Thanx. I've always noticed this. P was doing that Pimp thing on that album, definately. It's the sterotype of the black pimp's prized possesion, the white girl. This was P's world and he wanted to showcase this on this album. Oh, and please realize, this didn't go unnoticed with black females in 82. Something that kept progressing worse into 84 when Vanity was replaced with a non black female. Then again in UTCM when his love interest was white. And then in GB where again his female love interst was Ingrid. Another non black female. P had been sending this message since Gayle in 79.

In 82, I at first thought he said Martian and I know many on here will think the same. Or say they think the same, just to go the opposite of what I said. I'm hip to that. Whatever. But yeah, I used to think the same thing. And fuck, maybe he does say martian. It also sounds like he says Marcia, which would make waaaay more sense. I just tagged the Brady cuz I thought it was funny. Didn't expect anybody on here to get it though. That's asking waaaay to much.

Yeah, that's why I used to think P was saying Martian. Also it tied in with the album cover with his name in space. But seriously, to me, with close listening, it sounds like he says Marcia.

The reason I thought it said "Martian" is that it sounds like the girl doesn't seem to understand what the hell Prince is trying to say as if she's from another planet or something or perhaps she's "outta this world". Not literally of course... wink

LMFAO! Great mis-hear!

That's up there with SlamGlam, who thought Prince was singing "Trampoline" instead of "Tambourine".

Dude, considering "The Brady Bunch" had gone off the air 11 years before "1999" came out, I just don't think P was referring to Marcia Brady.

As I posted in other posts on this same thread, I was being silly by saying he was actually talking about Marcia Brady. Because he could be saying Marcia instead of martian, I just tagged Brady behind it. That isn't what the thread is about anyways. I gotta tell ya'll and I've said this before, P fans are some of the most uptight and no having a sense of fun mofos out there. I mean, u actually got into talking about when the show was last aired and shit. U couldn't relate to what the core of the thread was about so u just zoomed in and nit picked on some little ass shit about how much time had passed between Oct 82 and when the last show aired of The Brady Bunch?! Player, they aired that show so much in re-runs since it's been cancelled, it's not even funny. Or he could have always dug Marcia. If that indeed is who he's refering to. Damn. Again, me even mentioning Brady was me being funny. Not that ya'll would take that and run to the Supreme Court with it and shit. "Your honour, listen..(panting) there is some longhaired black dude who plays guitar who posted on my beloved Prince Org saying something that is somewhat disturbing to me. It's an image that I don't want to see when I close my eyes at night. Is it true that Prince was refering to my all American Marcia Brady in his 1982 song Let's Pretend W're Married"? Is it?!
