It´s an early 80s outtake, recorded either in 1983 or 84 and later given to Adre Cymone, who released it on one of his albums ( don´t know exactly whether it was Surviving in the 80s or that New Wave album) . You can still hear Lisa and Wendy singing background on his version.
Prince mentioned this song in one of his stage monologues during the Purple Rain tour. The videoclip was kinda alright, had a bit of an apocalyptic/Mad Max vibe to it. Personally, I think this is one of his real gems , right from that era when he wrote 17 Days, Electric Intercourse, Extra Lovable etc., I mean it has the trademarks of those songs, with its hypnotic, mesmerizing bassline, the "electric" imagery etc. The apocalyptic lyrics and the emphasis on universal love make this one , IMO, one of his best songs ever and it fits perfectly into the category of those cold, electronic Revolution funk pop tunes from that era. As much as I respect AC and his work and his version, this songs is a trademark early 80s song and should ahve been released by Prince himself. It´s one of those songs that shouldn´t be messed around with , which means it is great as it is and reworking it, like We Can Funk, would probably ruin it. The bootleg version that is circulating sounds deep and nice, even though it is far from being crystal clear. This brilliant song should be re-released in one form or another but, as I said above, without changing anything. An EP consisting of The Dance Electric, 17 Days, Electric Intercourse, All Day All Night, G-Spot and Extralovable and one of those long versions of Computer Blue would be a cool little album, IMO. " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

The Dance Electic.
Near 11 minute original recorded as part of the Around The World In Day sessions in late 84, early 85. The song was given to Prince's childgood friend Andre Cymone for release on his 85 album "AC". (in a 5 minute edit form). This version is in essence Prince's with the vocal replaced, as he liked to do in those days. Wendy and Lisa appear on both versions. Here it is.... Just you tube Dance electric, The video is on there. . [Edited 11/30/07 6:39am] .

Prince wrote it, recorded it, didn't use it.
Made a big deal at the time about him and Andre making up after having not spoken for awhile when Andre left the band, and Prince mentioned a phone call between him and Andre where they made up and he gave Andre the song. The 12" version is FIRE. http://www.facebook.com/p...111?ref=ts

another example of prince generosity. is prince related 2 andre? WOW. Okay. I won't get all "me" over that one. Prince lived in Andre's basement during his teenage years. Andre was Prince's bassist before Brownmark. http://www.facebook.com/p...111?ref=ts

Haven't really sat down to listen to Andre's version to like it. But I like Prince 's version. Some people think I'm kinda cute
But that don't compute when it comes 2 Y-O-U.

I just saw the video. I vaguely remember it from decades ago.
I got all nostalgic. I remember listenning to all my Prince songs as a teenager and I remember how safe I felt back then. The music was and is a good companion and got me thru alot of sad and depressed times.

'The Dance Electric' by Andre Cymone is a great song but, the previously unreleased version by Prince and The Revolution is even better. It was recorded during the on and off recording sessions for 'Around The World In A Day' during 1984. Andre Cymone's version officially appears on his 1985 album 'A.C.' and was the first single for that album. Just think how the original version (recorded by Prince and The Revolution) turned out. It's longer and funkier, it's crazy that Prince hasn't released this on 3121 as a Jam of The Week. Now that would be very interesting.

Prince sounds better on almost every songs he gave. Desire comes to mind. The released version of desire is absolutely great.. but the unreleased version is a masterpiece and ranks amongst his best songs. imo [Edited 12/2/07 18:10pm]
