This is all I could find for now. "1999" was released several times (not counting "The New Master" versions).
1st release was on October 30, 1982. It was on the US Pop charts for a total of 12 weeks, peaking at #44 in December 1982. It peaks on the R&B charts at #4. 2nd release was on June 4, 1983, after the huge pop success of "Little Red Corvette" (which reached #6 in May 1983). This time "1999" was on the US Pop charts for a total of 15 weeks, peaking at #12 in July 1983 for two weeks in a row. It peaks on the UK charts at #25. "1999/Little Red Corvette" is released in the UK and peaks at #2 in January 1985. The last release was on January 16, 1999. It only lasted for one week on the US Pop charts where it peaked at #40.

I seem to remember it going to #2 (again) in the UK, but I couldn't find any info to confirm this. [Edited 12/4/07 23:30pm]

And it hit #1 on the US Hot Dance Club Play chart, knocking another Prince song, Vanity 6's "Nasty Girl," outta the top spot!

[Edited 12/4/07 23:30pm] yep it did get to number 2...while The New Master was just a load of number 2. Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!
