Don't Touch That Horn! You hear me? (Huey's getting tired of brass in Prince's band)

Really. Fun that Prince rediscovered jazz and all, but dayum, it makes that jamming REALLY, well, SINGULAR.

So. The O2 concerts. What we got? We got;

star Horns. Loads of them. They get boring.

star Jams. Endless jams. So you sing a few Partyman lines and then, again, a brass-jam. What fun. If I hear the words 'turn around' I will give you a major spanking.

star Shelby. Powerhouse voice. True. But dayum, I came to a Prince show, right? Not the NPG Revue. Sing a few songs yerself, mr Nelson.

star Covers. Play That Funky Music White Boy? WTF? Don't come to Las Vegas; we bring Las Vegas to you! Call me spoiled, but what the fuck is wrong with a song like, let's say, Something In The Water? What is IN your water anyways?

star Maceo. Probably the least inventive of Prince's musicians. He comes on, blows a solo and everybody goes MACEOOOO! I go BORIIIIING. Stop it, Prince, you're not JB.

star Synth sample sets. Now you might think that was fun, teasing us. But it shows that yer just lazy. HINT at Irresistible Bitch, then play Play That Funky Music? Plain foolishness.

Rant over.

they both have their place. it just seems like, anymore, it's either all one or the other. in the last 15 years or so, i think he's relied a bit too much on horns. but maybe he's just lost his penchant for coming up with great synth parts, the way he's lost it for creating interesting manufactured beats. of course, there are decent examples of both, since then, but it's probably just easier to hide the fact that he's not the studio wiz he once was if he just puts real drums and horns in there, instead of trying to come up with some mindblowing synths or machine beats.

a decent producer would tell him horns werent needed.

Personally, I love the horns, jams and Maceo. I love to hear a great jam and I think it's great how he showcases his bandmembers!

I would prefer that his next cd be a rock/guitar album though.

Bring back Eric Leeds. Maceo is cool, a legend, too much of a star on his own to be merely part of Prince´s band, and his sound is too dominant, too individual.

Eric on the other hand is the very definition of horns in Prince´s music. Who needs a whole horn section , really , when you have Eric Leeds. He´s the only sax player I want to hear in his music, if he really HAS to use horns at all.
Too bad that people are now so oversaturated with horns that they probably wouldn´t even appreciate Mr.Leeds anymore. At least he tell it like it is and is not one of those yes-men in the purple camp.

I agree. I feel the same way about Maceo as I do Larry. I respect their talent. But I don't really feel like their styles mesh that well with Prince's music. Prince was partially responsible for building the next generation of funk from the ground up. Bringing in the guys from the previous generation doesn't really advance his sound at all. For Prince music, give me Eric and Rhonda or Sonny any day.

i'm not massively against horns (although I used to be)

but i definately agree they should be used sparsely. it easily becomes overkill.

Since the Purple Rain tour, has Prince ever NOT used horns/horn samples in his live shows?

I would love to see Prince do a show without horns. It would be great to see him use the synths like mofo.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that
