The positive responses don't suprise me. I used to hang around a lot of "heads" back in the day. Every one of them loved heavy metal but every one of them respected Prince's ability to play guitar. He may not have been playing the type of music they liked but knew talent when they heard it.
Making love and music are the only things worth fighting for.

"dude's a freak and a self absorbed asshole, but he's a fucking musical genius, and this album is pretty much the bible"

White people will never stop praising Purple Rain. It's sad, 'cause it's not his best and I'll say that until the day I die. The only reason that record cracks my top 5 is because of "When Doves Cry" and "Darling Nikki." '

I barely play "Purple Rain," the track. Not a bad song, but overrated.

Well as a young adult back in'84 I was in 2 all kinds of metal at that time. I caught alot of flack from my metal bros and hos 4 having and listening 2 Purple Rain ! Well they did turn around and admit 2 me (on the side) that "Prince Rocked"! I think it had alot 2 do with his amazing guitar licks !!! guitar headbang
peace PEACE.....It does not mean 2 be in a place where there is no noise, trouble,or hardwork. It means 2 be in the midst of those things and still be calm in your heart ! heart

May be true - just like the The Wall, in my opinion, is not the best Pink Floyd album. But to typical non-fans it's the one they know and love.

You may be guilty of the same with someone else's favorite artist / band.... I'm sure I am.

yeah but it's his "rock star" album, so it's not surprising that it appealed to white people

Not to mention that it's a great great album!
