Prince's influence on Thriller

Just found this quote which was kinda surprising

http://www.telegraph.co.u...tviewedbox

Brian Banks It was late in the evening one night when we were working, and Quincy came to us. We all knew how Thriller was going, they were trying to get Vincent Price, they were doing all this stuff, but he wanted this huge chord sequence - he said, 'There's this sound that I've got in my head, there's this underground, this new artist, that nobody's ever really heard of but he's great, he's hot, he's got this great song.' And he pulled out the album and it was Prince, '1999'. And you know the opening sound on that? Duh-da da, Dur-duh-duh? Well that was the sound - that big, bitey chord sound at the opening of '1999' - he wanted that, but bigger, for Thriller.

I'm guessing it never happened. cool The intro to Thriller is wolf howls and shit.

Edit- I take that back. The part you're talking about is after the wolf howls right? lol

That's very interesting, especially since I was listening to Thriller last night. But I'm curious, wasn't 1999 released like a couple of months before Thriller came out? I thought albums/CD's needed to be mixed and pressed a couple of months before they come out. Just wondering.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

I have read articles and interviews in the mid eighties that stated that Michael Jackson was really terrified about the popularity that Prince gained with Purple Rain.

Those articles also said that Michael was going for a harder, more stripped down sound on the "Bad" album under the influence of Princes "Minneapolis sound".

Personally i think Michael was more impressed then with Princes competition (in terms of album sales), then Prince was when it comes to Michaels output. I mean: the release of Around the world in a day shows Prince wasn't really 'busy' with competiting Michael, but more with following his own path.

How was Prince 'undergroud' at this time? If his videos were being played on MTV, how is this the case? And Was this before or after the Prince/JamesBrown/MJ show off thing?

And another orger has a good point. Weren't these albums release dates very close?

well, if we're talking 1982, Prince had not quite reached cross-over success -- the exception being one song, "I Wanna Be Your Lover." Into 1983 things started to change quickly. (it was before the P/JB/MJ fiasco)

artist being inspired by competition...what a bliss...

too bad prince (and mj) don't realize there is still competition today...sure, the pop world has given up on artistry but it's still out there...and if prince's mantra that its all about "real musicians playing real music" then he would realize this...but the fat hog sitting in his big white mansion hanging out with prepubescent girls doesn't really seem to care about "real music...played by real musicians" anymore...as long as he can use today's pop culture as an excuse not to make it...

damn, im depressing myself...i'm gonna go listen to "the world has made me the man of my dreams"...i need to hear real music by a real musician...on an album that isn't ten years old.

"Jilted Lover Syndrome"

I guess every conversation posted can end with a jab at Prince. It all falls on Prince all of a sudden.. Maybe, he brought-out more of the "ungly" that was always trapped inside of certain idividuals..

If he's low, take the high road. I think that the opposite is happening..

Didn't these 2 albums come out in the same year - '82? If so, wouldn't they have been working on them at the same time?

According to wikipedia 1999 the album was released on October 29 1982.

The single 1999 was released on 24 September 1982.

According to the liner notes of the Thriller special edition, the last day of mixing was November 8 1982 and it was released on November 30 1982.

I'm thinking Quincy pulled out the single rather than the album, unless of course he had an advance copy as someone else suggested. Either way it's plausible, and remember Brian Banks is the guy who actually played the keyboard part on the song Thriller, why would he make it up?

See response above for dates, and Prince didn't get added to MTV until Little Red Corvette crossed over in early 1983.

It goes "Dur dea dur de, dur dea dur de da"

but i dont have thriller here so I cant compare, but the "Duh-da da, Dur-duh-duh" which you speak of, was used by a german comedian show host called Stefan Raab, who always used Prince music in his band opening shows, plus he scored a massive european hit called "du da da" or something like that, actually finished in the top 5 eurovision songs in 2000
wink

and to add to that, MJ must have been changing his nappies alot when he heard 1999, he and wetsack QJ knew the show was over. listen to thriller now, it sounds like shit in comparison, although I guess they thought they had a good chance after the JB appearance by Prince. listen to both albums back to back, Thriller is spineless in comparison to 1999, it simply has no depth, and then Prince knocked out Purple Rain, MJ knew it was all over, by the time the MJ got around to BAD, Prince was appearing naked on his album covers, even Madonna could not keep up, with or without playboy wink
If it were not for insanity, I would be sane.

what a comment eek

I think the "fat hog" playing 21 nights in London and some great aftershows, leaves alot to be desired about that comment

and the prepubescent girls slur stinks, Prince is many things, but that comment is totally unjustified. But it is comments like that, which are the reason he wants these sites shut down. Even better coming from a MOD

If you want to see "real" musicians playing "real" instruments, go on youtube and find some bluegrass artists... take their names down and attend their concerts when they come to your town. cool

Some are very young kids, but they've been at it a while and they can jam.

if prince wants uncolorful comments that are only positive towards him then he needs to re-open his lil npgmc site so that he can moderate, filter and control what people say...till then, folks here have the right to say what they want...
