On my way to work this morning I began to cry a little. I don't know why, it may just be a few words he sang and the way he sang it that had an effect on me, I was puzzled by my reaction. But I'm alright now! (Just a bit emotional) If it can move one to tears, must be good! International Lover moved you to tears? That IS interesting. I always found that song amusing, but not exactly moving. But great music can bring strong reactions, and tears don't have to be sad My Legacy

International Lover is beyond cheesy with all of the :ahem: flight metaphors... but I dig him adding a touch of class with it being all on piano like something out of the old school. I dig it for other reasons as well I've been considering it for this mix of music I've been planning. It's got the falsetto and a lot of his piano ballads have them and are brilliant for that. It's still up for debate, though. Cuz I've got a lot of other songs I have stronger connection with or just enjoy a lot more. had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. It started raining, baby, the birds were gone

OP, come on, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, i know, but 1999 belongs in the top 10 best albums of Prince.
When you want to listen to 'worse albums' try Come, New Power Soul and Rave instead. Next to that: 1999 is probably Princes most influential album ever. Listen to: Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Those swedish producers of the Backstreet Boys and Britney Spears (sorry for that....), Outkast, The Neptunes, Beck, Björk, Daft Punk, Peaches, to name a few... Moonbeam said: I'd say it's not only his best album, but the best album I've ever heard. You're free to dislike it, but the truth is that 1999 is arguably his most influential and one of his most innovative albums. It was the last album Prince made when he was a virtual unknown to the mainstream, hungry for success, and it showed. 1999 is a one-man tour de force, and Prince is playing ALL of his high cards here. It's the most awe-inspiring display of one man's talent I have ever had the pleasure to hear, and yes, I have heard Stevie Wonder's albums.

Been listening to this in my car and I'm liking Automatic and Something In The Water! Oh, and Free! Oh, and still liking International Lover (no matter what anyone says )!
I was listening to this album while sitting in the after-the-disaster-traffic-jam but had to turn it down a few times (I was embarrassed by a few lines in the album though and didn't want people staring at me like that ) eeeps !

I agree, I think the period of less consistantly good albums began from Come onwards or basically after Prince left WB. I generally tend to highlight Prince's best years through that 80's period but actually I think reasonably good and consistant albums were made right up until 1992 with LoveSymbol then post LS there has been for whatever reason this less consistant period... Come, NewPowerSoul, Chaos and Disorder, Rave, . P.S: I want to clarify that Im not saying all albums and tracks post LS are less good as I think there is and has been great stuff my point is I think there was a period of more consistany of and interesting good albums and then this other period which is more erratic. The album 1999 was one of the main reasons why they called Prince genius.
1999 is Prince at his best! The younger kids on this site here probably don't realize how far ahead of its time 1999 truly was. love the one who is Love!

I know where the original poster is coming from, though. It took a while for me to get into 1999. It's not his most immediately accessible, and can sound dated. It used to be over for me after Little Red Corvette.
Fast forward to now: I consider it one of his all time best. The album is pure genius. Just spend some quality time with it, let it play through a few times. There are some absolutely genius musical workouts in there, thats without even mentioning the lyrics. The complexity really starts to sink in. Like a good amount of Prince's albums, it takes a good number of listens for the particular album to really sink in before you "get" it. Give it time

Took me a while to get into the 4 tracks i didnt like at first, but when I did I realized just how good it was. Like someone on here said, us younger kids (me being born in 89) don't know how big or ahead of his time Prince really was in the 80's, but there's no arguing this is one his greatest albums.
