1999 was like 100 years ahead of its time!

The music still sounds fresh (even though the production leaves a little to be desired)

It's maybe his best collection of songs. Nearly every one is a classic in its own way. And for those that want the daring Prince, Prince was never more daring. The songs stretched out forever, but they didn't get dull. The rock was at it's best, the funk was at its best, the pop was at it's best.

Prince's music got more interesting, but it might not have ever gotten better than on 1999.

In your opinion then, do you feel this is the best album of Prince's?

I like your take on this album, makes it sound interesting to someone who never heard it before. nod

I'd say it's not only his best album, but the best album I've ever heard. You're free to dislike it, but the truth is that 1999 is arguably his most influential and one of his most innovative albums. It was the last album Prince made when he was a virtual unknown to the mainstream, hungry for success, and it showed. 1999 is a one-man tour de force, and Prince is playing ALL of his high cards here. It's the most awe-inspiring display of one man's talent I have ever had the pleasure to hear, and yes, I have heard Stevie Wonder's albums.

Wow! Just wow! Great review, I think I need to listen to this album too!

1999 was the first Prince album i ever bought so it holds sentiment for me.As other people have said its as fresh now as it was then,a true masterpiece.
The only track that i find "weak" is the title track.Im not saying its rubbish, its just that i have to be in the right frame of mind to listen to it.

1999 is defo in my top 5.
Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!

I agree because 1999 was a catchy pop song definitely top 40. easy to absorb for the casual fan..... where as the other songs on the album were more different, unique sound that was funky and fresh, with flavors that a more serious fan could savor.

1999 was like the 5-course-dinner candy that the fat blueberry girl at in Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory ate.....
one album that is the full course musical experience.

dont know about you guys but i love all of princes album, but this one is not that good, i love 1999,little red corvette and delirious but thats about it! what do yous think?? is it just me? biggrin

For me there was something special in the spirit of all the Prince albums made in probably the first 10 years of his career Im not saying there wasnt or isnt great albums after that period I just mean there was some type of roll he was on in that era in my oppinion.

I definitly wouldnt put 1999 amongst Prince's worst albums, no way.

killer classic Prince tracks ... 1999, Little Red Corvette, Lady Cab Driver,
Lets Pretend We're Married, Delirious, Free, .

For Me Prince's lesser albums would be

New Power Soul, best track is Come on,

Im not big fan of Musicology ...the title track is the best and there's couple other good tracks on it the rest of it Im not diggin much.

Rave, except for about 3 tracks.

there are couple more mediocre ones I could add but I'll leave it at.

Aww... I really loved ur first statement there. And I admit you're right. There's a certain spirit (some call it higher-quality) to Prince's music in the 80's that he doesn't quite have anymore. Not that he ever lost spirit. It's energy. Energy is transferred, not created or destroyed... the shape that spirit takes is just different, I guess, these days... that's all I can really say in his defense. confused [sorry im a science major taking Physics currently]

But there is something special about the 80's that makes it hard to match. All kinds of great music came from the 80's. I was expecting 1999 to be chock for of AWESOME 80's music. But trust Prince to do what you don't expect of him. I was caught off guard at first because he wasn't doing what everyone else was doing. I felt like an idiot for thinking that 1999 was full of generic/stereotypical 80's music. Prince doesn't follow the trends. What it seems like he does is he takes what he hears and goes in a different direction.

Free, Lady Cab Driver, International Lover, Something in the Water (Does not Compute) are perfect examples of songs that threw me a bit because that's not what I heard in the 80's. There was nothing like it out at the time.

I'm stating the obvious here, of course, but Prince caught a lot of attention because he does his music differently than everyone else's. I was the idiot for thinking I'd get something when he gives me something different. Somtimes, though, it does take me a little while to understand his thinking and once I do, I'm good to go cool

Once I get Lovesexy, I'll have about all of his 80's albums. Then after listening to it and SOTT, I'll really experience what you were saying, how he was on such a hot streak in the 80's and few other things he's done since compare. By listening to all of them one after the other. Can't wait to take that ride.

I think it might be his best, but it's got a lot of competition!

Maybe Purple Rain has a better flow to it, and maybe Sign o the Times is more creative & varied, but 1999 really captured all those things that Prince will forever be assiciated with--funk, sex, drum machines, synths, coolness, catchy songs, one man band, unique sound, embarassing heavy breathing...lol

falloff

My high school boyfriend LOVED Prince... he would wear his hair like Prince (long jerri) and when he sang Prince songs... he would do that heavy breathing... even the looks that Prince would give the camera ... etc... except my boyfriend had plain brown eyes.. not those hypnotic hazel eyes that Prince has. It was funny even back then. lol

This is blatantly a wind-up! 1999 is the bomb! It is currently my favourite Prince album. Never mind the eighties CD leveling - tweak your bass up another 1/4 and add a little more treble = Funk explosion. If he remastered this album it would sound as fresh today as it did 25 years ago. Today, people are remembering the 25th anniversary of the release of Thriller. I love Thriller but give me 1999 anyday.

As for the worse album... I don't think so, It was intriguing as I listened to it in my car. Haven't formed an opinion yet but I did notice in 1999 about judgment day. I never noticed that before.

So far so good.

Although I can't stop listening to International Lover. On my way to work this morning I began to cry a little. I don't know why, it may just be a few words he sang and the way he sang it that had an effect on me, I was puzzled by my reaction. sad But I'm alright now! smile (Just a bit emotional)

If it can move one to tears, must be good!
