There's no way I could rate the quality of these albums objectively. For one, I'm not a musician and am not in a position to declare something "crap." Also, I may have an idea as to how good I think something is, but it surely will differ from the opinions of others.

Discussion of music is definitely more than simply rating it based on a favorite basis. But that isn't the point of this thread. It can be, though! As far as I'm concerned, every single Prince release contains at least some top-notch material.

The albums that I rated rather low (which would be below 5 for me, since I would consider 5 to be an average degree of like) are "For You," "The Black Album" and "New Power Soul."

"For You" is a fun, interesting debut, but I don't believe it even comes close to showcasing Prince's talents. Of course, he hadn't matured or developed into the astounding musician we know him to be. I feel that the craft of the songs is much more sporadic and inconsistent than those on "Prince" and any other album, for that matter.

"The Black Album" is a good album. I rated it 4.0 simply because of my taste. A lot of times when I listen to it, I can't get past its darkness, which is strange considering the fact that "1999" is tied for my favorite album. I do feel that "Dead on It" and "2 Nigs United 4 West Compton" weigh the album down. I've never been able to get into them, for some reason.

"New Power Soul" contains 5 songs that I like, and 6 songs that I don't. As a proportion, that is far less than any other album of Prince's. However, in comparison to most artists, that ratio would beat the vast majority. It's strange because with Prince, I've grown so accustomed to loving nearly every song and every moment that an album such as "New Power Soul" which offers 5 great songs falls by the wayside to his other albums.

i don't understand how you can rate an album with a 10.0! that's impossible! it's not just the music you rate. it's more than that. it's every song on it's own. its lyrics, melodies, vocals, used instruments. it's the order of all the songs, it's how these songs cohere as a whole, it's the artwork, it's the packaging, it's the period in which it's released and your feelings about that period. you can't tell me it all fits like a glove..
for instance, i see a couple of you rate 'lovesexy' as a 10.0 album. you can't tell me there's not one song on there that's just not right ('positivity' for me). you can't make me believe that you love every song on there as much as the next. okay, you might say that it's incredible as a whole. but then you have this horrific artwork. which is really horrible. that must cost a couple of points, decimals even. my point: if you take the time to carefully rate an album, do it right..
