Best bootleg album?

question

btw:

ABSOLUTELY NO SOLICITING FOR BOOTLEGS.You want to discuss them? That's fine - but NO OFFERS TO COPY, NO REQUESTS TO COPY, NO "WHERE CAN I GET", etc. NO POSTING OF LINKS TO THESE SITES EITHER. Please be aware that the moderators here strictly enforce this rule.

Prince

Small Club

08/18/88

Het Paard Van Troje, The Hague, Holland

Disc 1
Instrumental Jam
D.M.S.R.
Just My Imagination
People Without
Housequake
Down Home Blues

Disc 2
Cold Sweat
Forever in My Life
Still Will Stand All Time
I'll Take You There I
I'll Take You There II
Rave Unto the Joy Fantastic

It is no secret that this is arguably the most essential bootleg
recording in circulation for Prince fans. It is first and
foremost on my personal list of favorites. Even though there are
now a plethora of soundboard recordings available from nearly
every tour, this is a perfect recording of a coveted aftershow.

I think it's ok.

Courtesy of Looney, whoever the fuck that is.

Listened to Small Club the other day for the first time in awhile and it's as essential as any Prince recording there is.

"Small Club" - Best Bootleg Album? Thanks for the tip, Org. Don't usually like bootlegs (most sound like crap to me), but picked it up after reading this thread. Would have never known. That's why I love The Org - I get a Musical Education upon every visit.

Live you can't beat the first Avenue performance from August 1983.

Studio wise I've always really liked Crucial, it plays like a proper album. All the songs are from the 1985-1986 period and work well together and the running order is spot on.

Is there a full bootleg album of that particular concert? In one of the Prince bio's this evening was mentioned as his best live gig ever.

Lots of fans will say OR Small Club, as it was the first aftershow in sound board quality to make it out of the death grip of The Vault OR indeed that sequenced Dream Factory.

But, in retrospect, the bootlegged Black Album and Charade back in the days certainly were albums that were coveted, made Prince legendary and gave a good scope of how silly he was, shelving songs like Old Friends 4 Sale.

Charade was interesting as it was the first album that showed people the progress of how Prince distills recordings into something final.

Small club is a quality recording, but there are some rougher ones around that I enjoy just as much.

It's live bootlegs all the way for me.

As for the O2 shows. __ck me !!!!! Amazing !!

Now that I know Prince don't like it, I don't do it now.sad

It's funny how people have different tastes; the O2 shows just summed up for me everything I do not like in Prince's music these days; flat, uninterested and easy. You play that funky music, , Mr Nelson, while I just go and play The Knife records, thank you.

But dayum, them old boots. YUM!

Yeah, it's called The Avenue and it's probably the second most essential bootleg. The audio is sourced from a video which is also circulating. It's amazing to see the actual performance of Purple Rain that he mimes to on the film.

Here's some details

Benefit Show for Minnesota Dance Theatre

First Avenue, Minneapolis

3rd August 1983

Duration: 70.36

LET'S GO CRAZY
WHEN YOU WERE MINE
A CASE OF YOU
COMPUTER BLUE
DELIRIOUS
ELECTRIC INTERCOURSE
AUTOMATIC
I WOULD DIE 4 U
BABY I'M A STAR
LITTLE RED CORVETTE
PURPLE RAIN
D.M.S.R.

Truth is there are literally dozens of excellent bootlegs. My advice would be to pick an era or a tour and explore from there because knowledgable collectors would offer a different opinion on virtually every period. You've got a lot of enjoyment ahead of you because many of them are far more thrilling than any recent official release.

Purple Rush 5 : The Ultimate Temptation contains the August 3rd 1983 First Avenue concert in better / remastered quality ...
The DVD of this concert you wanna get is "The Makings Of Rain" (Fullasoul's): great quality!

Back in college I did pick up a bootleg titled "just another N-word singing" It was a SOTT Europe concert. One lp was only left speaker, but the second lp was both speakers and though its been years since I've dusted it off, wasn't that bad, though i really don't know much bout bootlegs.

But I've never heard this bootleg discussed.
