I know that Prince was just taking aspects of the real woman and injecting his own fantasy upon the legend, but for those who are too lazy to google, she was one of the most famous poets and writers of the early 20th century and was a memeber of the famed Round Table at The Algonquin Hotel in New York City. She was an alcoholic and her writing was some of the most bitingly dark, funny, witty writngs ever! Look up "Suicide" or PLEASE see Mrs. Parker & the Viscious Circle, one of my all time favorite films, which is her life story and played to perfection by Jennifer Jason Leigh!! i think him taking off his pants after a while kinda tells us that he was still in doubt as to how to handle the situation. but since she didn't respond and told him "no meaningless sex, you're involved and we don't know each other at all" it showed him another side of what encounters like his and dorothy's can be like. edit [Edited 11/22/07 15:27pm] that breaks it down really nice.. since you went there, it made me think he really didnt have a bubblebath now.. he was really referring to a 'bed' .. that he kept his clothes on while him n dorothy laid in bed ... just my opinion | |

According to one of the bios I read, Prince didn't know about the real Dorothy Parker either until Susannah told him. It was just a coincidence that he chose that name. | |

Clearly alot of people here DON'T know who she is, and that very well may have included Prince back when he wrote the song (which is in my top 3 of all time with HCUDCMA & When U Were Mine). That being said, anyone not familiar with her should seriously check out her work that I mentioned before. The way its sung and produced, I wouldnt be surprised if Prince made up the lyrics as he was creating the song.. He probably put a lot more effort into that exquisite bit of drum programming, the best you will ever hear and that GOD DAMN FUNKY bassline.. .Oh I alwayes wished there was an extended version of this so that bass line would just roll on forwever... but there wasnt  There is a 12" version fo this, but in the vault. my fav prince tunes. i've always been amazed at the lyrics in this song since they're so very different from his early lyrics in which women are always the bad ones, the ones that did prince wrong and cheat or sleep around etc. and here, with dorothy parker it's the complete opposite. Thanks it now makes sense 2 me 2. i love that song and always thought d.parker was cool, no idea why!!! The song is like a movie 2 me, it just needed the right storyboard. but not just that, the complete lyrics are a work of art imo. very cool song. In Starfish and coffee, Prince narrates a story of a weird girl who was his classmate. She ate weird stuff, wore her clothes wrong, and the song implied that she might have been teased for doing so. Despite all the teasing, this still didn't stop her from staying positive, so Prince decides he wants to be like her, so he decides to emulate her (liking starfish and coffee). . on a side note: there is an awesome live rendition of the song on the sign o the times rehearsal boot now's the time where they kind of splice it with the madhouse track 4. it rocks especially towards the end when the madhouse track takes over. the closest thing i've found to an "extended" version. see that prince, i don't need you or your stupid vault.
