THe Family version is Prince's version, just with St Paul's vocals. i thought the original poster was referring to singles release... but now that you mention it, i could see how some younger/newer fans wouldn't know about The Family. i love the original, personally... but i also loved every time Prince played it in tandem with Controversy. not-so-much during the (imo) sloppy-but-fun Parade tours, but definitely during some of the more recent, post-2000 shows. | |

/peace Manki I disagree. Prince has been extremely soulful over his career, but I SWEAR St. Paul sounds BETTER over the Family's music than Prince does. Prince and St. Paul are both approximating Morris Day, on the track, but St. Paul is more convincing. Get this, I, also, love the Family's version of "Nothing Compares to U" and I HATE Prince's version. Ha ha... Mind you, I heard St. Paul, at a reunion show for the Family, recently, and his voice doesn't sound, as good, as it previously did. However, that's another story entirely... 
On the other hand, I would definitely not want to hear St. Paul's version of...say..."Neon Telephone"! Prince kills that song. | |

Well,the major thing why I love Prince's demo over "Family" is the production.I miss the bassline that's in the demo. However I'm not crazy about Prince's "Nothing compares 2u" but Prince's versions are all liveversions & personally I don't like Prince's overly bombastic arrangments of the song. If Prince had done it for himself in the 80's with Clare Fisher's strings I think it might have sound different. /peace Manki | |

But because he knew that Morris was going to quit, that's the ONLY reason he formed The Family in the first place was to try to replace The Time. So he gave them those two songs.
