Do you manage to seperate the music from the man? I read the interview with Ben Margolin, the founder of the org. He said an interesting thing in the interview: "I think I long ago managed to separate the music from the man and his actions," he said. "If I didn't, I don't think I could still appreciate his music."
Full interview: http://www.twincities.com...ck_check=1 Personally, I can't seperate the music from the man. What about you?

I have to separate Prince, the performer and image, from Prince R. Nelson, the person because, uh mainly, I don't KNOW him.

No offence, but Prince is NOT music. He is a human being. One (that is sane, not a crazed fanatic)would have to separate him from the music. Why? Because YOU DON"T KNOW HIM PERSONALLY. So with that being said, THERE IS NOTHING TO SEPARATE.....unless you personally know him, which none of us here do. What I see is a man.

I was able to do that along time ago...Prince has always been a lil' too aloof and pretentious, in my opinion...I've thought his attitude in some interviews was subpar...I thought some of his meanderings about religion, time and music were a lil' over the top...
but it hasn't affected the music I enjoy....

I think the only times when I can seperate the music from the man... it's completely unintentional. That happens when I'm not feeling a particular album and just see it as music, good or bad is up for debate.
Then the other instance is when I watch the interviews and I see the man who actually wrote the music, not the person within the music. It's like this: When I listen to the albums, I see things from Prince's POV whenever possible. I think about what he was thinking at the time of writing the material, what he was feeling, why he wrote it... and at the same time, I feel the vibe and get the message he's trying to get across while doing that. So it makes it very difficult for me to seperate the two. And if so, it's easier to do that when people don't so much like the man as much as they love the music. Then again, Prince lives for the music because the music lives within him. He's so gifted that the two merge into one whenever he strokes his guitar or writes down/sings a new lyric. I think I knew early on that he was a misunderstood character and when I saw his closenss to the music itself (as seen in the Purple Rain film), I shut out all of the prejudices against him and grew to see him as a truly gifted, incredibly talented person whose first love is the music he writes. had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. It started raining, baby, the birds were gone

I can separate the man from the music.I actually have to do this with several of my favorite artists, otherwise I wouldn't be able to listen to their music and enjoy it.Prince is a musical genuis but (like many great artists),he has major personality flaws.

without a doubt i can seperate the music from the man man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

Yes, quite easily. “The man who never looks into a newspaper is better informed than he who reads them, inasmuch as he who knows nothing is nearer to truth than he whose mind is filled with falsehoods and errors.”

Of course. I would probably never get to watch a movie of listen to any music or read a book if I couldn't make the distinction.
Imagine how bad our art might be if we only listened/watched stuff by "good" people. We're all flawed as people, but art represents artists ideals that they strive for, even if they don't quite make it there in life. I believe I should eat salad every day, but I don't. It doesn't mean I was wrong about thinking I should. The art can still inspire, even if the artist continues to make mistakes. My Legacy

I don't sit around worrying over what Prince "the man" is doing, I'm too busy for that I guess, and unless I was actually in his life in some capacity where any of his personal actions could have any effect on my daily life there is no point.
Prince the artist on the other hand....I always have a wonderful time enjoying the fantasy that my mind creates while listening to and enjoying his shows and CDs. I wouldn't want to separate the music from the man because then he wouldn't be who he is. He would be someone else..... [Edited 11/21/07 11:49am] He gets it! That's why the ladies love him...
