Oh would please with the Gestapo stuff first of all you don't even believe that argument and if you did then you are being completely irrational.

There is a huge difference between having legally sanctioned posters, that you purchased legally hanging in your house. Than there is creating a youtube video which is used for the purpose of gaining internet fame. You know that and I know that regardless of how many crocodile tears you shed or otherwise.

Newsflash just because you own some Prince paraphanellia does not mean you own the rights to said paraphanellia. This isn't just a Prince thing. You can't create a "Star Wars" spoof with your Luke Skywalker doll with out George Lucas' consent.

So why should Prince be any different? Why is his art any less valuable and respected?

Actually, George Lucas doesn't mind a thing (without his permission) as long as it not for commercial gain. He actively promotes fan sites and networks.

He is very controlling, but only on people profiteering from his product. Prince could learn a thing or two from him.

George even employs a full time fan relations manager to ensure the fans are considered.

He does not but he hasn't always been that way and as much as I love Prince and as big as he is.....I think.....well...I am just going to say it.....I THINK STAR WARS MIGHT BE BIGGER!!

Honestly I think this is Prince's way of cutting the fat around his fan base. you know he has always been ambivilent about admiration. I mean look at how the org blew up in 2004 and now people are leaving (or at least saying they are) in mass numbers.

In my mind this is exactly what Prince wants. "Get the hell out fair weathers and let me concentrate on the real fams, fans, purpleheads" or whatever people call themselves.

man, you're doing a fancy dance around my argument that could get you first prize in a cake walk! lol

"oh please with the gestapo stuff"? you're kidding, right?

if someone told me that prince would sue a family for posting a video of their baby dancing with one of his songs in the background, i would have laughed and said "c'mon, even PRINCE isn't THAT petty." guess what?

oh, and uh, OH YEAH: this very web site was ordered to take down over 3,500 images, including pics of prince-themed license plates and tattoos. how is a prince-themed license plate prince's intellectual property? that doesn't even make sense! but guess what? prince can afford to bully us a lot easier than we can afford to defend ourselves. if you think THAT is fair then yeah, you and i have some FUNDAMENTAL differences.

as for the usage of paraphernalia, i'm not even talking about repurposing a license product for my own means AND YOU KNOW THAT. i'm talking about INCIDENTAL placement of said paraphernalia. say i took a picture of me and my best friend and there's a damn tamborrocca hanging on the wall in the background. based on WHAT IS ALREADY HAPPENING, prince can get his thong all in a knot and sic his legal pit bulls on me for tarnishing his legacy with my horribly disrespectful photograph.

hell, prince should buy stock in photoshop because if this catches on and every artist takes his stance, we're all gonna be a nation of photo altering, litigation-rattled fools! woot!

i've been respecting that man's art for most of my life and all the money i've shelled out proves it. i'll be damned if i have to worry about hiding it so prince won't sue me.

but you know, i get where you're coming from - freedum iz an illusion, all luv 2 prince and b wild and all that, lolz

Well but I think the argument would be are you selling the pic of you or are you using Prince's image to sell the pic of you?

See the internet has opened us all up to Princes and just about every celebrities world. For example I remember Prince talking about some work he had done with No Doubt and Miles and Lenny K. He said that by the time all the lawyers get through with it and the record labels etc. They ruin a cool vibe you did with your friends.

Well now Prince is making us all feel that same thing. By the way I disagree with going after this site and I disagree with the baby vid. In my opinion if his music was created to celebrate life then I think he should accept people celebrating it.

But then I see the video that I saw above and I say "Thanks for saving me that eyesore Prince!!"

but really, think of the precedent he could set: if it works for prince, why can't it work for any celebrity? and if it works for celebrities, why can't it work for corporations? why couldn't mcdonalds sue you over a picture of grandma with a big mac in her hand? why wouldn't it work for ANYONE with ENOUGH MONEY?

this is why i am very clear in my dissent regarding prince's latest tantrums, and this is why i say it's a bigger issue than just a bunch of bitter prince fans whining once again. for me, it's definitely free expression issue and there is absolutely no reason incidental images of prince should be considered detrimental to his image or to his career.

and if a license plate has a reference to prince, there is nothing he can do about that and a picture of that plate has nothing to do with his image or career, either.

i agree with the person who called prince's behavior pathological. i think it's paranoid and worrisome. to use a popular word on this site lately, i don't "hate" prince. to be really honest, i'm concerned about him.

Well, I can see Prince's point, but IMO he's taken it too far. He should be going after bootleggers instead of his fans. neutral

Then I don't see how you can say you agree with Prince... if this were just about bootlegging it would be totally different... we're talking about lawsuits over pictures and tattoos here...

And we can't just gloss over the fact that he did come after this site.

although I understand the legal reasons to pursue the bootlegs, I dont understand the importance of it...if anything, bootlegs have provided Prince with career longevity that most artists will never achieve...so many artists have embraced the idea of fans bootlegging...Bruce Springsteen encourages fans to send in bootleg concerts to his Sirius satellite radio channel...the best ones get played on the air...the Grateful Dead, Widespread Panic, Phish - all "jam bands" that have embraced bootlegs and have enjoyed long standing success becuase of it...

is Prince really concerned with the affect of the financial bottomline in regards to bootlegs...or is it truly an effort to control his product...to me, it comes across as a spoiled kid saying "MINE!!"...without a doubt, it's P's perogative to pursue this in the manner he chooses but speaking only for myself, if it weren't for boots, there wouldn't be as much Prince music in my life...and if it's truly about the music for him, it seems there would be atleast a shred of appreciation for that...other artists recognize that, I don't know why he can't...

How can you bastardize bad songs like Future Baby Mama, Mr. Goodnight, etc, any more than they already are? If he doesn't want his music bastardized, he shouldn't release any. He should get a real job at McDonalds and find out what real work is.

So what your saying is what Prince does is not real Work, Could of fooled me or are you just sour cause hes Making more money than you.

WOW! There seems to be so much anger and hate against Prince by many on this site alone due to his current actions.

Please tell me...has PRINCE sued your site yet? Has he personally made you take all these photos down for the reasons he is accused of by all the mods on all these sites? Is it for the reasons stated only?

Or is there more to this than just Prince is a "@)@#*@)*@" and he is personally taking my rights away to post, distribute, have people on my sites distribute without me knowing or not knowing bootlegs, copyrighted images, questionable copyrighted images, or keeping me from feeling I can do whatever I want cuz it's my God given (regardless if I believe in God or not), American right to?

You see, I am very, very confused. All I hear is hate against Prince. There is so much slander and accusation towards him. I am NOT saying that these documents from his leagal team and Web Sherriff are not real. I BELIEVE that your site as well as other have received them.

But I just want to know...is there something more to this???

I'm not against you, your site or other sites NOR am I against PRINCE.

Don't call me an unrealistic, Prince can't do any wrong Fam either.

But so far I support Prince. I love this site but I do not like all the hate, sometime flat out lies, slander and basic "crap" that is on here. It has become so bad that sometimes I notice the mods on here lash out their anger against people supporting Prince but at the same time argue that Prince has no right to do what he is accused of by "silencing and controlling" his so called fans.

This is all very stupid and sad.

But I can tell you this...I still jam his music without regret and I have full and total enjoyment when I do.

In fact, "PFUnk" is the tune I can't get enough of and I am sooooo freakin' glad he released it!!! Keep singing "The Song Of The Heart"!

The whole defective mentality behind the suing is very self-centered, totally oblivious to a functioning networking society, unrealistic and unenforceable. Art comes from other art. Not from a vacuum. Prince is a genuis but his rap parodies are just one example of using someone else's influence. "Every artist is a cannibal, every poet is a thief" -Bono.

Parody/satire of another artist's work is protected usually. The notion that other people are leeching off his fame? Okay, so like what 1% of society with nefarious aims playing his background music on a video for example? Bootlegging..okay that's understand. The other vast percentage recognizes his brilliance by using his images, that's called COMMUNICATION, basic human behavior since the dawn of time, especially relevant for someone who CHOSE to be a PUBLIC ARTIST. So he doesn't want to be a musical muse/influence/inspiration to anyone anymore?

Likewise, it's not only about the music. That's nonsense. It's always been about his image and teasing the public with sexual innuendo especially from his girl bands. So now he feels taken advantage of and unable to manipulate the masses apparently.

This whole endeavor he's undertaking on technicalities under the law
is a fight that will only hurt him and it's THE BIGGEST MISTAKE/LACK OF JUDGEMENT of his career and it's becoming increasing clear his behavior has become SOCIOPATHOLOGICAL. Sad to say, but something's clearly out of sync. I hope he drops this nonsense.

Art from other Art = Pop Art.

BTW: Didn't one fo these supposed "Fam-sites" attempt to sell a calender of photos a couple of years ago (without permission or pay to Prince)?

Didn't some of these famsites have forums for boots, and "in the earlier days" links to "boot-trading sites". It was wrong years ago.

It's selective policing...

He's not. Youtube..Ebay.."Fam-sites". All imagery. All gone.

You know I think I understand why Prince is suing for content and as much as I love the org I am on the side of Prince. Not to the extent that he is taking it but for the idea why!! Check this video out!

http://www.youtube.com/wa...wBXV1xLcY0

Now do you really want to see that bullshit with Prince music behind it? Like he says in the new song. He doesn't want you, me or anybody but him using his music or likeness to get their 15 minutes of fame! This is why he isn't letting us post the pics of him anyomre, as well as showing his videos and what not.

See one of the reasons we all like Prince is because he is so different than every other star. He doesn't completly whore himself out, you're not gonna see a Prince reality show. With Prince its either you enjoy and respect the music, his music, the way he writes and performs it or you can be out!!

So we won't get alot of bootlegged material on youtube or even this very site. We won't get to hear obscure cuts in a public form. BUT what you will get is great music, both old and new. You will get incredible live shows that have no equal on this Planet. And most importantly you will get an artist that gives a fuck about what the hell he has created. He wants you to get it but only if you can take the journey and if you can't, see ya!!

So that's my thoughts on this and yes I hear ya Prince and I agree with your point.

so you think it's okay that if i ever have a party at my house, i have to take down all my prince posters and put away all my prince paraphernalia for fear of taking any pictures at said party, because if i ever shared them online i could be sued for having a musicology poster in the background?

that's where this is going, and i'm not gonna shed one polite little crocodile tear when some steadfast lil' fammy fam gets a cease and desist for posting a pic of their graffiti bridge bedroom mural.

once people realize this has the potential to be a bigger problem than "thou shalt not maketh the precious little baby prince child weep", maybe we can have a real conversation on this topic.

that pic of me in my three chains o' gold underwear is gonna come back to haunt me....disbelief

Now I am defintily on Prince's side! biggrin

through history something was always taken from another culture and used for some other purpose like advertising in commercials(beatles, sly and family stone etc).little richard always said he was the creator of rock and roll but who has a graceland and calls himself the "king".i remember someone redone the song tootie fruity and became a star in america in the 50's(pat boone).we all remember the wierd al/coolio incident.the song in both versions were good, wierd al didnt have coolio's consent to redo his version of the song gangsters paradise, but coolio had permission from stevie wonders record label to redo the original song ghetto paradise(i dont know if stevie gave consent).my point is this we all should have the right to control our creations because there is always someone who will used someone else's work to make a profit or fame.i am just as guilty i have dvds and songs that i bought from people who made a profit off of me,so coming from both sides of this,i understand Prince's point. if i can call attention to the song "when will we b paid".thats says it all 4 me.

so you think it's okay that if i ever have a party at my house, i have to take down all my prince posters and put away all my prince paraphernalia for fear of taking any pictures at said party, because if i ever shared them online i could be sued for having a musicology poster in the background?

that's where this is going, and i'm not gonna shed one polite little crocodile tear when some steadfast lil' fammy fam gets a cease and desist for posting a pic of their graffiti bridge bedroom mural.

once people realize this has the potential to be a bigger problem than "thou shalt not maketh the precious little baby prince child weep", maybe we can have a real conversation on this topic.

I think your thinking of YouTube is pretty far off. It can be used to garner fame, but that's not necessarily the case. Accidental fame happens rarely on YouTube. And do you really think the person who posted that video with her baby was looking to gain fame? In the land of "America's Funniest Videos" I have to think differently. And I think the song used could have been anyones, it just happened to be Prince.

Many use it to share videos with friends. Be it a graduation, friends goofing around or maybe a video of a baby dancing to Prince. Or just something they thought was funny or cute or wild. Oft times people will put up content to share to the world that they may have never seen. This can be a live performance or an old video. I've seen some things on there that took me back to my childhood or perhaps I caught a performance that I would never have seen or knew existed. Part of YouTube is capturing video history. I dount anyone posting an old Deelite video that you can't get at all, or the performance where James Brown calls Prince on stage and Prince falls over is looking for any fame. Just looking to share video history. Granted, they may not have the right to post such material, but I disagree with that concept simply based on that they are not making money, nor is the footage they are posting available to be bought.

You know there is a video on YouTube of silly drunk people singing 3121 in the street boxed Should that be taken down?

i'm not "selling" a pic of me to anyone, whether there's a prince poster in the background or not! lol

but really, think of the precedent he could set: if it works for prince, why can't it work for any celebrity? and if it works for celebrities, why can't it work for corporations? why couldn't mcdonalds sue you over a picture of grandma with a big mac in her hand? why wouldn't it work for ANYONE with ENOUGH MONEY?

this is why i am very clear in my dissent regarding prince's latest tantrums, and this is why i say it's a bigger issue than just a bunch of bitter prince fans whining once again. for me, it's definitely free expression issue and there is absolutely no reason incidental images of prince should be considered detrimental to his image or to his career.

and if a license plate has a reference to prince, there is nothing he can do about that and a picture of that plate has nothing to do with his image or career, either.

i agree with the person who called prince's behavior pathological. i think it's paranoid and worrisome. to use a popular word on this site lately, i don't "hate" prince. to be really honest, i'm concerned about him.

Keep the peace or whatever is said in the org hood. cool

LOVE U ORG!!! LOVE U PRINCE! LOVE THE MUSIC!! cool

Love4OneAnother cool

This is nothing new. Everytime he tries this the fans get pissy. Then he lets up and all is ok...bitter but ok. There is resentment that has been buiding up over the years and it it because of his treatment to his hardcore base who love his music very much. Much of this resentment has to do with that we don't experience this from any other artist.

The 3 sites involved...DO NOT MAKE MONEY FROM HIM. NOR DO THEY HINDER ANYTHING HE IS TRYING TO ACCOMPLISH. They simply provide a place to hang and talk about his music and share experiences. They keep his fan base flourishing. And honestly, if there weren't these sites around he would not have the core he does right now.

So that's my thoughts on this and yes I hear ya Prince and I agree with your point.

i'm sorta with ya chilton.
i'm not dealing with legalities here which are a separate issue, but i do believe that this site overall is very far from something that prince could be proud of.

u know the Frightening thing is, and i have read of actual occurances of what i will relate next. This is Enlightening and here is the gist. If a person writes or creates something. and some other being is lawless enough to later change the meaning or words after the Author died, because strangers decided to use someone elses art wrongfully, then a whole lot of people would be in the dark as to the true meaning of the Song, Lyric, Book any Artistic Creation. Someone could ruin someone else's honest Artistic Works or Creations for whatever reason they chose. i read about something similar in a local paper a while back , i wish i had kept the Aritcle for reference.

You know, this is a great point. I read Nietzshce alot, and much of his work was changed after he passed. His sister gained the rights to his work, who was sympathetic to the Nazi cause. This allowed Hitler to abuse Nietzsche's works so that they benefited his cause. Nietzsche had a rather unique style of writing. However, in it's uniqueness, it allows for misinterpretation of his philosophy. Hitler, for example, twisted Nietzsche's writings and used them in Nazi propaganda. Nietzsche's writings supposedly were the basis of National Socialism and Fascism possibly by misinterpreting his factual claims as moral claims. However it occured, it is still a fact that Nietzsche's writings were used in some capacity as justification for attempting to rid the world of certain ethnicities, or the nonSuperman materials, in the opinion of the Nazi's and other associated groups.

So, given the age we're in, where the internet allows essentially anything to take place with one's words, music, art, etc., I think it's very wise of artists to attempt to retain their hold on their material. Who knows what the future holds.

All gone.

"If it's only about discussing Prince's music, you won't need pictures!"

I don't know the history of the fan sites. Google provides links to bootlegging info, maybe Prince can sue Google. Of course that may take awhile considering there are a zillion other search engines to a zillion other links to a zillion other sites with access to images, info, etc. etc.

So why is Prince so concerned about his fan sites? Hmmmm.

Images are a form of communication. So are song lyrics.

Prince has now found himself in world quite different from MTV and the media monopoly on selective artists (at least to the extent it was). Prince is pretty much doing what he's always done, trying to buck the mainstream and being completely different from what's going on around him (apparently even at the cost of his fans), which is now the reality that anyone can post on Itunes, anyone can post a music video. I mean have you checked peoples' networking/social pages lately? Everybody wants to be Britney Spears. Everybody wants to be a star. And we're all impressed. Yawn.

Nevertheless, some gain mainstream media attention and noteriety. It's only going to get more intense. In my opinion, Prince want's off the boat and willing to sue bouncing babes to do it. He wants to retract from this networking boom.

Too late buddy.
