I can see the gender bending comparison but I don't hear anything musically in Prince's music to suggest he was even faintly influenced by glam or any period of Bowie's career, especially his Berlin work. I wish he had been but honestly, I think that level of music is beyond him. I know Eno respected some of Prince's work but if you said Eno to Prince he'd likely thinking you were talking about a card game. And I also stand by my earlier statement that Bolan was never big in America. Ultimately if any of these artists were such favorites of Prince, I'd think at some point he would have covered them, be it a few bars in concert, rehearsal or aftershow, but he never has. And Dirty Mind, even the tour, was no where near as raw or charging as The Stooges or The Dolls. The only thing comparable there is the fact that skin was exposed. I think Prince would have been scared shitless by the Stooges. Like I stated earlier, I'm not into trying to convince u or change your mind about some shit like who Prince was influenced by. It's not that serious. I know what I think and what I believe. U can stand by shit untill the cows come home. More power to ya. I DO think that u greatly under estimate Prince and his knowledge of music and different genres. Glam isn't the most difficult genre to write and it's far from being over Prince's head. Or out of his grasp. To me, clearly, P has been influenced by Bolan's material. ESPECIALLY his vocals. During the 80's, I have heard this from several other people. As I've mentioned, I have heard it from people on here. Besides Cymone telling me that he knew Marc was a fave of P. Bowie as well. Even Marc's solo's, the tone and type of distortion he used, P himself has used. Very Bolanish, I feel. I think it's even more OBVIOUS that P was influenced by Bowie. Musically and visually. Bowie is someone P has patterened himself after regarding his image. Especially in the 80's. The guitar solo to Moonage Daydream, by a fave guitarist of mine, Mick Ronson, echoes some of P's solos. The styling and phrasing of it. The way Bowie mixed rock with funk, starting from 74, I think, I think P was very hipped to. His lyrics too. Even the song this thread is suppose to be about might have some Bolan influence in it. He loved to compare sex to driving a car. "just like a car you're pleasing to behold I'll call you Jaguar if I may be so bold" T.Rex - Jeepster I know it's rude, she's a dude, but all I want is easy action baby! -Marc Bolan

P wearing the bikini briefs is all Iggy and folks would have to be blind not to see that. U would never hear me say that P was a raw as the Stooges. But that wasn't the point. I stated that he was influenced by Iggy. And he was. P was not only influenced by Johhny Thunders visually during Dirty Mind but musically as well. Listen to "Vietnamese Baby" by the Dolls and then listen to "Ronnie Talk To Russia". That's a blatant bite Prince made from that song. P LOVED Todd Rundgren. Todd produced the Doll's first album. There is no way in hell P didn't know that. As far as Bowie, listen to P's "Scarlet Pussy" and then listen to Bowie's intro to the Diamond Dogs album. On the line "any day now" to be precise. My point is that whole passage P borrowed from Bowie. I don't think P would would have been afraid of The Stooges, cuz it was a show. That's like him being afraid of KISS. Now would P cut himself all up with glass and shit like Iggy did? Fuck no. And I don't blame him, but right on for Iggy if that's what he wanted to do on stage. My point is this, I've given a few song to song comparisons that I feel the bite is obvious. If other's don't hear that or can't relate, that's still cool. I'm just sharing what I feel and think, like I always do. It's not about trying to sell somebody on something. I

So the car as a woman metaphor is that distinctive in pop music? Maybe "Kells" was influenced by Bolan for "You Remind Me of Something"! "What kind of fuck ending is that?"

Ultimately, if Prince was influenced by Bowie, which goes well beyond the realm of glam, I'd think there'd be hints of it in his studio work from 78-80, yet there's nothing, especially Prince's first two albums that would lead one to think this man has ever heard anything other than soul and top 40. And, as I said, he seems to cover his favorite artists quite frequently -- never been a peep of Bowie, Bolan or anything glam in his career. If he didn't know anything of the Beatles outside of their most popular radio tracks until Wendy and Lisa introduced him to their work, I have a hard time believing he was listening to Bowie, Bolan, Iggy and especially the New York Dolls. No hard feelings.

blackguitaristz said: I've ran a few threads on this very song awhile back. But mine of course, was dealing with the 12' version. The "MAYDAY" version. Or more specific, the "Black" version. Which DESTROYS the album version. The other thread dealt with Bebe Buell, the famous 70's model, who's the mother of Liv Tyler. Who's dad is Steven. Anyway, in her book, she swears that LRC is about her. Saying that P actually says her name in the song. On the line "baby, you're much too fast." She and her friend Elvis Costello both swear that P is singing "Bebe, you're much to fast.". Costello, who was dating Bebe, accussed her of dating P, because why else would he say her name? True story. It's all in her book that came out a couple of years ago. This song was heavily discussed on my thread that's been up for awhile now, about the singles that were released from the 1999 album.
A little honesty here.... Being a Prince fan starting in the cassette age, and being only 30 yrs old I have only heard the Ultimate featured 12inche. But I agree completely this "mayday version" is insane. The rhythm guitar is mind blowing. This is where you really see some genius. I love the distorted clipped vocals, the deviations from normal recording techniques can not be underplayed, the fact that they are left in are even more inspiring Music is the best...

Who inspired this song and why?? (I know someone knows the answer out there!) Have always liked this song. Funny thing, as I was driving to visit family this morning, there was guy in a brand new red corvette--the minute I saw him, the song popped into my mind and I just started laughing as I sped up and passed him (just had to see who was driving it).

Always loved it, then heard him do a few verses acoustically at the O2 show as part of the medley - absolutely blew me away. Completely changed the whole sound and feel of the song.. i thought it came out a little bit bluesey. I think my jaw literally dropped! You might not like the taste but I'm still gonna stick your face in this FUNK

One of the best songs EVER! When I heard P do this on the Musicology tour acoustically, I damn near lost my mind. It was like I died and went to heaven. The 12 inch version is just plain bonkers! Love it to death! I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

it might sound totally out of place but being as you guys are discussing his different genre mixing and out of the way influences, I'd like to point out that I thought the song was a brilliant use of classical baroque music. For some of you who can't believe Prince would be influenced by certain individuals, the man was always a genius at assimilating sounds and imagery from everywhere, not just R&B.

to prince for little red corvette. a classic, no doubt. i do think the "dance remix" is just a little bit better than the album version. they both rock though. one of my favorites as well. For all time I am with you, you are with me.

I love this song too. However, i've always wondered about the first line he sings when he says "By the way u parked your car sideways..." I used to think she physically parked the car sideways, which is more than strange possible. I now figure it means she turns sideways in her seat to park it. Who knows?
The one line from a song that truly baffles me!!
