Why O' Why DO people not LEAVE "PR" as is.. No remakes.. PLEASE.. The only one who I ever heard do a justified rendition of purple rain..and not on record but live..Is PATTI LABELLE.... but Alicia you need to leave PR alone I could'nt agree with u more including P LaBelle. "Purple Rain" is in a "class" all by itself...it's Prince, and "no one" including Alicia can touch it. Uhn, uhn. Don't you be bad mouthing my Patti. Just joking. _________________________________________

OMG It IS! How rude
I take it he must know, she spoke with him when she was in London recently I don't think ANYONE should touch PR - it belongs to Prince and only Prince IMO [Edited 11/28/07 8:48am]

Lets not forget Prince took the whole middle section of Planet Earth from Barry Manilow's Could it be Magic almost note for note "We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F

Did you guys also listen to the "like you'll never see me again" duet by Tilly Key and Trevor Wesley. They even ended the song with the Purple Rain lyrics.
I don't know who they are, but the way they covered the song was so beautiful, that I don't even mind that they used part of a Prince song. It just goes to show how much people still appreciate the song Purple Rain. I came across it when I was looking for the Alicia Keys version on youtube. You have got to check this one out. I'm pretty sure there is going to be some legal action if Prince doesn't agree with their version. But Alicia Keys should be safe, Prince admires her music and I'm pretty sure she asked him for permission to use part of the melody. love the one who is Love!

The piano in this song sounds identical to the piano part at the end of "Purple Rain". RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

I kind of agree...there are wonderful singers that can do great remakes...but I do believe that "Purple Rain" should be left alone....
It always should have been, I even think that Prince and Beyonce should have chosen another song... Sometimes, a song...has a life of it's own that needs to be respected. "The Lion Sleeps Tonight...

It's growing on me... it definitely has a PR feel, maybe thats why I'm beginning to like it so much.

i can hear purp rain AND diamonds & pearls.
it's a nice song, but she's done herself no favours by borrowing. all anyone can hear is prince! purple r is so iconic tht no artist in their right mind should attempt 2 modify it in any way shape or form.,,howeva it's a lovely album! 'where do we go from here' is very amy winehouse-esque. i'd love 2 hear amy sing this song

Obviously, Alicia's a massive Prince fan. I knew she would knock out a 'written in the style of' song soon enough. To mind, the only other track that captures Prince's essence, but creates something nice and new out of it, is D'Angelo's 'Untitled'.
Is Alicia completely original? Who is? Where does creativity come from...? It was the first song I went back to when I got the album, thinking... hmm, this sounds terrifically like Prince. Glad to hear I'm not imagining things. "Don't give me no funky, funky blue cheese, we're all members of the animal kingdom..."

Alicia seems to knows what she'd like to try then tries it. Nice lyrics too.

Well Alicia's music is very much inspired by Prince obviously and of course she's a huge fan but I have to say that I like the song. "And When The Groove Is Dead And Gone, You Know That Love Survives, So We Can Rock Forever" RIP MJ
"Baby, that was much too fast"...Goodnight dear sweet Prince. I'll love you always

I don't hear PR, I hear more of Diamonds & Pearls in Alicia's song. It's a nice song but one I wouldn't put on repeat. Jeux Sans Frontiers

Why O' Why DO people not LEAVE "PR" as is.. No remakes.. PLEASE.. The only one who I ever heard do a justified rendition of purple rain..and not on record but live..Is PATTI LABELLE.... but Alicia you need to leave PR alone 1. I heard this on the radio last week, and immediately thought the verse melody and background keys twinkling were TOTALLY ripped from Diamonds & Pearls!!! (the parts that start "every time you .... " etc.) 2. Now I'm listening again, the little downward chord progression seems to also come from Purple Rain (what Prince plays on his piano listening to W&L's tape in the movie). Granted, it's not that original to begin with, but a coincidence? I don't hear any PR melody in this though. 3. WHAT Patti LaBelle version of PR are you referring to? I only know of when she sang part of it at The Family Jamm. 4. Has Alicia ever "written" a song that doesn't copy or sample someone else, credited or not? [Edited 1/12/08 17:04pm]
