Yes, he recorded it himself and then recorded a version with Martika on her album 'Martika's Kitchen'.
MS One of my fave Prince-penned songs.

I dont much like the demo he did for it, but the live version he performed some years ago was awesome...those guitar solos were just fantastic. I wish he'd release that performace officially to give us a chance to own a decent copy of it. It was one of his best songs of the 90's.
Does anyone know of any other versions that exist, other than the two listed above. I also like Open Book and Spirit that he did with Martika. They could have sounded really good with a little more work.

Actually some of the sonic textures of "Love... Thy Will Be Done" were recycled for "One Of Us" as well. That or I'm suffering from hypocondria.

On Martika's version, does Prince have an unlisted credit as a backing vocalist. I remember I first heard Martika's version when I was about 12 wondering if it was P. or not.
I know that Rahsaan Patterson is one of the backing vocalists at least. (who remembers him doing "Cantaloop - Flip Fantasia" by US3!!!) "Even when there's no peace outside my window there is peace inside and that's Y I can no longer run... Love Thy Will B done" 'dre Tried many flavours - but sooner or later, always go back to the Purple Kool-aid!

Prince wrote it and recorded the demo. There is also a version with with NPG with Sonny singing lead. Much funkier than the orginal. Great on it. I've also heard Prince's live version which musically sounded like Sonny's, but Sonny's vocal worked better.
I met Martika last year and she singed my Martika's kitchen album which has her version. I would say they dropped her vocals on Prince's recorded version. Whenever "One of Us" comes on, I immediately think it's going to be "Love...Thy Will Be Done" and become disappointed when I realize what it is.

ya, p put that same loop on "one of us," and used it on motherless child from the septimo show, nov 1999. Stand at the crossroads, and look, and ask for the ancient paths...(Jeremiah 6:16) www.ancientfaithradio.com

One of Prince's all-time best outtakes. I wish he had kept it for himself and put it out on Crystal Ball or something.

This is simply a BEAUTIFUL song; so rich, textured and organic.
I remember, years ago, a friend from Uni (who never understood my obsession with Prince's music!) listening to this and describing it as 'perfect in every way' - the sound, the mood, the composition, everything. Apparently, there's a version in the Vault featuring Prince and Martika as a duet.

It's one of those songs you'll love on an outtake collection, but would certainly HATE it on a real album release!

They are... | |

An outtake collection is a bootleg. Once they've been released officially they no longer classify as "outtakes". Only as outtakes from an album session, perhaps.

Moderator | That one back to back with Open Book is cool.
That's how I first heard it. I wonder if Open Book was for Martika as well? All Rights Reserved. |
