I didn't sign up for this... [DreamyPop's thoughts on the fiasco]

I came with certain objectives in mind:

* To learn more about Prince's career from those who've known him longer
* Find out which albums I should have in my collection
* To discuss his music and almost everything relating to him

I've gained a lot of knowledge in the short time I've been here.

But I didn't sign up for the disapproval rating towards Prince.
All of the bad mouthing over his actions is getting out of hand.

I mean, it's called a fansite, right? Aren't fans people who actually support and care about the output of an artist so much that they come here to discuss it and make friends who share similar opinions of said artist?

I look around here lately and I see few people who fit my definiton of fan, which is a synonym for supporter/admirer.

I'm not saying that I agree with the extents that he's going to in order to censor [and perhaps silence] fansites. But I don't think he really wants to go through all this trouble. Maybe he feels its something he has to do. They do say he is overprotective of his work, right? That's why he wanted his masters back for WB and got into the whole battle. This is probably the exact same thing, but on a far greater scale so more people are affected.

People claim that Prince owes them. I don't think he owes us anything. He has given us his musical gifts in album form almost yearly. Few other artists distribute that much material. They should be grateful he's at least giving us that.

I'm hedging my bets, which is why I posted this:

So far, no one has been sued. Prince even gave a shout-out to Housequake for taking down a prematurely-leaked snippet of the long-awaited SHOE video. No, this is not an Al Bundy-inspired piece. SHOE is "Somewhere Here On Earth".

But Prince's gentlemanly nod to Housequake has so far been ignored by everyone but me. Which is why I am the only one who will ever hear what's in the Vault.

DPR,

You got all that, and it's still here. The current firestorm falls under your third category: "his music and almost everything relating to him." To be honest, it kind of sounds like you signed up for a cult and were disappointed when you didn't get it. Some people's comments are extreme, but so what? (And for the record, a lot of pro-Prince people are saying some really horrible things too.)

The "People claim that Prince owes them" bit is such a straw man argument. That's not the issue. By the way, are you willing to swear that every single Prince item you acquired in the nine months you've been a fan was purchased legally? If not, you're part of Prince's problem and are exactly what he is pissed about.

Well what Prince is doing right now is pretty extreme so you can't expect people NOT to complain or vent. Personally, I think Prince is being a jerk about the whole situation but I'm still a fan and i'll still continue to buy his albums and support him b/c it's really all about the music for me where Prince is concerned.

Yes, it's a fansite, but as fans, we do have the right to voice our opinion. He doesn't owe his fans anything as far as what music he wants to put out but he doesn't have to be so nasty about it. He has definitely earned his big disapproval rating. People can be fans and not like the nonsense that he is doing.

What's a fan community site without the artist to support? A community site!

This is a large community of people who have in more ways than one, supported and cared about the output of this artist so much that we come here to discuss it and made friends who share similar opinions of said artist throughout his entire career!

The reason there is so much discord at the moment is because doing what he's doing is simply not right!

You say you've been a fan for nine months. Ok, search my screen name on the org and go back nine months then pick any thread I've posted on from that time til you run out of threads and you'll see that I've been one of Prince's biggest fans and supporters!

The only person on this planet that could turn me against Prince was Prince, himself! Which is why I'm so upset!

You should see the Halo 3 boards. Just because this is a message forum about somebody or something, doesn't mean the "fans" will always post positive things. Why would they? An album, or game, or whatever comes out and we judge it. It wouldn't be real that way. We say what we want to say, and give our opinions.

I'm not really for putting Prince down and acting like he is evil or something cause thats just not me...but I don't agree with some of his recent actions and its made me kinda turned off to him and his music lately. I haven't even been checking this forum like I usually do cause I know there will be no (good) new news.

Just more talk about whoever Prince is suing now sad
If you will, so will I

I do believe that all the cussing/over the top remarks about him has gone too far.

You, yourself can make up your mind and band up with the others on this site who truley support him despite his actions. There is nothing wrong with that..its just that people who have been by his side for years now feel betrayed. Thats why the PFU board has over 30 pages.

But one thing u have to understand is a site as big as this one with the different personalities/different age groups/walks of life...etc.- of course some are gonna take what he has done to the extreme negative/cussing and others are going to applaud him for standing up for himself.

I, personally ..think that its a move of security and power. If he can control everything about himself ..he can therefore control the market. Which is were true money/power is. But if he cant he's like all the other celebrities out there and is at the mercy of the media/ his fans.

I believe that Prince must come to the conclusion that you cannot control every ascpect of whatever buisness your in. And he being in the music buisness is trying to have unpresedented power that no other has had b4.

This is planet earth which is unperfect, where the limit really is the sky. When u push people too hard here they quit on you. Not Utopia where if you use and abuse people who love you they will never give up and throw parade's/celebrations for u anyway.

Growing up in a buisness I saw that as hard as you might try to control and plan for the future...something is always gonna fall in your lap and make things hard.So in a way I can see where he is comming from as a buisness man.Protect your investments..and his is his image/productions.

To break new ground in the buisness your in..your gonna have to crack knuckles and loose friends. And its gonna be lonley and cold at the top. Its almost like when in the 80's Michael Jackson outbid Paul McCartney for own his beatles masters. Shrewd/selfish..but buisness is buisness. Michael lost a friend but he has been living off of those masters for close to 20 years.

But Prince's shrewdness and insensitivity toward those who support him/patrons of his music (his fans..or friends like he called us on Oprah confused ) turns me off. Its not against another buisness opponent (like McCartney) its against those who truley love his music. - So you have to understand where all the hatred and dissapointment is comming from.

Sorry folks this post was so long. wink

Prince doesn't owe us shit.....except a huge ass THANK YOU for keeping him RICH. You are new in your fandom so I can't blame you for having rose colored glasses on but some of us, like myself, have been a part of this community for 10 years. That is 10 years of support from people like myself, not to mention the 18 years of support prior to joining this site. If the thanks we get for actually supporting him is a lawsuit, you will have to excuse us for voicing our disgust.

Prince himself considers "Fan" to be shortform for "Fanatic". He hated the term so much he coined "Fam", which was supposed to be shortform for "Family". It didn't catch on . . .

Well, although I am not nearly as bitter or venimous as some orgers are toward Prince these days, I have adopted the PFU avatar out of respect for Ben and the Org. I have tried (and am still trying) not to take sides on the Prince v. Internet issue, but I think that at this point I want to be part of PFU because I care about prince.org

It's been tough for me, because I don't want to come off as being hardcore anti-Prince, but yet I understand where the fansites are coming from...

Admittedly, it didn't change a lot. But we are not the same people or the same community as back then. I stumbled on Prince.org and saw the lawsuits about the same time. I had no idea what the lawsuits were about. I'm more educated now and not willing to bend to threats like a younger person would be. We are smarter and stronger now. We wereren't in the first round. Things will change this time. Many of us are off this ride for good.

Hey don't worry..just enjoy the ride for what it is...Prince won't be on Earth forever and when he's gone we will all miss his music and the "lawsuits" will just be bits of old paper know one will care about... it's the music we will care for and feel... PEACE & LOVE! wink
Da, Da, Da....Emancipation....Free..don't think I ain't..! London 21 Nights...Clap your hands...you know the rest..
James Brown & Michael Jackson RIP, your music still lives with us!
