can't argue..even though i really like the album.. had he produced another couple of successful albums after purple rain,..i think things would have been a lot different.. atwiad was just too big a stretch for a lot of people, when he had them in the palm of his hand.

that wasn't a mistake,ATWIAD was the bravest thing he ever did.He was even stating "screw the charts!" back then at the height of his fame. and 'parade' only emphasised that point. It makes me laugh to think how many casual music fans must bought that on the back of 'kiss', and expected more of the same.well tough shit! Prince is his own man, just like Liberace!!!

Signing the Warners deal in '93 ...thinking he could "scam" his way out by
changing his name... | |

There's been a bunch...
Fluffing off Warner Bros... I'm thankful for the abundance of music, which would not have been available, but I think this really killed him. You just get a 100 mill. contract for 6 albums and a Vice President Title at WB and then quit...Not a good move.. Producing/writing his own movies and videos. ie: Under The Cherry, GB... Don't get me wrong, I like the movies, but the general public did not. Name change. Although, it probably kept him more public than had he not changed it. cracknbush

Many of the singles that were chosen from his albums. Alphabet St. and I wish u heaven instead of Anna Stesia. And Thieves in the temple was a bad single.
But he corrected every possible mistake by doing nothing but follow his heart these days. It makes his former mistakes irrelevant.

I thought him not touring the states supporting Sign 'o' The Times (I think Eric Leeds brought this up once). He could've easily gotten another top 10 hit out of the album (Play In The Sunshine, Strange Relationship, Forever In My Life, take your pick), came to the states and toured. The movie was just not enough. I think he would've won back a lot of fans that were put off by ATWIAD. He shouldn't have released If I Was Your Girlfriend as a single either...(strong album-cut not a top forty tune).
Also THEN releasing Lovesexy, which wasn't near as strong, and with him butt-ass naked on the cover blew any momentum he had with Signs.

Becoming a JW and releasing the horrible, TRC.
Letting Larry run his life. Not giving MAyte her daily recommended diet of red meat. And by the way. ATWIAD is a great album. All you others say Hell Yea!!

So many things rocked his boat so to speak. But I would say the thing that hurt him the most was waging the War against Warners and painting Slave on the side of his face. The public and his fans just didn't understand this and thought he was Weird and a Spoiled -Ass Cry-Baby.

Fighting his contract so hard. Don't get me wrong, it's totally fucked what happened with WB but if he just stuck it out and delivered the albums, perhaps he would have had a better leg to stand on when negotiating for his masters. I totally respect Prince for having the guts to fight but I feel it would have been in his best interest to try and work things out instead of blowing a huge gasket. It got him nowhere.
Also allowing Kirky J to have such a huge role in his music and isolating himself into a pattern of dulldrum during the years. A lot of people lost interest. What could have been a true era of "freedom" instead turned into a very angry and "wandering" period for Prince. By the way I don't think Prince is weird and a spoiled-ass cry baby. I'm just stating what I think others thought about him and his antics. I'll always be a fan even when I say I won't go to a concert how can I not?

Wasn't Gold being held back by WB? I remember him petitioning fans to contact WB and free Gold. 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

A few critical mistakes in the last decade were...
* Not capitalising on the success of The Most Beautiful Girl single with an excellent Gold Experience album follow up * Releasing Emancipation as a 3CD set rather than keeping it simple with 13 tracks * Failing to funk out Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic in a similar fashion to how he produced Diamonds And Pearls Single biggest mistake, turning himself into The Artist Formerly Known As ...
