Swearing.

Just been listening to lolita, and there is a line in there, 'I must admit, long ago we'd have been the sh**'

It occurs to me that ok prince isn't swearing in his new material and performances, but surely isn't inferring a swear just as bad, or essentially the same thing?

Surely if your avoiding swearing in your songs for moralistic reasons, you wouldn't even want to suggest swear words, otherwise whats the point in not doing it in the first place?

The same could be said for anyone who says 'Gosh' instead of 'God', or 'flip' instead of 'fuck', 'sugar' instead of 'shit' etc - The intention is the same, regardless of the word used.

One can only assume that the person who uses such substitutions believes in some magical property to the actual sound of the word, as opposed to it's intended use.

Or something. wacky

If you think of a swear word, you might as well say it!
He probably hasn't gotten to the part in the bible yet, where it says: 'How a man thinketh, so is he' biggrin .
But I give him credit for making the effort to not swear anymore!

Also "we'd be the shit" isn't really a swear like, oh, say "ur face looks like shit"
Intent, its all about intent.

eek If 'we'd be the shit' is a compliment and not a swear word, why do you think he doesn't spell it out?

Anxiety

he likes to tease us with profanity without actually forming the words, because he knows certain fans want him to use it and other fans are "policing" his lyrics and waiting for him to slip up. to me, the intent is just as potent as actually saying the word, but hey - it's his game and it doesn't mean a thing to me, so i hope he has fun with it! shrug

"the shit" means "the best" you know that, right?

Some people just consider swearing rude, regardless of meaning, they just don't wanna hear all that. WHich is perfectly understandable.

I am aware of the meaning and I believe Prince meant 'the best', but my question remains: Why didn't he spell it out then?

Calling people ugly and poor are just as bad as swearing, isn't it?

Prince doesn't hesitate to use four letter words still. rolleyes
