Snip Web Sheriff insist Prince himself has nothing to do with the lawsuit threat - it is the work of record label. Web Sheriff's managing director, John Giacobbi, says, "At no time is Prince suing his fans and this is not about freedom of speech. "The current issue is one between Prince's record label and three unofficial web sites and relates to the use of Prince trademarks and photographs, many of which are Prince's copyright." Snip Just one question, Mr. Sheriff. IF Prince has a record label acting on his behalf then it is only one that he has signed to recently as it has been public knowledge that since WB he has hopped labels here and there for one-album deals only. Therefore, this "record label" is claiming rights for images produced BEFORE Prince was signed to them and therefore not acting within any rights of theirs. Also, why Prince pictures only? Why not any of the "labels" other artists? IF Prince, as you say, has nothing to do with this, then why hasn't he issued a statement via his website to the effect of "hang on, guys, this is not my doing"? I'm assuming he hasn't done this because he either a) agrees with whoever has done this b) is acutally behind it himself or c) does not know. I'm positive that it couldn't possibly be c) which only leaves two options. Can the mods here clarify how the original C&D was presented to them? I realise you cannot/will not/should not etc reproduce it but I would have thought that it should surely clarify WHERE the request had originated from? From my limited legal knowledge, I would have thought that any request to remove or alter content (online or otherwise) should have an acknowledged origin. Web Sheriff should have stated that he was acting on behalf of Prince or "record label name". If I'm wrong, I stand corrected - just my inital thoughts | |
