Prince's problem with fansites is irrelevant.

You'd think with 32,000 members of Housequake alone, plus all the users of prince.org and princefams, the following would be possible:

#1 All sites exist in harmony, for different purposes.
#1A - 3121 is the official site
#1B - All other fansites are just that... not official.

#2 Prince could be kind to his fansites.

#3 In return, Prince could directly use each fansite to market any official release or to help spread the word about concerts or his charity.

For instance:

If Prince would allow users to vote on say 20 unreleased tracks... the 10 songs with the highest votes would be compiled and sold for $100 ($10 a song), with say a portion of the proceeds going to his love4oneanother charity, I'd bet most of the 32,000 Housequake, Prince.org, and Princefams users would buy it immediately.

He's got guaranteed revenue even before ANY compilation would ever hit the torrent sites. Why mess it up? $320,000 for 10 unreleased songs is some NICE PROFIT!

Why stoop to paying lawyers to threaten fans for posting pictures of a symbol tattoo? Those matters are so irrelevant... why bother?

Because he's an ass who lives in a bubble with too much money to throw at lawyers and no conscience towards loyal fans.

I'm not getting any tattoos removed or selling what I already purchased. I'd still like to see Prince in concert and buy his music. However I also like to download unreleased music and concerts. I'd also buy anything he releases.

But that's not what I'm talking about.

Does it really make a difference is someone posted a picture of Prince for other people to view? Does it matter if Billy Meyer from Indiana posted a negative review about Prince's latest video? Does it really matter if T. D'Aquino wrote about Cosmic Day and how great it is compared to some of Prince's other music? Does it really matter?

All sites can exist in harmony. Prince should stop the legal threats. With great power, comes great responsibility.

320K may seem like a lot of income to people who make what you and I make.

But to anyone already sitting on millions, it's peanuts, especially since pursuit of such a goal would likely be undercut by bootleg copies sold by "fans" who were only trying to "show their appreciation" by "promoting his music for him" to third parties on their terms.

Even if there are only 50,000 of us across the sites. Thats a damn site more than the 11,000 voting on 3121.

That could be his real problem.

Good point. This all could simply be a ploy to get his online fanbase to exclusively visit 3121.com. However, without the right to free speech there, and conversations just like this one, I dont see those numbers turning out, even with no other options.

Of course, the fan base could be driven underground again. I remember the old days....paper newsletters, answering machine news....
