I don'think they are jamming and Rick took a big swig of Jack Daniels before he went on stage. (They film him killing the bottle) Maybe he was having a bad night.

I rented the DVD of Rick in Germany from 82. Just not a good show. I have a tape of P in Houston from 81. The songs just rock and the audience is going crazy.

I don't know if that's a fair statement though, your talking about an American audience versus a German one; & I'm no expert on German culture or anything, but I don't think they go crazy for anyone other than David Hasselhoff. But they were jamming to the funk.

He said in his book that he often had a drink before he performed, and sometimes smoked a joint. Before the height of his cocaine addiction where he was freebasing before he performed, but I think the Germany show was a good performance, so I guess we can just agree to disagree.

Exactly!! I love Rick, but I think he was just mad that Prince was probably stealing his THUNDER not his act. cool
I don't see ANY similarities in Prince's music or image with Rick's.
As far as the people who say Prince doesn't bring the hard funk...
STUPID.

Prince ain't never funked as hard as Rick. Never.

Much respect to your opinion, but it is a largely subjective statement to say
"Prince ain't never funked as hard as Rick." How can you quantify that? Prince's funkiness, HARD FUNKINESS, is the reason why many of us are on this site. If you think that he hasn't funked as hard as Rick, then it is very sad to know that you have failed to feel it. Some of the funkiest songs I've heard live are "Soft and Wet," "Let's Work," with horn sections; a musical element Prince didn't use in early recordings, but when used LIVE, it's all over. One of the funkiest men that ever walked the planet, Roger Troutman, said "Thank you Prince, cuz you sound so good to me" in his song "It Doesn't Really Matter." Coming from Roger (RIP), that carries a lot of funk weight. And please don't forget the funky-ass songs he created for The Time.
