Perhaps in their enthusiasm, people tend to exagerate just a tad bit on this site, for better or worse. Of all the funk I have encountered in life as a genre, I don't know that I could dub ONE ALBUM as "The Funkiest".

And regarding The Black Album specifically, I wouldn't trust that much of what's available for sale out there today are authentic issues, and not just some poorly reproduced copy someone burned from their computer. Buyer beware, lots of incentive out there ($$$) for people to get creative and sell it to you for $50 - $100 as "The Black Album".

Perhaps I'm a hopeless optimist, but I feel at some point Prince will find a way to remaster his catalog from the master tapes and make it available for sale. He's just too proud of his work to NOT do that (once it's easy enough for him to pull off). In my opinion, he's just got to make sure FIRST that he has complete control over it all.

Romeoblu

I first heard the black album on the evening of the 31/10/1989 on a tape someone at school had given me.

Every November I listen this album a whole lot more than any other.

it's my fourth favorite album.

the ultimate party album dancing jig

Loved it from the first time I heard.
And I didn't even want it to begin with. Just wasn't something I was concerned with, that particular time in his life. And getting it would mean getting Lovesexy, which I really wasn't interested in.
Now I've got that on my wish list.

So much fun, I tell ya.
I starts out great and in some instances, its very catchy (Bob George and Superfunky...)

When 2 R in Love feels like such an outlier here... but its my favorite all the same. But as for a 2nd place, Superfunkycalifragisexy wins hands down, so much fun that it feels like I'm high... haha, or maybe that's the effect he wants you to have when you listen hmmm

Track 7, I'm not so into cuz its long and its instrumental... dont get into those much. "Rockhard in a funky place" is good, but I kinda wish it was longer.

Not quite in my top 6 albums, but its worthy of a mention somewhere in the middle of my "rankings"
had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. It started raining, baby, the birds were gone

nod And because it's so rare. The HAVE's seem to enjoy flaunting it in front of the HAVE NOT's. The music is not that much different from any other Prince album. Perhaps with the stated emphasis on R&B.

A disappointment. When many people, including myself, heard the title of this album, "The Black Album", we thought that it was going to be the type of music that Prince made back when he had mostly black fans.

It's a good album but it wasn't what I was expecting. It was the 1980s but Prince was still stuck in the 1970s.

It doesn't have to be an "authentic issue". If all his songs are on it, and it is clearly Prince, that's all that counts.
So, as far as I know, I have "the Black Album", and I LOVE IT!!!!!

One of P's most truest and honest album. Bob George is a masterpiece and TOTALLY laid the blue print down for Gangsta Rap. Not saying that's a good thing but...And P sounds waaay more authentic and real than many rappers on this track. The album shold have been released along with Lovesexy. I Know Warners wouldn't have wanted another double album right after Signs but still...

Cool - And for that matter, I was going to add: Neither would anyone have had to have paid a dime for it either.

I know technically "The Black Album" was recorded first, but I would have given the blue print for Gangsta Rap credit to N.W.A.'s "Straight Outta Compton". And you're right: A credit that neither Prince nor Ice Cube should be fighting over bitchfight .
