No way in hell do I question being a fan of Prince's. I've had my ups and downs with him and his choices in the past but it has never been enough for me to "throw in the towel". I'm here for life with the dude.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Hmmm.
Let me start this by saying that this will most likely be the most effort i've EVER put into ANY post that i've ever written here in the Org.

Because it speaks to the core of what i find is wrong with this place.

Like someone else previously said, it is a little difficult to identify with someone that's been a Prince fan for months, when i've been what equates to a Prince fan for my whole adult life. Let me say that part again. MY WHOLE ADULT LIFE.

I started listening to Prince in the 7th grade. I am now 40 years old. And i'm not over-stating when i say that listening to Prince changed my life and affected who i am as a person.

I can't even put into words what it was like to be a Prince fan in the 80's. The ONLY good thing to happen in the 80's, as far as i'm concerned. Being a young, black man growing up in Detroit, music was a part of our everyday lives. The radio back then was an amazing freeform hodge podge of all types and genres all getting played on what was then "urban radio". You had a black dj in Electrifying Mojo on what was an urban radio station hipping young black kids to acts such as The B-52's, The Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Cameo, Slave, Kraftwerk, etc. It was all over the place. And at the forefront of that music revolution, comes this little kid from Minneapolis.

I'll never forget the first time i heard Prince. It was like a light switch went off in my head. "Oh. That's what music is supposed to sound like." I was HOOKED. And stayed that way for years. My cousins lied to my folks and took me when i was 15 to my first Prince concert, the Controversy tour at the Masonic Temple. I was at the 1999 tour at Joe Louis Arena for the Triple Threat Tour (P, The Time and Vanity 6). (and i almost left after The Time's set, because they KILLED him that night.) (but that's another story) I went to the Purple Rain tour twice, because P sold out SEVEN shows in Detroit for that tour. And yes, I went to the birthday concert at Cobo Arena. I'm probably one of the few people here that know WHY that concert happened in the first place.

Actually, Mazarati had played a show the week BEFORE Prince's birthday at a small venue here called St. Andrew's Hall. Being a full on insane Prince fan at that time, i bought ANYTHING that came out on Paisley Park (because at that point he hadn't gotten completely nuts with it yet) and was a HUGE Mazarati fan. So me and my best friend at the time went to the show, and Mazarati KILLED. I mean everyone there knew the words to every song, they ended up doing 2 encores, and when they'd played every one of their songs, they just started doing Prince covers (i remember them launching into a bad ass cover of "Head"). Anyhoo. I digress. After the show, we all are shuffled outside and who sticks his head out from the upstairs window? Yep. Prince. He'd been backstage the whole night, and saw the crowd, felt the energy, and 2 days after that he announced he was playing a concert in Detroit for his birthday. The Red Wings were in the playoffs that year, and Joe Louis Arena wasn't available so it ended up at Cobo, and as they say the rest in history.

Listening to Prince changed who I am as a person. It certainly affected my sexuality. How could it not? Being a teenager and listening to Prince in the 80's, I certainly wanted to get first hand knowledge of what this guy was talking about!!! We all did. I remember bringing girls over to my house to hang out in my basement, and i'd put on "Do Me, Baby" and that was it. She'd be like "damn. alright...." lol

Prince made it alright to be different. To be edgy. It certainly affected my sense of style. NOT where i'd dress like he does, but it caused me to seek out and define my OWN personal style. To the point where now, people that know me see me wearing certain clothing items and say "you're the only person i know that could pull off wearing that." I got that from Prince.

I met my ex-fiancee (the one that got away) as a result of being a Prince fan. It was the thing that brought us together.

So you see, it goes much MUCH deeper than just being a fan of some guy's music.

NOW, with that said. I went through all of that to get to THIS.

I stayed on the "Prince train" for a LONG time. To be honest i don't think i ever thought i'd get off. (pardon the pun) I pretty much thought he was flawless from day one (For You) right up through the symbol record. Bought every album, single, 12", etc. (yeah, i've got the Sexy Dancer 12" AND the God Instrumental AND the Little Red Corvette 12" among others)

The Gold Experience was the first time for me where I didn't love a Prince record front to back. It sounded over-produced and the lyrics were corny. "Dolphin?" "really?" I gave him a pass, but it felt strange. I mean that had never happened before. I wasn't in love with a Prince record. But then The Hits came out, and i loved the new songs and i chalked it up to be an abberation.

I like Come for the most part. But then I hated "Space". So i'd skip that track. Again, that was different. I never skipped tracks on a Prince cd and now i had TWO. I was probably one of the few that really liked Chaos and Disorder but even with my friends that were Prince fans, we'd argue about it.

Emancipation. I liked discs 1 and 3 but hated 2. You're getting my point. After living through the BEST of times with Prince, i was starting to see the worst of times coming. I tried to fight it. New Power Soul made it hard. What GARBAGE. But then he'd release Exodus, and i'd be right back on the train.

Even live, which i'd been to every Prince concert in Detroit since what, 1982? But the Emancipation tour was shocking. I'd seen him twice in two different cities, because my ex-fiancee had moved to Chicago and we were still seeing each other, so i saw him again at the United Center. Like 6th row. And it was THE EXACT SAME SET THAT HE PLAYED IN DETROIT. Even the spots that were supposed to be "improvised", weren't. Mind blowing. I'd chalked that up to his crappy band choices at that point (Larry Graham and Kirk Johnson CANNOT anchor your rhythm section).

Again, i digress. So i think you're getting my point here. I've just about seen it all with Prince. By the time he'd released Rave, i'd jumped off the train. He was like a spoof of himself. He looked ridiculous, the album was HORRIBLE and here's my former trendsetter and groundbreaker doing duets with Sheryl Crow and Gwen Stefani? DONE.

Well, until he released The Rainbow Children. That was like a breath of fresh air for me. Yeah, lyrically it left a little to be desired but musically my man was back!!! For the first time in a LONG time, it sounded like he didn't care about making a hit, getting back on top, he just wanted to make a cool ass record. And it sounded like it. YAY!!!!!

Well that didn't last long. Musicology, I liked 3 tracks. 3121 i liked 2. Don't even get me started on Planet Earth.

So.

Why did i just lay my life out here for all to read?

Because here's my point. I guess some people never got off the train, and that's fine. Some of the proud kool-aid drinking kids want to pretend that it's still 1984 and everything that P does is still as magical as it was in those heady days. If that's what gets you out of bed in the morning, cool. Some of ya'll went and had the man's symbol tattooed on your bodies! For LIFE! wow. okay. Again, that's fine.

BUT don't, "feel superior" and look down your noses at those that don't think that everything that Prince does is great. Some of us have been at this for a LONG time, and have watched the man make some COLOSSAL mistakes.

I didn't feel sorry for the man with the Warner Brothers situation, because i'd seen how he's screwed himself in that deal. Warner rolled out the freaking red carpet to him and gave him the keys to the kingdom. Mostly because at the time he was trying to compete with Madonna and Janet Jackson BOTH of whom had just signed MASSIVE deals with their respective labels. So they made Prince a VP, gave him an office and gave him ANOTHER record label!!!! But they had to be smart and cover their asses. They put sales numbers in the contract. So instead of being a SMART label head (like Madonna who signed Alanis Morrisette and Me'Shell Ndegeocello to HER label), Prince treated his like a casting couch. DUDE, you signed CARMEN ELECTRA to a RECORDING CONTRACT. Yeah, YOU were a "slave" alright.

Graffiti Bridge. 'Nuff said.

So I don't think everything Prince does is great or even good.
I'm certainly not the "fan" i was some years ago.

I lurk (just like in here) and keep one eye and HOPE that at some point he'll sneak up and surprise me again, like with TRC. But i'm not planning on it.

For now i'll champion new artists that make me feel like i did back then, like Van Hunt and Amy Winehouse and to an extent Nikka Costa.

So there you go.

I guess i said all of that to say this.

Those of you that think Prince is still the "bees knees" shouldn't judge or look down on those of us that don't. Because some of us have paid our dues, been there since the beginning and have earned the right to speak out when we think Prince is being a dumb ass.

The whole YouTube thing? Dumb.

Jackie, you, this thread and you're writing are corny. You come off as a new fan who just learned of Prince's later work and went nuts. The "how many albums" question was appropiate because in other threads you've mentioned you just became a fan and had only a handful of releases. It was "on topic".

I think it's cute you find Prince so intriguing alongside Lindsay Lohan and Jesse McCartney. But I think it's a safe bet to say around here that shit don't fly.

It seems you need to start from the beginning and evolve with Prince's music like everybody else before you start sharing stories of how a 2004 release is so sentimental for you because it "was the first one" you "picked out".

As far as a carrer in writing?, read more.

I don't care if this comes across mean spirited or haterish. It needed to be said.

still holds true.

I mean "fan-er-ship"? That is neither cute, clever or whatever you going for. Oh well, idiocy must be one hell of a drug.

And if you intend to ask me why do I bother posting on your asinine threads, it's because I'm a member of this discussion board and I can. Learn about topics before you start posting your half-baked opinions on them.

I have a good time reading this thread... and then my bubble burst...

I'm so glad I got so many replies from you guys. Thanks so much.

Just wanted to clarify.
I officially became a supporter nearly 9 months ago.
And I own 17 albums (and have 2 more that I want to get b4 I stop for a while... and I'll start again when his next album comes out).

In the order I got 'em, I own:
Purple Rain, Musicology, TGE, 3121, Come, ATWIAD, Dirty Mind, Contorversy, 1999, Rave Un2, SOTT, prince, Planet Earth, The Black Album, Parade

and I plan on getting Emancipation (boy, this makes me sound like a broken record) and Lovesexy.

And ButterscotchPimp... can I just say that I think you're awesome? hug

And I thought I was the only person insane enough to write such long posts. I clapping applaud u. Ever with the huge diff. in age and "fan-er-ship" time (not my word by the way... someone else here made it up, I just forget who), seems like we have a few things in common. It might be a little late in the game for Prince to affect me quite as much. But I did get a taste of that going through albums that are just so different from each other (my first TGE experience bordered on scary, in complete honesty. Only certain songs like Gold and Dolphin were able to "rescue" me and had me coming back in a month to enjoy it). Let's just say I've experienced a condensed version of what you did your whole life.

And one more thing, I don't think everything Prince has done is great, haha. Why do you think I was so hard on 3121 for the longest time?

I got NewPower Soul because it was available, but I knew b4 listening by looking thru the album jacket. I've had my doubts about liking albums and why I bothered getting them, but not about Prince himself. He did what he ever felt like doing and I always say "go for what you believe in." Whatever he does just works best for him and I respect going him against the grain and always trying to do something new.

Not every album was a hit for me from the start, but after working with them, I made them work for me, even if I had to take a few songs out. I think Prince is close to perfect, but even he isn't. I try to see things from his viewpoint as far as his decisons go so I can understand why. There were a few instances when I couldn't understand, but I trusted that he knew what he was doing. Like the name change, I kinda understand why, but not completely sure.

I've got a lot to learn yet. The time spent being a supporter isn't the most important thing. Cuz I haven't been around as long as the rest of you have doesn't mean my opinions are worthless. I praise him to help make up for the negativity that surrounds him lately and because I think he is a star (sorry bout that pun). I'm a quick learner and have gotten around a lot in such a little time.

lol because I rant so much about "how great Prince is" all the time, people still seem to underestimate me. Well, some things can't be changed.

But "DreamyPopRoyalty's Loyalty to Prince" won't.

I don't question my fan-ship, because I have revoked it. I don't consider myself to be a fan anymore-all this wierd behavior has TOTALLY turned me off to Prince. I only listen to pre-2000 music of his. He is a certified nut-case, as far as I'm concerned.
I'll spend my money elswhere.

I never questioned it at all from 1978-1984. Back then, if was pouring down raining and Prince said it was sunny outside, I said it was sunny outside also.

On the musical side, Prince pissed me off beginning in 1985 but not enough to drop him completely. The late 80s were a series of "give him another chance" albums. He had changed his style and gotten all artsy/fartsy and I was pissed with each and every album during this period because I was waiting for him to snap out of it and go back to being his old self. If Shitney Houston had not come along and killed funk during this period, I'm sure someone else would have come along to replace him and I would have dropped him altogether.

On the personal side, I got pissed when I bought the book "Possessed" and read about his homophobic remarks about Wendy and Lisa. Then, I had to stand aside and take Prince for what he really is, which is a closet queen that hasn't fully accepted his own sexuality because of his religion. Looking at it that way, his homophobic remarks toward Wendy and Lisa sounded hilarious even coming from his lips.

OK.
His religion has only been around since 2000/2001, so there was decades of time (especially in the eighties) for him to come out. Prince is not a coward when it comes to things like that, and I truly feel that if he was gay, we would know it.

I recognize that you're gay, so I see why you might be saying that -wishful thinking- but seriously, he's simply not a homosexual. You come off as agressive over a topic that's speculative. Why are you bent on him being secretly gay?

Prince has always been heavy into religion even before he became a Jehovah's Witness.

Like they say, family can recognize other family when no one else can. Hell, even most straight people recognize what Prince is. Prince fans themselves are the only ones wearing blinders. Most Prince fans say that it was an act for shock value but most of us have seen his movies and agree that Prince is a horrible actor. That's why I find it so strange that he could act out his gay image so well from the look, all the way down to the gestures.

If he was gay, my world would still be intact. I am not one of those delusional fans that "blinds" their eyes from seeing bad Prince lol or that, as you say, he's gay. I am not at all that concerned with his personal life like others are (and that's fine if they are, whatever floats the boat).

When you said religion I'm sure I'm not the only one who thinks "JW". Thanks for clarifying that part, but I know plenty of people (who are not as open as Prince is) who come out regardless of their religion.

I see him as a very straight man, he's very masculine, yet in touch with his emotional (or feminine) side, and he is comfortable with who he is.

Apparently, some of you don't realize that Prince has done countless controversial things in order to gain publicity. His play on words and musical performances have been used as tactics to keep him as something to talk about. If you can't see that and you're a Prince fan, then someone's wearing those rosy sunglasses. whistle

OK. Now that you have revealed to me there is a certain way that gay people "act" I can now spot a gay person anywhere I go. lol

The truth is, just as there is a variety of heterosexual people out there, there are a variety of homosexuals out there. You being gay, I think that you would advocate this, but you're confirming the sterotypes of a man that acts (walks, talks, "gestures") more feminine than "most men" is gay. I'm not gay, and even I know that that's not true.

But to stay on topic, I'll just let the discussion rest. smile

Most of us have some sort of religion in our lives, including myself. However, religion could definately keep someone in the closet because I haven't seen one religion yet that accepts homosexuality. That scares the hell out of me to this day but I have to realize that men wrote the bible and not God. If the bible is right, then I hope God forgives me because I believe I truly cannot help or change what I am.

Prince has always seemed to be more into religion than most though. Not many folks were recording songs on a constant basis with references to God in them unless they were gospel singers. I can definately see religion holding Prince back.

There's a wide variety of how gay people look or act, that's why it's so hard to spot one out. That's also why straight people can't spot a gay person out as quick as another gay person could. It's our sixth sense or our gaydar. lol

Just a casual observation here, and not just to this topic, but to a lot of what is discussed on this site (but it certainly applies to the topic -along with the nonsense term fan-er-ship) but it appears that there is a LOT of blind devotion to Prince, a lot of "Prince can do no wrong" attitude, which is fine, but I think that blind devotion colors an honest opinion of what he does/doesn't do.
that's my honest opinion. I'm sure I'll get shot down by the "fams", but...have at it! I stand by my comments. eek

That's very true but you haven't seen blind devotion until you've seen some of those Michael Jackson fans. Some of them are real loony toons. lol

First of all...I have loved Prince since his forst album, For You. Then I fell in love with him when I first saw him on American Bandstand. I used to be a MJ/J5 fan.

I have supported Prince for almost 30 YEARS...and went nearly broke buying everything he and his associates have done. After the JOTY tour my "fanership" was questioned when I didnt get my tickets for a Prince contest I won from Paisley Park which is still today NEVER HONORED. But I forgave him and still supported him til now...my fanerhsip is being questioned again. I cant but my finger on it but all the crazy things going on with him lately has screwed my loyalty to him.

Either:
1. As he ages, his thinking of how he should be "remembered" of his image and music has changed. After 50, you dont think the same as you were 25.
2. He has been listening to lawyers who "overprotect" his interests and now we the fans are suffereing because we cant view, listen, download or share his videos, images and music anymore!! By controlling his product, he benefits but the fans dont. In the end, Prince is eliminating his "past" and wants us to rem him now for the now.
or
3. He dont give a crap about his fans and do what he wants to do.

Dont get me wrong tho. Whenever a Prince song comes on the radio, I blast the heck out it and sing as loud as I can. BUT....I question his latest motives with the HQ, Youtube and the Lets Go Crazy lawsuit. It sounds like "LAWYERS" to me.

Additionally, his music style has changed as well. I used to buy every album. The last album I bought was Musicology. 3121 and Planet Earth didnt appeal to me. The last 2 albums he created was not quality!! I wonder did re-used an old song and rehashed some lyrics just to put something out there for us??!! I aint biting. He can do better...I know he can. I hope he can.

So to answer the question....Do I question my fanership?
Yes, everyday since the day I heard his first song played on the radio.

Yes.

He's way more immature and dimwitted than I thought when I was trying to dicepher his album sleeve philosophies when I was a little kid.

I thought he was deep and free and thoughtful ...but good Lord. sometimes I feel like I stripped the veil from the Wizard of Oz and he's such a fake... the things that come out of his brain and mouth these days. Ugh! eek

I'm the kind of person ...who when in love with the art has to know the person behind it. That's what led me to this site in 1999 and let me to read interviews and collect his stuff (even bootls) decades before then.

But often the 'person' conflicts with the music. To be honest I question whether he even wrote my favorite stuff sometimes. It never seemed the work of a idiot.

I'll always be a fan of the music. But person, himself, disappoints more often than not in his behavior and spoken words. He's a true gemini for real. I don't know which side is going to speak: the one I love or the one I hate.
sad

Caution to kneejerk reaction readers: These are MY thoughts. It's OK if You disagree.

Dumb.

First - it's very hard to compare myself to a fan of only 9 months. I do welcome you to the Prince world, but I have been a fan for 25 years. Like you though, there was a long time where I played him every day, and his music became the soundtrack of my life.

Second, you write about "the worst of times". rolleyes You have no idea what the worst of times is as far as being a Prince fan goes. You are enjoying one of the most public Prince eras ever.

To answer your question: I would say that I am only now starting to question my "fan-er-ship" ... not because of the YouTube lawsuit or anything like that, but because of the decline of his quality of output.

Nothing in the world compares to Prince 1982-1988. Truly amazing.

I love him with all his imperfections!
Prince can be his own biggest enemy and his actions are questionable sometimes. He's the one who has to live with the consequences.
So what,we all have our issues.
love the one who is Love!
