Till this day we still laugh over the one story where this guy of the caucasion persuasion gets attacked by those little "slave" dolls that lived under the house. I won't go into what statement he makes when he tries to fight back, but it was hilarious to us! that little doll was UGLY lol

Okay, it's Prince's T.V. dad
When we first meet Ridley Scott's Frank Lucas (Denzel Washington) in 1969, he's a discreet driver and occasional hired gun for the old-school Harlem gangster Ellsworth "Bumpy" Johnson (Clarence Williams III). Bumpy dies of old age in Frank's arms, mumbling about his disdain for the newfangled chain stores that are taking over the neighborhood: "What right do they have cutting out the suppliers … buying direct from the manufacturer?" As the soft-spoken but merciless Frank takes over Bumpy's operation, that's exactly what he proceeds to do, eliminating the Mafia middleman and smuggling his dope direct from Vietnam in the coffins of dead soldiers. ----- [Edited 11/3/07 3:05am]

Factual innacuracy in the first scene though, in reality Bumpy died in a night club and not in an electrical store. Good movie though ----- [Edited 11/3/07 3:05am]

pacey68 said: Just been watching the new Denzel Washington movie "American Gangster". In the opening scenes there is an actor playing Bumpy Johnson. I couldn't quite place who he was and then I realized... it's Prince's "movie dad" Clarence Williams III (Francis L. in Purple Rain). Strangely enough I didn't notice his name in the movie credits. It's a great movie btw
Prince's mother, Olka Ka -----, is in 70's horror flick by Lucio Fulci called "Zombie."

First Mod Squad,
then Purple Rain & now American Gangster. Is it my imagination, or does "Prince's dad" seem to to take a 15-20 yr. break in between gigs? [Edited 11/3/07 13:29pm]

Oh man! I noticed that too! I remember shouting out, "look! it's Princes Dad from Purple Rain!" and my parents went shhh! Oh well I couldn't help myself! I love Clarence Williams III. He is a great underrated actor. He brought a real sense of conviction and sadness to Purple Rain. You could just tell that Francis L. was a man who was all washed up and bummed out about about the way his life turned out. He couldn't see the beauty of his family or the talent of his "Kid" anymore only the dissapointment of his unsucessful music career...Did you know CWIII was in the original Mod Squad TV show back in the late 60's? He was Lincoln "Link" Hayes! Bad Ass. He would have been a good Shaft! [Edited 12/8/07 17:17pm]

I love Clarence, but he scares the hell out of me! The way his eyes hardly ever blink, it's like he's always stoned on crack or something! There is something very unsettleing about Clarence. I don't know what that quality is, but some actors/actresses have it. I love Christopher Walken too, but he scares the hell out of me too! [Edited 12/8/07 17:13pm]

Great movie. Yeah Clarence Williams pretty much looks the same. He has played in several movies. One of his roles that made me laugh my ass off was when he played the devil in "Tales From The Hood"...wow... Life Is What You Make It...
