What do you consider to be Prince's best, most radical re-working of a song?

The 1988 Lovesexy version of Sister inspired this question.

It's funny all the same! I will say this, Days of Wild is a beast that the studio version never could give justice to!

lol

i'm sad to say i don't have that version anymore bawl
although i've listened to it so many times i can play
it note 4 note in my mind.

it goes on and on for 12 minutes or more and it ends
with a bass solo that's so insane it's shocking, even
for a prince live performance.

probably my fav ever live prince moment and i don't
have it anymore

bawl bawl bawl

My all time favorite re-worked song would be Something In The Water.
Not only is it one of my all time Prince songs or just my favorite song ever but the way he´s been changing it and rearranging it ever since it first came out is simply amazing, and he changes the mood , too.

For instance:
Something In The Water , album version...cold and electronic , hard synth funk, conveys a feeling of loneliness and desperation, especially with those screams towards the middle of the song.

Then there´s that other version that is circulating, with the piano line...also very haunting but not as cold, more warm and passionate. It was written around the time of his birthday but many think it´s a 1999 outtake but it´s not.

A year later he rearranged it and came up with that incredible Hendrix-like almost 15 minute long version, a version I can´t get enough on.Widely circulating and best known off of that infamous Neon Rendezvous 1984 rehearsal.

2002 : The celebration and ONA version, very laid back with a relaxed Carribbean feel.

2004: Musicology tour, acoustic version of Something In The Water.

2007: London O2, piano version ...melodically not that interesting but vocally interesting.
" I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

.....and of course it should´ve been " can´t get enough OF", not ON.

Typo.

Anyway, I also like how he´s changed the tempo everytime but the most amazing thing is that he changes the mood of the narrator with every incarnation of this gem and still comes across as very genuine and heartfelt. My favorite version is that mid 80s long rehearsal version that he also did during that Roadhouse Garden/Our Destiny ....warehouse rehearsal. Pretty much the same as the one on Neon Rendezvous.

Another cool , re-arranged song was 18 and Over, the live version he did in 1995, in March, at the Paradiso in Amsterdam. The song is kinda OK, so so, but he did an incredible, amazing live version with Morris playing some very soulful organ ( the melody of 18 and Over ) and Michael and Sonny playing a very relaxed beat/bassline and Prince playing very jazzy, funky guitar.....ahhhh...those were the days ( of wild ) ... lol
