Then why was it only played on Pop and R&B stations when it was released in 1984? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

electrorock said: daPrettyman said: Yeah! Why?! because prince is black U said it...I didn't. I wish I had sound on this board. I remember hearing a Rick James interview that described funk and pop music. He described pop music as something that has an uptempo beat that makes white people jump up and down off beat. He said that is what he was trying to achieve when he wrote Super Freak. If you think about it, most of PR is the same as Rick described. I would describe a "rock" album as Bon Jovi's New Jersey or Bruce Springsteen's Born To Run. As for Prince, I would consider Dirty Mind or Chaos and Disorder as being rock albums over PR. Now, if you say it is one of the greatest albums of the rock and roll era, I would say YES. The same could be said for Stevie's Songs In The Key of Life, but that doesn't mean these albums are "rock" albums. [Edited 10/30/07 9:18am] **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

Then One You Wanna See does not compare so that point is moot. PR does not fit into just the rock & roll category. As with all his albums he's mixing different genres and sounds so to me it's impossible to say this one is rock, this one r&b, that one is funk the other jazz... I always thought that if you're a Prince fan you're a fan of music and even if you have your prefernces you appreciate all categories. I couldn't agree more. Why should we put music into categories? We are all just music lovers.

I wouldn't call "Cloreen Bacon Skin" rock. It's raw funk. **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

Someone probably already mentioned this but anyway.....Prince's versatility has a lot to do with what makes him and Icon. R & B is within his soul, which comes out in whatever kind of music he does. If Prince was promoting himself as a Rock & Roll artist solely, then maybe this topic would apply, but it doesn't, and that's why we love him!

[Edited 10/30/07 3:33am] I'm guessing you're American. Either that or I haven't been to church for a very long time. Waffling moment. I'm very spiritual (think I understand what it means...at least to me) yet not religious. At least I follow no religion. Think it stems from 1) not delving into any particular religion, 2) not really wanting to put much faith into anything written by another person (their view may not be the words of a Higher Being so to speak) and 3) not knowing which one to choose (i think this would be an easy choice as it would have to fit in with my ideals of harmony). Are there lots of people out there like me? I instead flounder about in the dark of life grasping at what I think life is but really wishing I could be shown the truth. I reckon I would know it if I was shown it. In fact I think I do know it just don't know (or am scared?) either the question or where to look (how to unlock it perhaps?). Waffle over, back to packing the last part of my flat into a cardboard box. Sans porn. Nearly. Oh look! Flat into cardboard box! See the thingy-comparison there? Do we in fact live our lives living in a cardboard box? Are some people more in need of windows than others? Somebody somewhere has probably done a bloody thesis on that question, the results of which probably helped as much as an icecream dildo.
