When Doves Cry... about that song...

What do you like about "When Doves Cry"?

I like the guitar intro (if that's what it's called) and then how it leads into that beat - it's pretty catchy! cool

Question is, what do YOU like about it? cool

Oh, there's a whole lot of things...

For one, it brings back a lot of emotions, remembering how absolutely radical the song was when it first came out, so bottomless and high-flying, and the video was something we hadn't seen before... Prince naked in a bathtub!!

smile It really seemed like a new world.

I like that the song fits the situation when I get out of the bath tub & begin crawling naked across the flower-littered floor.
Whenever I try doing that with any other songs like, oh, lets say, Little wonders by that one Matchbox 20 guy,
it just doesn't seem to have the proper effect.

The lyrics catch me. They are so perfectly written and delivered. More than that, the lyrics remind me of my family, maybe not to such a extreme degree, but it does.
It captures human emotions so well, its such a stripped down song, its like raw emotion. No frills and crap.

Hi! razz

Radical, definitely!

I like the lyrics too. It's so real and true. The chorus made me think about how I viewed the world, I mean, I saw the world this way.

How can you just leave me standing?
Alone in a world that's so cold
Maybe I'm just 2 demanding
Maybe I'm just like my father 2 bold
Maybe you're just like my mother
She's never satisfied
Why do we scream at each other
This is what it sounds like when doves cry.

The above lines were very stunningly used in a sequence of Baz Luhrmann's "Romeo+Juliet," sung by a choir boy with an angelic voice. Did you see it?

No, I'm not familiar with that. So the lyrics came from Romeo & Juliet, not Prince?

And sometime I'll send you the paper I wrote about the "When Doves Cry" sequence, if you like. It was for a Renaissance course. Am going to try to get that published too. smile

Its one of Prince's Greatest songs no doubt.

I Love the guitar intro its one of the best guitar intro's to any song period.

The whole track is amazing, pure musical pop genius creativity.

"Dig if you will the picture
Of you and I engaged in a kiss
The sweat of your body covers me
Can you my draling
Can you picture this?"

That right there had me hooked from the get. Not to mention that this song has one of the best grooves ever and one of the best drum arrangements.

actually i love the 80's beat & sound. all the synth..very nostalgic!
i can appreciate the artistry in the vid these days, but couldn't cope with it back in the day!
all tht steam & nakedness. crawling about on flowers & doves flapping about in the room made him seem a bit predatory...nobody knew wht doves sounded like when they were crying - it was all a bit depressing really neutral
however, just love 2 c a bit of nakedness espec when it concern prince, & i appreciate a bit of the predatory ambiance.

I like the fact that it has no bass line.
It makes the song very tight.

On the PR DVD, there is an interview with the PR-movie producer. He told Prince that he needed a song for one specific scene in the movie (don't remember what it was). The next day, prince had made two new songs, one of them was When Doves Cry.

I totally dig the story behind it... one of those classic moments that only Prince could pull off.
Producer: Prince, I'm doing a montage and I need another song for it. Include the themes from the movie, about your relationship with your dad, ur father and your mother
Prince: ok sure

[next morning]
Prince: I've got two songs for ya
Producer: I really like this one, what's it called?
Prince: When Doves Cry

Just blows me away. He wrote and recorded this all in one night with EVERYTHING... makes me wonder if he was up all night working on it. Wouldn't surprise me if that was the case. He's cool like that cool
then there's the bassline and him taking it out cuz it had a better vibe.

But the song as a whole... It's classic Prince, doesn't get much better. I love the layering of music and vocals. He uses dozens of different voices for himself and whenever he uses keyboards, its just amazing. [that's what sounds like when doves cry, literally]... and I dig all of the guitar from the starting notes to the guitar solo in the middle.

So many things... but the layering of instruments and his dozens of voices always gives me something new to check out whenever I listen to it. Listening to it, you see just what Prince is all about, the type of person/artist he is... it could very well be a reflection of the conflicts within his very soul (it's called "When Doves Cry" after all)
had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. It started raining, baby, the birds were gone

When Doves Cry was Prince and The Revolution at their finest. I loved EVERYTHING about it. It was simply a superbly done ,very well executed song, of which there aren't many that compare. Enh! shrug That's been posted one way or another a million times already!

What's clapping worthy here my dear wildgoldenhoney, are your efforts!!!! I sincerely hope they're truly appreciated! wink

Really? Hmmm...ok! shrug The Revolution is in the video for the song and that is a big part of what I really like about it, so that means they do still count, right? Even if Prince has reaped all the other rewards. confuse

Yes, of course they're in the video. But I was just talking about from a recording studio standpoint. When Doves Cry was Produced, Composed and Performed by Prince.

But yeah, The Revolution does were great in the video, and live aswell.
