one of the biggest myths

Keeping his good music for himself locked up in a vault and then releasing crap on albums that Britney Spears wouldn't touch.

See, that's imho one of the biggest myths created by the press and Prince himself!

'locked up in a vault', are you KIDDING me? And all that stuff like 'he could release another album as succesful as Purple Rain if he wanted to, let's say tomorrow'? Are you telling me that he doesn't like success and fame?! That he doesn't want to release his 'hidden masterpieces' and he's keeping a lot of good music away from us?

I don't believe it, it was part of the hype all these years but let's face it, if there is a vault, it's filled with try-outs and demo's and -don't get me wrong- some very good songs and decent jams BUT NOT really the inspiration for 'the next black music masterpiece' or 'progressive pop album that will set new standards', right? wink

The vault is not a myth, it exists, of course there are plenty of unreleased songs, outtakes, demos etc but the question is, 'does it really contain anything Prince wants to put out there in the public domain?' I don't think so, it remains primarily for his his personal use until he wants us to hear something finalised; much to the annoynace of those that hold copies of original versions of We Can Funk, Joy in Repition etc and then hear the final versions suffer from overproduction.

I agree he has released exactly what he wants out there officially, as he wanted to. Some minor exceptions, for example the Black Album, Chaos & Disorder etc he didn't want released but he forced his hand in the WB struggle.

Everything else in the infamous vault, as good as we might be made to believe or actually is, is not what Prince thinks cuts it for some reason or another. Sometimes, I feel Prince partially bows down to our pressure though; I don't think Prince was wholeheartedly behind the Crystal Ball release, or he probably lost interest at some point. It was nevertheless a great means of getting out some gems that fans always wanted to hear, Days Of Wild for example.

Eye actually believe its some form of a vault.. kindof like he has a stash of songs, but most are just ave. songs.. nothing special, eye have OOPLES and DOOPLES of his bootlegs, and most of the studio stuff isnt that great, even if he remade it, not much can help some.. but there are a few that are worthy, but nothing 2 bring him back

Open Book is a really good one.. why didnt he release this himself? why give 2 another artist.

These Myths are Not always true and also Usually BodyBuilders all muscles and all Usually have small Dicks. Big Overgrown Assholes Usually with Big Heads but Small Dicks. I wanna see Body Builders with Large Dicks . Does it Exist except in Gay Men?

What you quoted didn't say anything about sales, in essence all the quote says anything about is good music. Good music does not always equate to big record sales.
This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

I think there is a Vault and I don't think it's definitely of less quality than what's being released.

Probably, there's a filtering process that has more to do with usability than quality.

Prince himself has said that sometimes songs stay on the shelves for a long time, before they find a place on an album where they contribute to the whole of it.

And there's always a filter deciding what the public will hear. Prince will be worrying about his audience understanding and believing him and record companies will be worrying about power and money.

I think that 'The Vault', as it was released by Warner Brothers, illustrates this. All the songs are individually of outstanding quality, but it's not an album as Prince would make it. It's out of balance and there's no spiritual concept behind it. It's not 'one'.

Anyone who went to Paisley Park for the first Celebration knows that there is indeed a vault. It looks like a bank vault. Big steel round door on it.

What's in it? They weren't showing us that.

Could be Jesse Johnson in there...

We don't know what is in there. Hence the concept of having a vault in the first place.
I'm an org elitist... totally unapproachable.

Maybe he had a big model door made and then just stuck it to the wall! Then we can all look at it and go, "OOOH LOOK, THE VAULT!!". Meanwhile Prince stands out of view, sniggering.
RIP sad

hmm Really, I *do* think so...

But I also believe there's a real heap of great unreleased material somewhere even if it's only in his head.

One of the biggest myths is that Prince actually has fans that care about what is being played now.

Instead we have people speculating that he is holding out with "the good stuff" or he has another "Purple Rain" in this "vault".

Do you think it's a Vault? Maybe it's a tape back-up or a cd holder with every pocket filled.

Really though, who gives a rats ass what the man has.

Every creative person (and some not-so-creative) have work-in-progress going on. Wether it's a notebook with lyrics, a beat, chord progression or just a song that they hum to themselves.

Is this what you want? Unfinished thoughts and partial ideas that didn't make the cut.

Why don't all of you who actually think he has a vault just go through his garbage on trash day and be done with it?

I don't know what Prince has in that vault, or his shoebox under his bed. I do know one thing though...if Prince does not release it in his lifetime-as he envisions it to be finished-someone will, after he has gone "boots up".

Look at the most recent box set from Jimi, "The Jimi Hendrix Experience". Perfect example of what can go wrong with an artist's legacy after they're gone. Eddie Kramer royaly destroyed most of the songs on that box set. He tweaked where it need not be tweaked. Who was helping him engineer this disaster? Not Jimi.

Prince needs to release all circulating studio boots. These songs are for the most part, in final demo form. This would lead one to think that he considered them worthy enough to put studio time into.

These songs will be up-for-grabs by his surviving estate.

Look what Jimi's estate did to his music.
If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

I've been recording songs for 18 years. Even I've got a vault (files, tapes of unreleased songs). I'm positive a seriously more accomplished artist such as Prince has a similar vault.

So, no, I don't think it's a myth, because I know how easy it is to amass a backlog of music.
