A more fitting question would be: When wasn't Planet Earth "dead" ?

This utterly embarrassing album deserves a quick death and if there is any life left in it, it is being provided by acolytes who would bow before any pap that Prince produced.

Where are the morons who tried to proclaim such tripe as "Future Baby Mama" as being on par with Do Me Baby and International Lover?

Let's face it -- Prince is, as a live performer, virtually unequalled, but in the studio, a lackluster, cliched and mundane artist.

But make no mistake, when the next Prince studio album is released, the same rehearsed rhetoric will make an appearance and the easily swayed will tell you that his by the numbers music is as good, if not better, than anything he did when he was actually relevant -- 1980 - 1987. Until then, Prince, play your hits and release live albums... it's all you have going for you.

i think Planet Earth is an Awesome Album. So, i have a question and i ask it respectfully. What would u have done differently BINNED ALL THE SONGS AND RE-WROTE THE RECORDS COMPLETELY and i direct this question to those of u who say its decent or criticize it unfairly I BELEIVE ALL CRITICISM OF THIS RECORD IS FAIR, in my opinion. i think its a collection of Brilliant and Awesome Musical Compostitons MORE LIKE BELOW AVERAGE, MEDIOCRE, with lyrics that evoke intelligent thought ARE YOU 12 YEARS OLD??. It' could not have been played in a different chord or time. It's Awesome the way it is. And the Lyrics tell us something. ARE YOU SERIOUS?? i am always Listening to Prince because he is intelligent and composes intelligent music and always has something important to say. I AGREE WITH YOU, THATS WHY THIS RECORD IS SO DISAPPOINTING i wouldn't change a thing! smile

Dead before born.

He put no effort into making PE. so I beleive he wouldnt put any into promoting it.. He is only promoting "peripheral" things, like conecerts, perfume, clothes. etc. The record.. well its crap and he knows it.

Alltough i consider "Planet Earth" as a decent Prince album (not great, not bad either) i more and more get the idea he did just released it just to let the people know he is still 'alive', and still making music.

As if he needed to release the album to keep some 'continuity' in his career AND to promote the concerts in London. And to make some money from his deal with the newspaper and the concerts of course wink

The strange thing is in the past i mostly had the feeling Prince did wanted to score commercially with an album (Prince, Purple Rain, Diamonds and Pearls) or explore his artistic horizons (ATWIAD, Parade, Lovesexy) or both (Symbol).

But with this album it almost seems like he feels fine with the modest sales. He is not pushing it like some creative effort to be proud of, or something.
He also doesnt seem to force himself to make it a megaseller.

Its all a bit lacklustre.

I think many still knew he was alive. Prior to the album, He did the Super Bowl and Vegas was dripping with Prince.

I think he's fine with the modest sales because over 3 million people got the album in the Paper and he was paid more on that deal than he would have gotten if he sold it the regular route.

Many of us have issue with some of the lyrics on the album. They seem trite and pedantic. Songs like Guitar, The One U Wanna C and Lion of Judah really leave a lot to be desired in the lyric dept. Not saying that they are all bad lyrically, but we have seen better.

Yes, and it deserved to die! It's not that it's a bad album, but you can't sell CDs on a seemingly unsuccesful product tie in alone. Prince, it's all about Apple! How about I-phone instead of Verizon!

What is this UK shit? Is that his new home? Seems like the only time he plays in the US, it's in LA for pampered celebrities.

Well videos are filmed, but aren't they always.

Prince clearly doesn't have any interest in playing the game the same way, say, Madonna does - where the promo is like a military operation - this chat show, that TV performance, those award shows, this single, that video, that single, this video, live show, TV broadcast of live show, live DVD, etc, etc, etc.

Prince just isn't playing by the same rules. We can see it as a wasted opportunity (we don't get those videos, TV performances, remixes, etc) -- But honestly, I kind of don't really mind -- Seems like Prince has always done things on his terms and rarely made the best of what he's had to offer in terms of promotion and marketing, right back to the 80s where albums weren't pushed with the right singles, or given room to fully achieve their commercial potential - It's Prince's way. smile

I agree. He already made his money from Planet Earth, the fans have it and that's that. If you look at the high cost in shooting videos and all this promo stuff, in the end what does it all matter. Things have changed.

what? Musicology USA Tour 2004, Tamar/Prince shows 2006, 3121 Vegas 2006/2007, and LA 2007 Minneapolis 2007. Where do you get only celebrity shows in LA?

"Musicology" was a proper tour and cheers for that but to point out the Vegas and LA 2007...wonder what audience he is reaching there?

Prince seems to be more interested in playing in safe places (including the UK) than going to the people that supported him. You would think he would tour for every album...I don't know. Eva Lonogoria awaits....

i don't know what you mean by "safe" places, but I went to 3121 Vegas three times and the majority of folks I saw there were fans most of who I recognized at other shows. You are making it seem like it was a celebrity event and it was not. Maybe the 3121 LA show, all three of them were but not 3121 Vegas based on my experience.

I do realize the resident concert setup is not going to please everyone.

I am currently kind of upset with prince

I loved the concert and everything here in Minneapolis, but I havent Seen a video..I havent had a b-side, nothing since he left the cities and a small 30 second clip of Guitar for Verizon sad

It's like....is he even promoting his stuff? Y should I care anymore if I feel he doesnt?

I know he's doing his thang in UK...now resting...but man....I would like a video, a remix, a new track..something to keep me bumping it.

Prince where u at? I GOT's MONEY I WANNA SPEND ON YOU!!!

I'm glad we all agree on that statement at least. Just seems to be I hear about Prince playing the after party of this awards show or that one (granted, sometimes he is a part of them for a nomination but not always). He doesn't seem to be down with the people (the question arises, was he ever?) and it just makes me cringe that I only hear about him in the media playing for Lindsy Lohan and some other losers...not going on tour! I suppose that he can reach a lot of different people in Vegas, but you have to admit it's certiantly an audience with even more expandable income than those that can afford a concert ticket in their own town....Just do another tour Prince. Come on, already!

personally i think prince's lyrics are getting worse and worse. for an artist
of his stature with such deep profound thoughts he sure manages to put some
of the most trite lyrics on his albums.

he used to have some very good lyrics in the past but his style of writing is
getting more and more up front and shallow, repetivive even and in the worst
cases, out of touch.

furthermore he utilises great techniques and sounds in his live shows and he
plays guitar that makes you want to wet the floor but somehow fails to do it
on his albums. it's there, but only 5% of what he brings to the table live.
and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

if you are dissapointed that he has not toured across the country enough since Musicology I understand, I'm sure we would all love that, but you keep reverting back to the argument that all he does is party with celebrities. First of all, what he does with his own time is none of our business since he is a grown man and can do what he wants, its really not your call to say, he doesn't spend enough time with his fans therefore he can't spend it with no one else. That just seems silly. Secondly I think this should be an argument about traditional touring vs. resident touring. Touring in itself can be brutal and I'm sure there are advantages and disadvantages from the artist perspective and the fans perspective.

If you call these gigs his personal, life, fine. It certainly has been affecting his work, though. I think he has got out of Hollywood and/or Vegas (or it's scene, anyway) the work ethic and his recordings would improve. He doesn't have anything to prove, but frankly, this is a said way to go if he wants to spend the rest of his life this way.

but lets be honest CD's are put out now adays to remind people who you are so they will go to your Live Concert.

Money in the music industry is in Touring, Thats why Prince gave his albu away for free through the UK newspaper.
