Is Planet Earth dead? From a promotion standpoint, does everyone believe that PE has run its course? I know the video for "Somewhere Here on Earth" was filmed but it doesn't look like anyone in Urban AC has added it. Also, my dream of seeing "The 1 U Wanna C" make even a small splash on any format appears to be unlikely. Would a few Grammy noms spark life into this bad boy or is "Planet Earth" over? All good things they say never last...

And before this turns into one of "those" threads (like my apparent controversial and now locked "Does Prince Have ADD" thread) I don't mean artistically. Those that love PE will continue to bump it for years to come, just as some still bump "The Rainbow Children" or (God knows why) "Chaos and Disorder". I am talking strictly from a marketing standpoint, which I realize only matters to some of us fans and not to all. Is Prince going to do anything else with this project I wonder or has he completely moved on? All good things they say never last...

Well videos are filmed, but aren't they always.
Prince clearly doesn't have any interest in playing the game the same way, say, Madonna does - where the promo is like a military operation - this chat show, that TV performance, those award shows, this single, that video, that single, this video, live show, TV broadcast of live show, live DVD, etc, etc, etc. Prince just isn't playing by the same rules. We can see it as a wasted opportunity (we don't get those videos, TV performances, remixes, etc) -- But honestly, I kind of don't really mind -- Seems like Prince has always done things on his terms and rarely made the best of what he's had to offer in terms of promotion and marketing, right back to the 80s where albums weren't pushed with the right singles, or given room to fully achieve their commercial potential - It's Prince's way.

If you strung all the video tape out from all the videos that Prince has filmed and never released how many times would it circle the Earth? All good things they say never last...

I agree with you. Planet Earth is not dead to me...I love the album and can and will play it anytime I want. In the end it's the music that matters and I am greateful I have a copy! Would I love to see Prince do his thing on TV, watch and buy new videos/dvd's??? Heck YES! But I am happy that he still releases new and incredible music almost every year! NPG! Dad. Cartoonist. It looks like Prince is done promoting it.
Actually, I think it's the other way around. Planet Earth is done promoting Prince's concerts. I think the business model these days for artists like Prince drives them to touring to make the big $$$. CD releases are merely devices meant to pique interest and get you to the show.

Prince isn't interested in selling records...he's interested in making them. (What interview was it where he said he's never "sold" a record in his life?)
If PE is dead for him (in the respect that he's moved on to something else), I'm content to let it be dead on my part. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I think the only promotion P was going to do was
Offer it in the paper Do the Verizon thing Do the Perfume Launch/7-7-07 21 Nights in London that's it. there will be a fasion line launch on Sunday. IMO, I wasn't expecting any videos or singles...let alone anything extended. Christian Zombie Vampires

So are you all saying there is no chance that he'll release a maxi-single of the title track with a pseudo-political, yet slightly naughty remix version called "George W. the Planet Grinder".
Damn. All good things they say never last...

I actually thought that his promotion of 3121 was almost non existent during certain months. I think Anx even posted a thread titled "Is Prince aware that he has a new album out?" Of course he did 20 shows in London straight off, and that's got to be grueling for the schedule. I'd like to think he's in the studio working on something new as his primary objective now

I think 3121 stuck around a bit because there was sort of a "Concept" behind it as well as Columbia gunning for promotion. I wouldn't hold your breath for any spec ed of PE. As I said in my post above the last time he did anything really special was for Rave. Oh and a couple of Picture Discs for Black Sweat and Fury. His videos have been just that videos. Nothing special except for Te AMo COrozon. The rest have been performance/stage videos. I kinda agree with Nouveau, Prince simply isn't interested in doing regular promotion even though it would make him more money (which he seems to love). I do hope that the download store comes back up. I did like getting music through that forum. Christian Zombie Vampires

Alltough i consider "Planet Earth" as a decent Prince album (not great, not bad either) i more and more get the idea he did just released it just to let the people know he is still 'alive', and still making music.
As if he needed to release the album to keep some 'continuity' in his career AND to promote the concerts in London. And to make some money from his deal with the newspaper and the concerts of course The strange thing is in the past i mostly had the feeling Prince did wanted to score commercially with an album (Prince, Purple Rain, Diamonds and Pearls) or explore his artistic horizons (ATWIAD, Parade, Lovesexy) or both (Symbol). But with this album it almost seems like he feels fine with the modest sales. He is not pushing it like some creative effort to be proud of, or something. He also doesnt seem to force himself to make it a megaseller. Its all a bit lacklustre.

I remember back in the day Prince would release a song to radio and a video to MTV. Then the following Tuesday release a single. The tuesday after that there would be a maxi-single and the third tuesday the CD would come out. There would be a performance on Arsenio or MTV awards...When he wants a CD to be "HOT" he promotes it. He really hasn't had a CD on fire since D&P but he pumped Emancipation (single problems and expensive) and Musicology. They didn't sell great on their own but P did what he could. I can always tell how a CD is going to do or how long it is going to be around because Prince really wan't pumpin' PE...He pumped his perfume but not the CD. 3121 did alright but he really didn't pump that CD...it sold good based off the Musicology hype (tour, RRHOF, good CD etc.). Other than the video/single for Guitar there really hasn't been any promo for the album has there?
Maybe if Prince was in the US for it's release, it might've got a bit more of a push there - but seeing as he was in the UK following it's release, and the album wasn't in stores here, there wasn't much promotion to be done!

I stopped listening to it, but it's not dead. I'll probably put the tunes on my iPod now and then. And with the vids that's he's directing, maybe it'll have a resurgence. But I don't think that even Prince had it in mind that this would be a lasting album. I don't think he makes albums that way.

i think Planet Earth is an Awesome Album. So, i have a question and i ask it respectfully. What would u have done differently and i direct this question to those of u who say its decent or criticize it unfairly, in my opinion. i think its a collection of Brilliant and Awesome Musical Compostitons, with lyrics that evoke intelligent thought. It' could not have been played in a different chord or time. It's Awesome the way it is. And the Lyrics tell us something. i am always Listening to Prince because he is intelligent and composes intelligent music and always has something important to say. i wouldn't change a thing!
