I was thinking the same thing.

And I LOVE this acoustic version.

What kind of message? hmmm

i think it's a joint message to us (the fans) and himself...

Stop telling me what U want me 2 hear
Stop telling me what U want me 2 fear
Stop trippin' on something U overheard
Love is winning without a word
Stop giving me Ur "wish list"
Love is free from all this

...in light of the earlier request on the thread about a webcam request (and the orger his/herself said "wish list"), i could see this as a "leave me alone and let me do me" type of line..

...Love is not a game U can play on the floor
U gotta stop keepin' score
If U wanna, If U want 2 play me like U did b4
U better stop and walk out the door
U can skate around the issue if U like
But who's gonna get U high in the middle of the night?

...same deal..."talk all you want, but i'll always handle my biz providing you music so ease up"....

...Smiling at my friends when U really hate 'em
Trying 2 convince me that eye should 2...

what's the point?

Stop worryin' about what people say
When it ain't gonna stop them anyway

Love can do anything if U try
Come on... Spread Ur wings... Let's fly, fly so high...

...the "smiling at my friends" line, sounds like what the fans do to every girlfriend he has....and the "stop worrying when it won't stop them" line, sounds like a re-afirmation to himself...and elsewhere in the song (i now remember, and don't feel like qouting) he talks about "if your gonna play me like you did before"...

being more serious about his spirituality these days, i'd imagine prince views his "morally-sketchy" past as him turning himself out for the adoration of his fans...not that i think he'd think it's all our fault, but religious people are taught that certain crowds can draw you in and change you when your a spiritually vulnerable person and at any point afterwards they can make you backslide...and many of us DO still lust for his previous ways, so i'd say he's right to act the way he does in response to us (in certain situations)...but all of this is my opinion of course... i wouldn't be surprised tho...hope this made sense

Could it be any more obvious that the "wish list" was called a "wish list" because it was intentional and in fun? Some people take this all way too literally/seriously.

And for the record, not too many here "smile at his friends when they really hate them". When they don't like someone, they usually make it pretty clear.

As for the last part. There's possibly some validity there.

And how about Larry Graham? You know people here won't stop insulting him, often in the most disrespectful terms... Of course Prince knows about it. They won't boo him when they're onstage together.

Yet one more thing I don't understand. It literally doesn't get any more funky than Larry Graham. That "dueling bass" intro he and Prince did on the "Rave Un2 The Year 2000" DVD to "Kiss" was mind-blowing! Didn't know two basses could be played together until I heard it from Larry and Baby Brother.

It is a great version of Love. The sad thing is that some people can't enjoy it without wishing it was on this album or that.
Just enjoy the genius of Prince and be glad that this truly unique man is not shackled by the mainstream media.

biggrin I can't stop listening, I will to "LOVE (Acoustic)" all day today. biggrin
God doesn't just tells me how much he "LOVE's" me, God shows me how much he "LOVE's" me. Both telling and showing "LOVE" means to "LOVE". They go hand in hand. You can't have one with out the other. Something is spoken, then followed by an action. That is

i do recognize this....but i'd imagine the theme's that i pointed out as possible lyric meanings (which again were merely assumptions i made in response to someone who asked a question about messages in "love") ...would have been reoccuring themes in the life of any one who had become a famous as prince was/is:

-people saying "this way, that way"
-people saying "you don't need them, stay away from them"
-people saying "they would really love you if you did this more"

and besides...i'ma lyricist by profession so ALL lyrics are serious business to me, whether they were intended to be taken as such or not. you may disagree but I was born believing words written on paper are NEVER just that...

i would also prefer a live version

just him, a mic and a guitar in the studio

it sounds like he spent a while making this track perfect and adding layers to it

but it is still nice

"bounce it baby.....shake that thing c'mon".....

I'm wondering if this was recorded in the same sessions as the rest of the 3121 album (rather than recently), and perhaps wasn't simply considered an acoustic version, but potentially a finished song, with the album dance version being a later version. It sounds 'complete' instead of stripped-down, if that makes sense.

Anyone else have thoughts on this?

I wasn't slighted, at all. It made me giggle because you got it so wrong. And it's only a relevant example of having fun. Nothing more. How you don't see that is kind of surprising, especially since you say you're a lyricist.

It's o.k. to appreciate the power of words, but you really shouldn't take them so literally. You lose the fun of it all, in doing that.
