I heard it was based on a crop circle type pattern he found on a slice of toast he had. much like the whole black album/lovesexy incident.
It's a mess, ain't it, sheriff?
If it ain't, it'll do till the mess gets here

I guess you mean, the difference between the short cross, and the horn.
I like them both.

I think it has a bit to do with alchemy and perfection, hence the addition of the soapstone symbol. A lot of his imagery and some of his lyrics dealt with transformation and change back then, like that digging for gold analogy mentioned by music critic Jim(?) Walsh in the liner notes of The Gold Experience.

You know, in the middle ages, alchemists believed that you needed soapstone in order to create gold, hence the soapstone symbol. He also said during the 1995 Gold/Ultimate Live Experience tour " This song is about the ingredients changing right in front of your eyes...!" before he started singing the song Gold.He also said it during the Japanese leg of the tour.

The horn part of the soapstone symbol could also hint at the horns of Armageddon or the apocalypse, which also has been a reoccuring theme in Prince´s body of work.
The 80s symbol stood for love, oneness, unity, man and woman, love of God(?) transcending the sexual and gender roles etc. but the new version of the symbol goes a few steps further.
In a strange way, it all kind of worked out for him and is indeed a good representation of what he is about and what he stands for, at least as an artist and businessman.

I might come back to this a bit later, too tired right now.
