He would have kinda looked like an asshole if he didn't. Everyone else was standing & clapping. I think people were clapping for the message of the song rather than the performance. The performance was kind of lame, IMO. But it's a great song and a wonderful message, nonetheless. I remember my dad's Alcoholics Anonymous group had adopted it as their theme song.

Interesting - what evidence exactly that he loves MJ? Is this from direct quotes, or an observation based on his musical tastes or otherwise? And how does this fit in with Will.I.Am's (or however you spell his name) comment that Prince played bass in MJ's face earlier this year, at one of Prince's gigs?

As a fan of both MJ and Prince, I have always wondered what their true thoughts are of the other, and indeed, whether they are actually in contact with each other in any way. Two real musical icons.

he clapped cuz he knew he was being caught by the camera. he looked so tiny and had a gay clap.

MJ lipsynched after TTD performed LIVE with his band "If you let me stay"

LOVE Prince, LOVE MJ, LOVE TTD, so I'm completely unbiased here:

TTD's performance was rubbish that night. It's in the wrong key. He's throaty and just totally out of his range.

MJ was on point when he was singing live, but it was far too obvious when he made the switch in the middle of the song. I don't see why he lip synced at all because when he went live it was great.

Prince is on camera there for about half a second standing up in a crowd of everyone else standing up and applauding. How anyone can decipher if he enjoyed the performance or not is grasping at straws.

TTD was rock'n roll u no...
MJ was the one that was rubbish. It was kinda insulting to lip synch in such a place in front of "everyone"

And given that Prince has blatantly cussed MJ ON RECORD twice (Fascination and Life O' the Party), as well as other reported jibes (The Bad/Pathetic album title joke, for example), I'd say that Prince has an egotistically biased opinion AGAINST MJ.

Well exactly. Any MJ "disses" from Prince in the past I've taken to be quite tongue in cheek. They've both been coaxed to speak about eachother and [when serious] I've just found them to be respectful. They're not great close friends and they don't hate eachother either. As a HUGE fan of both it really annoys me to find other fans (again, of both) trying to draw up this little rivalry.

Well, its nothing serious, really, is it??! eek I mean, this is the "entertainment business" we are talking about here, isn't it?

This "rivalry", real or not (and, in the minds of many fans, media and music critics it was real and, perhaps even valid, with both men being the biggest black pop stars of their time) has been capitalised on by both artists and consumed by the masses. But, despite the fact that alot of people get very emotional and caught up in these things, its really not supposed to be serious! As any sane person well knows, if they were ever at the same ceremony together, or something, there would be no war, or drama and there may be no pats on the back either...but there would be respect. All the bravado was and is exactly that and only served to enhance either artist's exposure.

I don't think Prince would play MJ songs onstage if he did not like and respect him. Same for Rick James. I seem to remember hearing that Prince visted MJ at the Jackson family home back in the 80's, too.

i'm just constantly amazed at the ongoing dialogue
about the two of them here. i, too, am a fan of both.

deep down, perhaps it is a compulsion within western society
to constantly compete. i think it could be easily stated
that neither MJ nor P have very many competitors or PEERS
(i like that word much better).

in other words, are we unconsciously trying over and over
to say one is more talented than the other?

could there be a musically friendly rivalry & respect simultaneously?
say similar to Picasso's relationship with Matisse?
both artists respected and affected each other.
it has been suggested that they created works "to each other"
in an ongoing friendly, respectful competitive dialogue.

i heard/read that Picasso respected Matisse as one of his only true peers.
