PurpleKnight said: The minimalism in Prince's version is what makes the song so great. It makes you focus on the most important part: the lyrics (which are really strong).
the lyrics are lame. its great the way he writes but what he says is lame.

Prefer Prince's version of course, but Chaka really does justice, both are cool in my book At this point in history, we have a choice to make

ummm... NOT!
Too much warbling... "THYYYYYME" sounds like she's singing about a spice rack! this versions blows, and not in the good way, in a chunks way. This song is next to impossible to cover and get it in any way right. THYYYYME... 'nuff said! A working class Hero is something to be ~ Lennon

Her version of I Feel For You is better. She should've left SOTT alone.

I haven't heard it,
but if it starts out with "ChakaChakaChakaChakaKhan...", then I would have to say "Yes. Yes it is." [Edited 10/15/07 17:50pm]

WOW Yeah, I don't get it either. It's like sitting at a Vegas style buffet, thinking to yourself: "I wish I had something to eat".

'nuff said! must say I agree...sorry Chaka love ya but this is not a very good cover The warbling is called soul I believe. Prince did a bit of it himself at the o2 from time to time The original is and always will be a classic, but I don't know how people can not 'get' the last minute of this version (i.e. the new 'hopeful' bit !). It's what makes it more an interpretation than a cover... and full of soul. There's plenty to eat

No No No No sorry
It was OK but No Did I say No? Started OK thought "maybe" but it just drifted off into a run of the mill durge. For those who've only heard a snippet I found a full free download at: http://64.71.55.130/chaka...etimes.mp3 Once you bypass any adds it's there. If not I'll put it somewhere and an orgnote may show you the way.

I hardly ever like covered versions better than the original ones. I love Prince and chocolate - in that order

OK, if that is "soul" then what I sing in the shower regularly rivals the best of Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye and Barry White because I sing "soul". Seriously, are you trying to say that the oo-ee-oo-oohh-iiiee-oooo-ee-oooh-aaah that Chaka bombards you with is "soul"? Really...?? Whats worse is it's not even a song she wrote, it's one she's covering. Man, she straight butchers SOTT and you call it "soul"? For real...??? Chakas version will be filed under "soul" when A working class Hero is something to be ~ Lennon

Unbelievable. Chake comes with the funk. Her voice is brassy with her diction until the 3:00 minute mark and she goes off with the Chaka wall of wails. The I'm Every Woman marriage at the end make sthe cover bonefied Chaka. Each is entitled to opinion's but these comments remind of a person that said Toni Morrison did not deserve her credit. Wow.

the album is awesome...blows Planet Earth to sh*t...and I actually love the song...its interesting how divisive this song is amongst the Music: Non-Prince forum which I think is a great thing...she took a risk.
Unlike anything Prince has done lately. Space for sale...

Chakas version will be filed under "soul" when Well, maybe not classic soul like the artists you mentioned, but soulful certainly... It's her version and she sings it with conviction, so it I suppose yes, it is sung 'soulfully'. The end section she's added certainly lifts the song in a soulful way. It's her cover and she adds something else interesting to the original song, so it's a worthwhile exercise as far as I'm concerned, not a 'butcher'... [Edited 10/20/07 14:06pm]
