Do you ever question your "fan-er-ship"?

I forget who came up with that word, but if he/she comes here, could you ID urself? Thanx

Its definiton is basically "being a supporter/admirer/listener/fan of Prince".

Have you ever questioned being a supporter of Prince?

I'm sure there are quite a few who are pissed about the whole YouTube/sueing fans thing that ask themselves why they bother with Prince with all the negative things he has done.

But I'll be brave and say here and now, after being a big supporter of Prince for almost 9 months, I have never questioned being what I am. I listen to him nearly every day and come here every chance I get. I write words of praise for him almost every day and rarely have anything negative to bring to the table (like dissing 3121 as I had in the past).

If there was ever a time for doubt, it would have been BEFORE I made the committment to make "fan-er-ship" official by coming here. For the longest time, I didn't give him a second thought or want to get to know the career he'd undergone because I knew that once I made the committment, there'd be no turning back.

And even through the worst of times (which came rarely as it is), I never doubted the way I feel about Prince and his music. And every day is a little better since I allowed him into my life and let his music take me places I never thought I'd see in my wildest dreams.

Now... what say u 2 that? wink

I question the word used because it just sounds like bad English, but do I question being a fan, no.

It's his material so he has a right to control it. Doesn't mean I approve, but he didn't ask me to.

Sometimes. But if you were to get one of those old fashion scales and put his good on one side and bad on the other, the good would outweigh the bad. Does that make the bad less bad or excusable? no. But its still outweighed. Brother would have to do alot of crap to overshadow all the good he has done.

First - it's very hard to compare myself to a fan of only 9 months. I do welcome you to the Prince world, but I have been a fan for 25 years. Like you though, there was a long time where I played him every day, and his music became the soundtrack of my life.

Second, you write about "the worst of times". rolleyes You have no idea what the worst of times is as far as being a Prince fan goes. You are enjoying one of the most public Prince eras ever.

To answer your question: I would say that I am only now starting to question my "fan-er-ship" ... not because of the YouTube lawsuit or anything like that, but because of the decline of his quality of output.

Nothing in the world compares to Prince 1982-1988. Truly amazing.

Great replies so far, guys clapping

Let me offer up something else up for discussion.

Another argument people use for people who are loyal to Prince through n' through (as I and clearly many of you are), is "why do you care so much about someone who hates his fans?"

I don't believe for a second that Prince hates his supporters. Even with his "cold" actions of selfishness and arrogance, I know deep down that he cares about his supporters very much. Without them/us, he wouldn't be in the place he's in now. So why wouldn't he care?

That's one of my truest beliefs.

Let the discussion continue cool

You's a mess... lol

In answer to dreamypop, what is there to question? Prince is a phnomenal musician, artist and entertainer. In my 25 years of following his career there's been lots to love about his music and the persona he projects not to mention the many memorable times I've had at his shows. Through his work he has said many profound things that touch me deeply, such is the ability of a true artist. He's also more fun than a barrel of monkeys at times.

There isn't a person on this earth that I agree with one hundred percent of the time and Prince is no exception. I have lots of opinions and observations about what's up with him but I usually choose not to comment mainly because I realize that I don't know Prince...I only know "of" him.

I've never been one to get too caught up in his various personas and incarnations although there was a time when the things he was saying matched my thoughts and feelings so exactly that they could have emerged from a single mind...then the wind shifted again. lol I ain't mad at my brotha...It's another one of his abilities.

So my answer is that maintaining your own personal integrity and staying a little detached will help you to avoid the pitfalls of "Princeyworld". nod

I'm not a blind devotee or anything but I do believe in positive reinforcement. Furthermore, isn't spending large amounts of time ranting at him wasted energy? I mean, if I have some feedback for Prince I'd rather tell him to his face and only IF he asked me.

Those few times when he is doing something I don't agree with, I have other things that I can do..,other interests. Consequently, when he has one of his moments it doesn't affect me to the point where I feel so angry or hurt by him.

Prince has a great many things that I love but he doesn't have anything that I "need", ya know? shrug

If you feel that he has helped you becoeme a better person I guess that's good but personally, I've never looked up to him in that way...perhaps because I'm almost as old as he is my perspective is a little different. I have immense respect for his talent but to me he's more like the fellas I grew up with than someone I place on a pedestal.

I'm still a huge fan of the music , and to be honest the person . When I see him in interviews his personality is always appealing and often humorous . His actions however are slightly annoying but thats his controlling nature coming out , and maybe if he wasnt a control freak he wouldnt be the same Prince who I like for all the other reasons , so I'll take the bad in small doses along with the overwhelmingly good I guess .

People often apply their love of an artist's work to the actual person, and that's a huge mistake.

The Prince, I guess you could call it, "character" you hear in his songs in no way matches the person you hear about in real life. So, I am not actually a fan of Prince Rogers Nelson at all. I think he has often proven to be a piece of garbage as a person, and I don't agree with his religious practices at all (to say the least).

That being said, I enjoy his music A LOT, and nothing he does in his every day life, which has little impact on me, (the YouTube situation just annoys me more than anything else) can change that.

I DO, however, think Prince has been utterly eclipsed in the studio by a whole slew of today's artists, including Radiohead and NIN. So, until he releases something new that is actually quality, I won't be quite as interested in him as I was a few years ago.

I agree with everything you just stated here. Although I'm not in his age group (nowhere near 50 lol) I don't put him on a pedestal or anything. I enjoy his musicianship and his persona (as far as it's displayed anyway, like you said I don't "know" him, just "of" him). I consider myself a casual fan (I'll be an enthusiast IF he comes to the US for a tour lol) although he's my top musician hands down, but describing myself as being hardcore or obsessed does not describe my "fan-er-ship" of him.
And to answer your question dreamypoproyalty, I don't question it, although my level of interest in his career may vary depending on his musical output, amongst other things.
