Prince Conversations

Growing up and listening to Prince music, has been an interesting journey. I was the dancer in my circle of friends.. Even receiving “Best Dancer” in High School
Award, which was again recognized at my ten year reunion.
I can definitely thank Prince music for carrying my spirit along….Along with all of the great groups that, “put out, their groove.” I can’t go on and on dedicating an entire record store, for the cause of naming all of the musicians that have helped me to grow as a person, for dancing and learning.
I would many times, pull a lyric out of a song and use that lyric, and the artist’s credit, to build a conversation, that would attempt to change someone’s life for the better. For example, I have had a few, very sincere conversations that have revolved around, “The Boss” by Diana Ross. For those readers, that in my book, are, “The Cool People.” Ya know, “I thought I had my degree, but Love taught me, who was The Boss.” Prince lyrics would come up occasionally, however that is not my point here.
My point is: Growing up, having conversations that included Prince, I would usually encounter an extreme difference of opinion. Prince was either thought of as an exceptional musician, or they would say something derogatory. I defended Prince in every verbal boxing match I encountered believe me, even amongst my friends that I would have to pre-occupy with conversation, so Prince music in the background could be slipped into their spirits underhandedly.
Rarely did I meet people in the gray that said, “Yeah, Prince is okay.” Except my x-husband. A guitar player, whose local band faded after 4 years or so.
I am curious as to what other fans lives, have been like, having Prince’s talent be an enjoyable conversation with someone that knew Prince music, or a battle with a, “lame brain..” In Our Book?
Do you have any “Prince Conversation memories?”

P.S. The Prince lyric I favored was, “The road you choose to walk in this life is the one that leads into the next.” T

Most of my friends growng up strongly disliked Prince and thought he was a freak.

But I was pretty influential with my friends so some would actually tolerate him just cause I loved him.

It's dificult to mix Prince in with Nine Inch Nales, Sisters of Mercy, Skinny Puppy, etc. etc. with friends who primarily only listenned to that type of music.

However I have converted at least 3 of my friends into life long Prince fans. One of them saw a performance of "Dolphin" on David Letterman and went out and bought the Gold Experience a while later when it was finally released. After that he bought a few of the great 80s albums, and finally ended up being a fan.



Funny thing is that as their fan status got more intense, my love affair with Prince dwindled somewhat.

I disagree with folks who think his last few albums are crap. They're really good albums. They're just not great Prince albums in my eyes. I've grown and moved on a bit. There will always be a place in my heart for his music, but I don't look to talk about him much anymore. Its even awkward talking to other orgers about him in real life, as most seem like bigger and better fans than me.

I can only Imagine, Imago...I had problems sqeezin him into heavy rockers, and techno rave geeks. I can dance around in spinning lights for about a song before I need music with some depth. Ecstasy to me is something else altogether different. haha. nevermind.

I didn't mean to get down on people that dance all night long to Techno music..
It's just to me, that sound has it's limits...It's a younger crowd of people than I am, that really just kind of express themselves differently through music. Not to mention, the dangerous influence of ecstasy drug use that has afflicted a certain population of teenagers. So I guess, I have had an easier time, introducing Prince music to hard rockers than this kind of techno crowd.

During the Purple Rain era it was easy to keep a conversation about Prince going. A lot of people thought that he was hot stuff back then.
Lately, when bringing up Prince and his music I get mostly a negative or no response.
That doesn't bother me; people have different tastes. If I want a conversation about Prince I come to the org.
