These are the setlists for all the shows I saw in London, it was the best summer ever!!!
PRINCE SUMMER 2007 August 11th No Support act. 20.45 - 22.43 (performance time approx 1 hr. 45 mins) Purple Rain Cream U Got The Look Shhh Musicology (Hey Funky London chant) Pass The Peas The JBs Play That Funky Music Wild Cherry incl Skin Tight - (Prince vocals) Wonderful World (Renato + Mike Phillips) - The Dance (Renato) Lolita Black Sweat Kiss I Feel For You Controversy / Housequake chant short break Lets go crazy If I was your girlfriend Nothing compares 2 U encore 1 Take Me With U Little red corvette solo Prince on electric guitar Raspberry Beret full band Sometimes It Snows In April solo Prince on electric guitar Synth set Alphabet street (with band - sang 1 verse) - DMSR (sample/sang 1 verse) - When Doves Cry (sang first line) - Erotic City (sample) – I Wanna Be Your Lover (sang opening line) - Nasty Girl (sample) - SOTT (sample) - Pop Life (sample) - Prince solo on piano The Beautiful Ones (sang one verse) - Diamonds and Pearls (sang opening line) - jam - Strange Relationship (sang one verse) Full band Do Me, Baby I Wanna Be Your Lover (outro) Sexy Dancer /Le Freak lyrics Chic (Shelby J. and Marva King share lead vocals) A Love Bizarre (instrumental with chorus chants) 3121.COM REVIEW A circular curtain lowers from the ceiling, center stage. The band plays the opening notes of Purple Rain. The curtain goes up, and there’s Prince, decked out in purple and orange, hidden amidst wafts of smoke. “Eye am here London… where r u?” That question was a good indication of how the rest of the night would go: full of surprises and plenty of playful nrg. By the time the band got 2 Musicology, he had them stop on the one b4 the verses began. “Don’t u play with me! U know it’s Saturday night!” he shouted 2 the crowd. He stopped and started the song midway THREE times 2 call out 2 the crowd. “U all ain’t ready 4 me! U used 2 computers and all that!” Drums and bass had their moments in the spotlight, with Prince pointing them out 2 emphasize what real music sounds like. The NPG SCHOOLED us 2night! Play That Funky Music featured THE funkiest breakdown this song has seen on ANY stage by ANY artist. Prince called 2 the band 2 break it down and even on a spontaneous note like that, the band stays tighter than a hair-metal band’s spandex. How do they do it? We must also mention the funky white boy dancing onstage 4 this numba.. those steps had us all smiling. Dancing man declined an oppor2nity 2 sing in the mic, but his enthusiasm made up 4 it. Prince was in a playful mood 2night.. during Controversy, he asked the hornz, “U all look sharp… can u play anything?” U know a group of horn players in shiny silver suits is going 2 BRING it, and that they did. The way Prince threw down his guitar pick after Let’s Go Crazy looked like an athlete’s endzone celebration. With some playing like that, well go ‘head now! Fast forward a bit… just when we all think we know where this groove machine is headed, Prince drives it 2 a whole ‘notha place. He walks over 2 the stage curl and sits at the keyboard. But this wasn’t like any other night we’ve ever seen at the keys.. instead, he’s teasing us with triggered samples from Lady Cab Driver, Nasty Girl, DMSR, Pop Life, When Doves Cry, Sign O’ The Times… even Erotic City! This set was so sick the thermometer broke. Several times Prince got up and started walking away, but the crowd’s cheers brought him back 4 more. He played and sang portions of The Beautiful Ones, Do Me, Baby, and even Strange Relationship! Lawd! We don’t even need 2 hear anything else after all that…. if this was a tape we’d put it on loop and break the deck’s knobs off. Prince pushed the piano stool over and headed back center stage 2 finish the night out on guitar with Take Me With U, Little Red Corvette, Raspberry Beret (with the band this time!) and Love Bizarre. We think we heard him say, “that oughtta hold ya!” And that was a (head)wrap. ’til next time… August 14th Support Act Beverly Knight - 19.45-? Main show - 21.02 - 22.50 (performance time approx 1 hr 42 minutes) 1999 Musicology Prince & The Band Cream UGTL Shhh Take Me With U Guitar Somewhere Here On Earth 7 Forever In My Life If I Was Your Girlfriend Black Sweat Kiss Purple Rain Alphabet Street (incl Hey Funky London chant) I Feel For You Controversy (incl Housequake chant) Let's Go Crazy 6 minute break encore 1 "Put all the house lights on for 5 minutes..." Crazy Gnarls Barkley (Shelby J. lead vocals) Nothing Compares 2 U 3121.COM REVIEW “Don’t worry, eye won’t hurt u, eye only want u 2 have some fun….”And so the fun began with the opening sample from 1999 leading the band in2 the ultimate party song, band and crowd feeding off the nrg on this one. The band even sang the “mommy… y does everybody have a bomb?” breakdown. Is this 4 real? Whew! The lighting 2nite was so on point.. maybe it’s just us, but we were really feeling it. The way the lights strobed on Cora during her SHHH solos, the sexy blue lights on Somewhere Here on Earth, and the purple-lit smoke during the end of Purple Rain complimented the set so nicely. Nice catch, guitar tech… After playing Guitar, Prince threw his guitar so high we almost lost view of it in the lights. Good thing the tech didn’t! During 7, Prince played a nice, bluesy riff 2 keep the jam going. He must’ve been feelin’ the mood 2nite becuz all the guitar playing SMOKED! The solo during SHHH was even better than during the last show, and he added some beautifully articulated riffs 2 the Purple Rain solo. Guitar students, go 2 one of the O2 shows 4 the best lessons u can get! Prince and the band even played 4ever in My Life.. how cool is that? Everyone sang along with Prince on the “la da da da da dadada” parts, and then he led them thru chants of “all right” later in the song. 2 classics added 2 the set in one night.. we can hardly wait 2 hear what’s next! The show closed with Nothing Compares 2 U, with Prince singing down on one knee. Afterwards, he said, “U’re making me feel 2 good 2nite, London… From the bottom of r hearts, all 21 nights we will give r all.” U make us feel good 2, Prince and the NPG. Thank u so much! August 18th Support Mya 20.00 - 20.35 Main show 21.26 - 22.52 (performance time 1 hr 23 minutes) 3121 Girls and boys 1999 Peach/Rock Me Baby BB King Shhh Cream U Got The Look Musicology (incl I Like Funky Music chants) synth set Sign O' the Times (1 verse) - Partyman (1 verse + 1 chorus) - Alphabet St (1 verse) - D.M.S.R (Maceo solo) - Erotic city (sample - Prince sings "All of my purple life") - Nasty Girl (sample) - Erotic City (sample) - When doves Cry (up to "the heat between me and you") - Head (sample with Morris playing a riff on keyboards) - Pop Life (1 verse + 1 chorus) Full band Raspberry Beret Sexy Dancer w/ Le Freak lyrics Chic I feel 4 U Controversy (incl Housequake chant) What A Wonderful World Louis Armstrong Purple Rain 5 minute break encore Kiss Let's Go Crazy (1 verse + 1 chorus medley ending) Aftershow IndigO2 1.05 - 2.30 (Prince on keyboard) Superstition Stevie Wonder Higher Ground Stevie Wonder A Love Bizarre Sweet Thing Chaka Khan (Marva King lead vocals) The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker Use Me Bill Withers (Prince on guitar) Stratus Billy Cobham Satisfied/The Rules Love Changes Mother's Finest (Shelby J. lead vocals, Mya's singers on backing vox) Baby Love Mother's Finest (Shelby J. lead vocals) Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin) Sly and the Family Stone Notes - Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin) turned into an extended jam including a guitar duel with Mya's guitarist - his amp was too low to hear so Prince handed him the Hohner to play to finish the set. 3121.COM REVIEW Prince was obviously eating up the nrg from the crowd during 1999 and waved them in2 an uproar, spurring them all 2 cheer louder. During SHHH, he said, “eye love u London.. but not like eye love this guitar!” The keyboard portion of the show is sicker each time he does it. 2nite he teased us with bits of Sign O the Times, Partyman (singing much of both those), Alphabet Street.. even the opening lines of Erotic City b4 stopping himself. During When Doves Cry, he got so in2 it he ducked down beneath the keyboard 4 a minute while still jamming. We even heard a verse or 2 from Pop Life and Raspberry Beret on keys. The backlighting during the piano set was xtremely cool — rays emanating from behind Prince and xtending out across the rest of the stage. During the sax and piano rendition of Wonderful World, Renato played possibly the sickest thing we’ve EVER heard during this song… he broke it down in2 a rhythmic, madfunky groove which drove the crowd crazy, then brought it right back 2 where it came from. Renato is a mad scientist when it comes 2 concocting grooves. One never knows what 4m they’ll take or what they’ll morph in2, but it’s always fantastic. Aftershow: We knew the aftershow was gonna b HOT when we saw Prince’s keyboard set up center stage. He walks out all in tangerine, complete with a hat that would make Sly Stone envious. (Later he even asked, “What u all think of my hat?”) It was all about funky keys 4 the first part of the night… Superstition, Higher Ground, A Love Bizarre. Dorothy Parker gets some play on the keys, then Sweet Thing with Marva on lead. They even broke in2 the Bill Withers classic, Use Me. Highlight reel of the night: Prince steps 2 the mic while the music 4 Satisfied plays. Instead he sings, “learn 2 work the toilet seat.” The crowd was roaring over this one and sang that line quite loudly every time he brought it up in The Rules. 2 funny. Highlight #2: the guitar war between Prince and Mya’s guitarist at the end of Thankufalletinmebemicelfagin… Prince would play a lick, then Mya’s guitarist would try 2 put his own spin on it. Eventually Prince played something 2 sick and won. August 28th Main show 21.08 - 22.48 Let's Go Crazy 1999 Take Me With U 7 Come Together The Beatles Cream U Got The Look Musicology incl I Feel Alright chant James Brown + Prince and the Band finish. After a little more playing, Prince kicked Lolita off on keys b4 venturing off 2 the rest of the stage 4 Black Sweat and Kiss with the band. He returned 2 the keys 4 an old school sample jam which as always was tight! We heard Sign O’ The Times, bits of Erotic City, Nasty Girl, DMSR.. we won’t name ‘em all, we need 2 leave some 4 a surprise. At one point he played a load of different song samples at once… it was like flipping through radio stations if every one of ‘em was NPG Radio. 5 minutes after the band left the stage after playing Purple Rain, the crowd, in unison, switched from cheering 2 singing the “wooo oooh ooh ooh” portion of Purple Rain 2 convince the band 2 come back 4 an encore. Seems it worked! September 6th Indigo2 12.35 - 2.15 (approx 1 hr 30 mins performance time) Honky Tonk Women The Rolling Stones Crazy/I Just Can't Get You Out of My Head Gnarls Barkely/Kylie Minogue Rock Steady Aretha Franklin Sugar Mama Beyonce (incl 17 intro) What You Need INXS Love Is A Losing Game Amy Winehouse Baby Love Mother's Finest Redhead Stepchild All the above - Shelby J. vocals Stratus Billy Cobham Planet Earth Guitar Somewhere Here On Earth "Alright it's karaoke time" - Prince The One U Wanna C When U Were Mine Anotherlover/Rock Lobster Short break 3121 (incl. Tom's Diner riff Suzanne Vega + extended vocoder chants/beatbox from Mike Phillips after the rest of the band leave the stage) Encore 3121 reprise (including extended Prince bass solo) Encore Chelsea Rodgers 3121.COM REVIEW 2nite’s aftershow was INTENSE and IMMENSE: probably the longest afterset yet, with Prince, the band and audience having mad fun thruout. The NPG broke out some numbers we haven’t heard in a while: All The Critics Love U in London, Eye Wanna Take U Higher, and Joy in Repetition like it’s never been done b4! The Joy jam went on 4 days with xtra sick guitar licks. Even the way it was sung was more like a spoken word piece, giving it an entirely new flava. Later in the set, Prince improvised a piece ON THE SPOT… he threw down some chicken grease on guitar and said, “Eye got a computer… it don’t work. When eye turn it on it don’t play nothing like this.” One line was “let’s ask the people what they want” 4 the next single: The One U Wanna C, or Chelsea Rodgers. It’s a tough call, folx wanted both! Then during the song he mentioned the ills of the music industry and how albums don’t sell like they used 2. His answer: “eye’ve never sold a record.. eye make ‘em.” In essence: it’s about making music, not making/selling a product. Tell it! September 12th 20.55 - 22.55 approx 110 minutes performance time tbc UK Rock n Roll Hall of Fame intro 1999 I Feel For You Controversy (including Housequake chant) Satisfied/The Rules Cream U Got The Look Musicology Prince And The Band Prince solo piano set Little Red Corvette I Would Die 4 U (played to the same music as LRC) How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore Something In The Water (Does Not Compute) Delirious Free Band returns If I Was Your Girlfriend Intro We Will Rock You Intro Let's Go Crazy (1999 Intro) Baby I'm A Star Proud Mary Creedence Clearwater Revival All Along The Watchtower/ The Best Of You Bob Dylan/The Foo Fighters Take Me With U Guitar Kiss Purple Rain Encore Chelsea Rodgers Sexy Dancer Vs. After singing the soulful Satisfied, Prince said he wanted 2 speak 2 the ladies, but it was the men who cheered the loudest as he laid down The Rules about toilet seats, sports and shopping. No doubt there’s a lot of nudging and laughing between couples on this one. The piano medley was DEEP 2nite, full of jams we’ve never heard b4 on solo keys. Eye Would Die 4 U morphed from the minor chord progression of Little Red Corvette b4 it. Something in the Water was even played on keys 2nite! Delirious proved Prince plays a mean boogie-woogie piano and could hold his own with the best of ‘em. WHEW! Any rhythmic pianists in the house should take notes; this guy has more chops than a judo class. Later in the nite the NPG rocked OUT with Let’s Go Crazy, Baby Eye’m A Star, Proud Mary, All Along the Watchtower (with some MEAN guitar work), Best of U, Take Me With U and Guitar. It kept pumpin’ after that 2. The NPG had so much fun, the encore songs were played without hesitation (as in, no waiting 4 the encore). Then later, after we all thought the show was over, houselights were up on FULL and Prince came back alone 2 funk up the keys some mo’. He played a mini-set from all r favorite funky samples: Sign O’ the Times, Pop Life, even a bit of Mountains! We can hardly wait 2 c what 2morrow nite brings. C u there! September 13th Indigo2 1.04-2.56 - no breaks. The Dance (piano, no lyrics) Around The World In A Day Beautiful Strange Whole Lotta Love Led Zeppelin Paisley Park instrumental Partyup Rock Steady Aretha Franklin (Shelby J. vocal) 7 Come Together Who Is (s)He And What Is He To You Bill Withers (Marva King vocal) Question Of U/The One/Fallin Misty Blue (Shelby J. vocal) written by Bobby Montgomery Baby I Love You Aretha Franklin (Prince, Shelby, Marva sharing vocal - no band) What You Need INXS Musicology/Prince + The Band Notes - the start of the aftershow was very psychedelic oriented with heavy guitar effects. Misty Blue - the performance suggests it was inspired by the Dorothy Moore (1976) version. 3121.COM REVIEW What on Earth (or in space?) did we just witness? Whew! Back2back, the NPG rolled out Around the World in a Day, Beautiful Strange, and Whole Lotta Love. Those 3 featured the SICKEST guitar playing and effects ever 2 b heard on that stage. Beautiful Strange took things thru outer space — by the end of the song, Prince was bending notes, fading tones in and out with the volume knob, and coming up with seriously tripped out sounds — and that’s not even counting what the effects pedals add. It sure was great hearing Around the World in a Day live, 2. Just moments earlier we’d heard someone say they’d wish he’d play that. U got it! Prince played Paisley Park instrumentally and solo on guitar, then led the band in2 Partyup. This song SMOKES live. By the end of the song, the entire crowd took part in the “we don’t wanna fight no more!” chant. Nice. Come2gether was about the longest, sweetest version we’ve heard of this song. Prince played Renato’s keys as Marva took the mic on the Bill Withers classic Who is She? They killed this jam. Whether u call it 2 hot or 2 cool, we know one thing: nobody can touch it. Prince seemed 2 b having THE most fun we’ve ever seen him have at an aftershow. He was constantly clowning, just being free all night. When Shelby sang Misty Blue, he ran onstage and screamed like a fan. Later on he couldn’t take it anymore and dove in2 some pillows on the drum riser. This song brought the house down, by the way… it’s so nice 2 c everyone appreciating the NPG and giving some love back. Prince even played some cowbell, complete with funky faces.. fun. Morris even had his own cheering section on his side of the stage.. perhaps they were trying 2 coax him in2 doing the robot. Thruout the night, Prince called on Morris 2 just play one note on the organ, which became a running joke later. “Morris got a attitude,” he’d say, and there’d be that sick, sticky organ note again, with spotlights on Morris. 2 funny. These shows r so much fun, and so different than the main concert. 3121 really is the perfect place 2 c the NPG.. check it out while u have the chance! September 16th Indigo2 1.05-2.50 Thank You For Talking To Me, Africa Sly and The Family Stone 3121 incl DMSR Girls & Boys jam incl Delirious + Song Of The Heart + "I used to be just like you" Satisfied/Cock Eyed Woman Lolita Black Sweat Be Happy Mary J Blige (Shelby J. vocal) 9 Million Bicycles Katie Melua Gotta Broken Heart Again Sing A Simple Song Sly and The Family Stone Everyday People Sly and The Family Stone Notes - "I used to be just like you" - Prince "joking" about not being able to go out in public without people wanting his photograph. Prince decided to end the aftershow playing from Kings Row balcony - he led Marva King and Shelby J. across the dancefloor to the VIP lift for access to the upstairs, jamming on the guitar the whole time. 3121.COM REVIEW Prince must really L O V E playing these aftershows becuz at each one it seems like he’s having more fun than the previous show, and he’s been havin’ a ball all summer. (At least that’s how it appears 2 us.) 2nite Prince the jokesta was in the house and kept the crowd laughing almost as hard as they were dancing. The show kicked off with the hot, slow funk of Thankufalletinme Be Mice Elf Agin. We knew it was going 2 b a fun nite when Prince was already standing out on the speaker plat4ms in front of the stage by this first song. Then came 3121, with verses from DMSR woven in. During Girls and Boys we heard a few lines from Song of the Heart and even Delirious. Then they kicked the fun up 2 eleven: Prince talked about how he used 2 b like all of us, able 2 walk down the street, go 2 the store 2 buy, ahem, “womanly” things 4 his mom, then try 2 act cool on the way home even with that stuff in the bag. We won’t tell it all 2 spoil anyone’s fun, but he has jokes, that’s 4 sho’! After Satisfied, still in playful mode, he broke in2 a blues song about his beggin’, cockeyed, 3-handed woman. The place was in stitches it was so funny… it sounded like he was adlibbing as he went and some of the stuff was straight gut busting. During a part about the girl being no good, the crowd said, “awww,” 2 which he replied something like, “that’s alright, don’t b sad 4 me… eye’m gonna talk about her!” This is a great crowd participation song — everyone laughed hard and responded in unison 2 each verse. Big fun. Check this out: during Everyday People, Prince seemed 2 notice one of the hairstylists falling asleep in the balcony seats, so he took the party up there 2 her 2 wake her up! He (on guitar) and Shelby and Marva with mics got jammed right in front of her and called her out by name: Tresha. Uh oh! Maybe she’s been 2 2 many aftershows, or is just so comfy at them she can sleep thru all that nrg. She’s missing out! And that was a wrap — thruout the show, a good time was had by all, onstage and off. September 21st I Feel 4 U Controversy Musicology Chelsea Rogers Le Freak/Sexy Dancer Somewhere Here on Earth Cream U Got The Look piano: I Would die 4 U I Wanna Be Your Lover Little Red Corvette The Beautiful Ones Under The Cherry Moon (instrumental) Sometimes It Snows In April Purple Rain Take Me With U Guitar Kiss Let's Go Crazy Nothing Compares 2 U 1999 When Doves Cry Sign O The Times Alphabet St Irresistible Bitch/The Most beautiful girl in the world Delirious Raspberry Beret When U Were Mine Girls & Boys 3121.COM REVIEW Leading in 2 the piano portion of the show, Prince said that imagining perfection or paradise is imagining the joy of these 21 nights, then said, “thank u, London, 4 what we will always remember.” He was definitely showing love and thanx 4 the crowd all nite 2nite. - The entire piano set was a great singalong. There was MAJOR crowd participation all nite — high voltage nrg transfer going back and 4th between fans and stage. It seemed like everyone had fun. - Closing out Sometimes it Snows in April, he sang, “as much as eye wanna stay, all good things, they say, never last.” - b4 singing Kiss, he said, “This is confusing. The quicker eye go thru these hits, the sooner eye’ll b gone… eye ain’t tryin’ 2 go nowhere. Eye love it in London.” - The crowd chanted: “eye love u Prince.. no eye really love u Prince” during Let’s Go Crazy. - During an encore, one of The Twinz took a can of red spray paint and painted a big “21″ on Prince’s back — on a nice white jacket, no less! We hope the photographer who was present got some shots of this. - During another encore (a sampler smackdown at the keys), he even sang part of Irresistible B. That groove is so funky it seemed like he couldn’t resist. - After the band left the stage, the crowd stayed put 4 quite some time. Prince came back out and said, “if y’all ain’t going home, eye ain’t going home” and played When U Were Mine and Girls and Boys. - The show closed with Nothing Compares 2 U, after which Prince said, “What a nite.. thank u so much. We’ll never 4get this.” Neither will any of us. Thank u, NPG, O2 staff (quite friendly, many of them) and all of y’all rockin’ multiple shows along with us. U know who u r! Thanx again, so much… ’til next time! "Still Crazy 4 Coco Rock" | |
